Chapter 156: Obsidian Wings II

As they soared, he took a sharp turn towards the route leading to the ocean. The path looked familiar from above but then the wind was too heavy for her to keep her eyes open so she closed them shut until they landed and her feet was touching the ground.

As she opened her eyes, she met the dark blue ocean glimmering beneath the starlit skies. They were like tiny diamonds scattered on a dark, cloudy blanket which reflected on the ocean. The ocean breeze blew past her making her gown flail and her hair scatter behind her in a serene manner. The smell of the ocean was relieving, in that moment she felt her problems wither away.

Realizing they were atop a cliff, she scrutinized the vicinity only to discover they were at the black dragon’s lair. She looked back at the entrance into the cave, it was pitch black with not a single thing perceptible to her sight, but she was well aware the black dragon was inside, lurking in the darkness.

Goosebumps manifested on her arms as nostalgic memories hit her. She stared at the expanse of the ocean with a wistful smile. It was a serene sight until she heard the ruffling of Draco’s feathery wings which snapped her attention to him.

Entranced, she reached out and stroked the obsidian wings sprouting out of his back, they were as hard as steel yet soft, like a symphony of grace and darkness.

"If I had wings, I’d fly around the world." Rama muttered dreamily.

"You do. I am your wings, I can take you around the world." Draco said, leaning into her ear. There was an undeniable allure to his voice, it both hypnotized and captivated her.

Immediately he spoke, a shadowy darkness engulfed his wings and then it dissipated into cloudy mists.

"Let’s leave then, have our own life and home somewhere far away where no one would ever find us." She whispered, eyes gleaming with unspoken dreams as she stared into his, a dream of normalcy.

Unnerving silence echoed back to them.

"We could, but it doesn’t matter how far we run or where we go, dark forces are always going to find us. They’re drawn to the darkness and I’m nothing but a living embodiment of it, they’ll always move with me, and they’ll always live with me." He said with furrowed brows, his face was etched with a dark look as his words dripped with uncanny caution.

The sense of foreboding hung in the air as if the dark forces where watching beneath the darkness.

"I’m well aware of that, I only yearned for a bit of normalcy, away from obligations or supernatural forces, a bit of normalcy won’t hurt. I’ve always been a princess living in a castle, I want to experience what it would feel like living in a cottage with my family, kids running in the garden and...." She trailed off and bit down on her lower lip slightly embarrassed at her disclosed fantasy, one she had harboured and imprisoned in her head, never spitting it out.

He stared at her for a moment, amused by her ordinary dream. A tender smile grazed his lips before it disappeared "We would live in a cottage as you wish, but there are things I need to take care of here, if I leave it would be chaos in the kingdom. The kingdom would be vulnerable to attacks." He explained with a grim look, a whiff of menacing caution in his tone.

Stepping down from his throne and vacating the vampire kingdom would leave it vulnerable to ground attacks, from supernatural enemies who would connive to tear them down as their immortal protector would no longer be present to defend them, it was a risk he wasn’t willing to take.

"It doesn’t really matter where we go, as long as we’re together I’ll be happy." She said with a shy smile, her eyes twinkling like the stars as she locked her gaze with him.

"You’ll have to scratch the having kids part out." A subtle hardness flashed across his dark eyes as he spoke, his decision fixed and unwavering.

He sat at the edge of the cliff and she immediately took a seat beside him, legs swinging midair. Disappointment etched on her face on hearing his unfiltered words. It was obvious he didn’t want kids, not even one, whereas she had been dreaming of having two.

"It’s unfair for you to make that decision on your own without hearing from me first, don’t you think it’s a little selfish of you?" She said, sadness lingering in her voice as her face fell with gloom.

"They’re not the source of our happiness, we are." He stated firmly.

"Since you’re being selfish it’s alright for me to be too. I’ll have a baby and you cannot stop it from happening." She stated with unwavering firmness between gritted teeth, chin raised daringly high.

"We’ll see about that." He merely muttered in a flat tone, unmoved by her opposition.

"What’s wrong? Why don’t you want a baby? It would have been cute, a little Draco running down the hall." She said with a laughter. Her laughter filled smile was like a sweet addiction coursing through his veins.

Her laughter made her face dazzle like the glowing moon.

He snorted out a laughter as the thought crossed his head, for a split moment he could envision a younger version of him running down the hall while Rama hugged him with motherly affection.

"You want a baby but there is a reason holding you back from wanting it, isn’t it? Why don’t you want one?" She said as her laughter abruptly stopped, her countenance replaced with a serious one as she observed him.

His silence lingered for a moment as he stared out into space before sating the air with his velvety timbre voice. "Because I’m exactly like Lucifer." He said, his voice low with an underlying menace beneath it.

She could feel the weight of the vigorous damage resulted from the lack of parental love they refrained from showing him and rather the inevitable darkness they drowned in him, not a single warmth of affection was conveyed from them as if he was nothing more than a tool they had created.

She could comprehend his fear of treating his kids the same way as he was never given love or warmth from his parents to reciprocate to them.

He loathed becoming a clone of his father’s numb heart, but only she knew the tenderness he held in his heart for her, the same love and tenderness he would undoubtedly convey to his children, but rather the dark origin of his birth cast doubts in his heart.

She turned to him, her eyes like stars in the twilight, and whispered gently,

"That’s not true, you’re nothing like your unloving father, your heart is so unfairly shadowed by pessimism."

"He was never my father." He breathed out with a cold, impassive voice.

As they gazed into the expanse of the vast sea, her fingers entwined with his as she continued "You fear becoming a reflection of the man who lacked love, but the darkness of your lineage will not define you. Only I know the tenderness that resides within you, a warmth that can kindle the brightest fire, I know in my heart that you will be an extraordinary father to our children." Rama said, her speech was strongly persuasive and her mellifluous voice served as a sweet toxin coursing through his veins.

"Oh Rama, you never give up, do you?" He said teasingly, his earlier cold eyes slowly burning with the warmth it usually retained when he looked at her.

"That’s a yes, isn’t it?" She exclaimed with wide eyes as she grinned from ear to ear, her eyes lighting up like the glittering stars.

"We haven’t even consummated the marriage yet, until then." He reasoned out, while she nodded as she cuddled against his body.

Perched upon a rugged cliff that caressed the roaring ocean below, they both found solace in each other’s company. The wind played with their hair, and the horizon was painted in hues of amber and indigo.

"There’s something I have to confess." She whispered gently in the breeze with head leaned against his shoulder.

The air grew silent as he waited for her to speak.

"I never heard the vow you read for me at the wedding, I should have listened but I wasn’t." She spewed out, her voice remorseful.

He merely chuckled at her confession, making her tilt her head up to catch a glance of his laughing face.

"Well, it was a handwritten vow, I felt bad that I never knew what you said, you don’t have to laugh at me." She pouted timidly.

"I can say it again love." He whispered in her ear and she nodded with a shy, demure smile as she sat up straight to listen.

Holding her hand in his, he began.

"My dearest love, in the shadow of our eternal bond, I promise to keep the flames of our passion burning, even if they scorch the very depths of hell itself. Through the abyss of time, I shall be your unwavering companion, my heart forever etched with the wicked beauty of our union. As the devil’s son, I pledge to protect your soul from the terrors that lurk in the night, and in your darkest moments, I shall be the whispered promise of salvation. With you, my beloved, I shall rule a kingdom of sin and desire, our love an infernal tapestry of twisted fate. For in your eyes, I find the abyss, and in your embrace, I discover a darkness that eclipses all." Every word he uttered had the power to mesmerize and bewitch souls into the fervent passion lingering within them.
