The Demon King's First General -
Chapter 74: Wren Stasis
Chapter 74: Wren Stasis
Roq’oyah felt surprised upon hearing the man’s statement. After all, he knew that demons were heartless and ruthless beings who loved to have anything for the sake of their pleasure.
Meanwhile, the demon in front of her made her escape the curse of being a revenant, and now he even gave her freedom to choose her next course of action.
"I won’t forget this gratitude for the rest of my life," she said, bowing in Zeno’s direction.
"If you may excuse me, I’ll be heading off," she added.
Without waiting for the demon’s response, she vanished as soon as she leaped towards the tree branches.
Kizeler, who was stunned upon seeing the little monster die right before his eyes, shook his head. Though he couldn’t care less about it, he felt troubled upon seeing the demon sucking the life force of an innocent creature. After all, it was not that pleasant from a human’s perspective.
His mind was filled with piled-up questions regarding the revenant, and he didn’t let the opportunity pass by; he stated them as soon as the woman disappeared from his sight.
"Would you mind telling me what you did earlier? He asked, but upon seeing Zeno keep his silence, he stated the rest of his questions.
"What exactly is a revenant, and how come she returned back to life when she was definitely not breathing when you kissed her? He added, bombarding the demon with his queries while staring at his back.
Zeno, whose thoughts were drifting into his memories, returned to reality as he heard Kizeler’s endless question. He glanced at the human behind him and answered.
"That’s what a soul devourer can do; we can extract souls and put them inside a vessel that has the ability to keep the souls from dissipating." He paused and started to walk away from the direction of the lake.
"Vessel? Do you mean that red dice?" Kizeler asked and followed suit.
Zeno nodded and answered without looking back.
"Yes, then I transfer it to another vessel, which is her dead body," he said.
Kizeler processed what he heard, and his eyes started to sparkle in amazement.
"Then you can revive a person?" He exclaimed, but his excitement vanished as soon as Zeno laughed and shook his head.
"Have you listened to me earlier at all?" The demon replied.
"I can’t extract the soul of an already dead person, so I can’t bring them back to life, and for those who died at my hands, why would I revive them when I killed them in the first place?" He added.
The human nodded as he got Zeno’s explanation. He was ready to give up the idea when the demon spoke once more.
"However, I can make someone cheat their deaths," he said, which intrigued the human behind him.
"How?" Kizeler asked.
"Imagine you’re dying right now," Zeno said.
’Why does it have to be me?’ The human complained, but he had no resolve to voice it out, so he let it stay inside his head.
"And you have a serious wound, but not a single healer is in the vicinity; I can kill you to extract your soul and return it after your body gets healed," Zeno added.
Kizeler imagined what the demon had said, and he got sudden chills upon remembering what Zeno had done earlier.
"Then you have to kiss me to transfer back my soul, haven’t you?" He asked while detesting the idea in his mind.
"Fool, just a flick of my finger is enough to do the work," Zeno replied as he continued his steps on the thick pile of snow.
Kizeler laughed and teased the demon with his next set of words.
"And yet you still kiss her," he said, smiling.
Afterward, he walked beside the demon and asked, "So how was it? Were her lips soft?"
Zeno shook his head and glanced at the man.
"Are you asking me to kill you right now?" He asked with a straight face.
Kizeler halted his steps upon seeing the demon’s glare.
"I’m just curious how it tastes," he retorted behind Zeno.
Then he remembered the scene from earlier and imagined that it was him and Priscilla. He stared up at the sky while smiling like a dumbass.
’What a pathetic fool,’ Zeno thought as he watched Kizeler’s expression through Eliana’s Legacy.
Upon seeing the demon gain several distances away, Kizeler stopped his delusions and ran to follow Zeno’s lead. It was past midnight, and with just the moon as their only source of light, the two people traversed a different path leading straight to the next town. No one from them spoke any words until Kizeler remembered the strange monster he saw along the way before.
"I know it was you who killed that three-headed creature," he said, hesitating if he should continue to convey his thoughts.
