The Demon King's First General -
Chapter 139: Traitor
Chapter 139: Traitor
"What kind of sorcery is this?" Endelle asked, dumbfounded.
The next second, with a single thought of him, another wave of lightning spears rained down on Zeno. Upon seeing this, the demon sighed.
"This is quite repetitive," he commented.
Then, his weapon turned into a scythe, and he swung it upward. It produced a wave of energy that destroyed the spears coming towards him.
"Time to wrap things up; if this is the limit of your strength, how disappointing," he added.
Afterward, he charged to where the angel was, swirling the scythe in the process. Endelle didn’t stand still and just waited for him to come. With another spear conjured in his hand, he lunged to approach the demon.
After seeing the angel’s movement, Zeno smiled and stopped all of a sudden, then entered a stance. He held the scythe with both of his hands on his right side, ready to swing at any second.
’What is it now?’ Endelle thought, curiousity was written on his face.
He tried to discern what the demon’s intention was, but he couldn’t think of any ideas.
’I’ll block it anyway,’ he said inside his mind.
As his wings continued to flap, his speed increased, and he burst forward.
The space beneath him tore apart, leaving deep fissures on his trail with sparks of lightning scattered on the cracks.
A split second before the two fighters’ collision, Endelle thrust his spear, and Zeno reacted by slashing his scythe.
Steel against hardened lightning energy clashed; the tip of the spear and the toe of the scythe met, creating something unexpected. An explosion burst forth in the angel’s direction, turning less than half of his body into ashes. If not for him, distancing at the very last second and sacrificing his wings to cover himself, there would be nothing left of him.
With his eyes widening, dumbfounded by the outcome, Endelle fell to his knees. He stared at the demon; his mouth partially opened, but no words were coming from it.
His thoughts were in a turmoil of emotions. Anger towards the man standing in front. Confusion in regards to the difference in their strengths. Helplessness to overcome the situation and a strange pain inside of him as the face of someone he cared for flashed in his mind.
He lifted his eyes, and she was right there, sitting at the highest seat, looking at him with disappointment.
Their gazes met; his stares were pleading for forgiveness, but the deity was unmoved.
Then, the sound of footsteps entered his ears and caught his attention, making his eyes move towards the front.
With a jet-black scythe on his right hand, a demon with tattered clothing and holes in his chest was walking closer to him. The grim reaper was coming to retrieve Endelle’s soul.
Upon seeing this, Endelle closed his eyes. With his wings all broken and half of his body shredded to ashes, he accepted his defeat.
"Any last words?" The demon asked as he placed the cold weapon’s blade next to the angel’s neck.
"My Legacy..." Endelle opened his eyes again and uttered after a brief silence.
"How did it not work?" He asked.
As far as he knew, his victory against the demon was certain after accepting the strange power, and with a perfect Legacy to counter all physical attacks, his enemy would be dead before him. However, his expectations betrayed him.
"A domain, a place that negates all Legacies," Zeno answered.
’Using it at the very last second before your Legacy gets activated is not an easy task either,’ he added in his thoughts.
There was no need to inform a dying man regarding such trivial things.
"I see..." He replied before his sight turned upside down.
His head fell, and it rolled on the ground with its eyes still open. The Guardian Knight of the Deity of Kindness was killed.
Zeno turned around, took a second to glance at Sherise, and walked afterwards. The jet-black scythe returned to its neutral form and rested on the palm of his hand. However, as he made a few steps forward, he noticed something amiss.
Endelle’s soul was still inside his dead body. The blue orb of light that was supposed to be collected by the Quintessence Cage was still attached to its shell.
"I thought you’re still down there, burning in the depths of hell," Zeno stated without looking back.
Then, as if replying to the demon’s statement, an eerie laughter reverberated in the premises, and Endelle’s headless corpse rose from the ground, levitating in mid-air.
The missing limbs were replaced by blood flowing from its neck; even the head was formed, but its shape didn’t resemble Endelle’s face.
Then, with a cold, shivering voice, the entity began to speak.
"Indeed, I still am, but just a little bit of time... The Gates of Hell will be opened, and the moment it comes is the day you’ll die," he said.
Afterward, the blood that took shape exploded, and each droplet rained down, melting everything they touched on the ground.
"Mark my word, traitor," the voice echoed once more before completely vanishing from the place.
Meanwhile, the demon remained unscathed, and behind him, Sherise appeared standing, generating a barrier enough to protect them from the rain of blood.
"There was no need for you to do that," Zeno said with a nonchalant expression.
"Just let me do this much," Sherise replied, shaking her head.
She wanted to speak about the things that happened earlier, Endelle’s strange power, and the words that the unknown entity left, but she chose to remain silent.
’Traitor’ a label for someone who betrayed a specific faction, a friend, a family, or even a principle.
’No, you’re not like that,’ she thought.
Then, with another wave of her hand, another barrier appeared, enclosing only Zeno. His injuries all over his body began to heal.
The next second, she caught a glimpse of the name written on one of the demon’s wrists.
’Ingrid,’ she read it with her thoughts.
The Legacy that caused a massive explosion, ending the long and arduous battle.
"There’s a lot of Legacies out there that provide great regenerating capabilities, yet you don’t get