Then he was about to resume speaking when the demon replied without glancing at him.
"That’s merely a clone; someone is trying to replicate a monster that was long gone from the surface of this world," Zeno said.
However, instead of pacifying Kizeler’s mind, the things he heard made his thoughts more complicated.
"Replicating a monster? Gone from the surface?" He repeated, trying to comprehend Zeno’s statement, but it was never an easy task.
"Wait, is it still related to the prophecy?" He added, asking for confirmation.
However, the demon just shrugged his shoulders and didn’t speak any further, which left Kizeler’s curiosity hanging. He assessed the demon’s state of mind; since the moment they left the frozen lake, he was somewhat under a sullen expression, so he stayed quiet not to anger the demon.
Soon after, the two of them reached the town before dawn, but the people guarding the place blocked their entry upon seeing Zeno’s bloodied state.
"Hold on! Are you a mercenary? If you are, show me your pendant," One of the guards ordered.
He stared at the silver-haired man, inspecting him from head to toe. It was snowing, yet the person in front of him was just wearing a set of casual clothes without any protection from the cold.
Then Zeno was about to pull something from his pocket when Kizeler walked between him and the guards.
"H-he doesn’t have one," Kizeler chimed in while doing his best not to look back, afraid to see the demon’s expression.
"He’s traveling with me to register as a mercenary," he added, then showed his pendant to the group of guards.
However, the man knitted his brows. After hearing the news about what happened in Shieldscape City, they became much stricter in their duties to inspect everyone who wanted to enter their town.
"You can proceed, but this man here needs to come with us; we need to interrogate him, and if what you’re saying is true, we can even help him get registered," the guard replied.
"N-No.. Y-you can’t," Kizeler stuttered.
He was trying to find a way to tell the man not to interfere with the demon beside him, but he couldn’t think of the exact words to do so without revealing Zeno’s identity.
Then he glanced for a second at the demon, and upon seeing that his expression was still a little bit sour, he closed his eyes and stepped away. He prepared himself for bloodshed, and he somewhat blamed his lack of strength to confront the demon and for failing to save the pitiful humans in front of him.
The next second, he felt his companion step forward, but the scene that transpired inside his mind failed to happen, and as he opened his eyes, he saw Zeno showing a pendant to the guards while having a conversation like a normal human would.
"Wren Stasis, Amethyst-class." The guard read the name on the plate that Zeno handed him.
"I thought you weren’t registered," he added, and he looked at Kizeler.
"Don’t mind him; his head got smashed by a yeti awhile ago, affecting his thinking process." Zeno replied with a straight face and glanced at the human before a smirk appeared on his face.
’What the?’ Kizeler thought, then placed his fingers on the temple of his head before moving it in a circular motion.
’Damn you, demon!’ He expressed his insult in his thoughts, though he felt that it was better this way than to spill bloodshed early in the morning.
The guards let them pass and advised Zeno to change his clothes as soon as possible to not cause panic among the civilians.
"Good thing you have a pendant like that," Kizeler said as soon as the distance between them and the guards widened.
"I stole it from one of the few people who tried to approach me," Zeno answered.
Kizeler nodded and replied, "Now, I felt bad for that mercenary; requesting a new pendant is quite troublesome, after all."
"Indeed, but he doesn’t need it anyway," the demon stated, which made his companion drop his jaw.
’Because he’s dead,’ Kizeler thought while shaking his head as he realized what Zeno meant in his words.
Then after, the sun began to rise, giving off a warmth that Kizeler had longed for since the moment he entered the snowy region. Meanwhile, the demon beside him halted his steps and stared at the ball of light rising bit by bit into the sky.
Its bright redness drew a perfect silhouette of shadows among the buildings and trees around the area.
The next second, Zeno closed his eyes before inhaling a deep breath, and as soon as he let go of it, he glanced at his side and spoke.
"Hey Kizeler, while we are here, would you like to upgrade your mercenary class?" He asked.
His question brought confusion to the human, but he still replied with a delighted expression.
"Yes!" Kizeler exclaimed.
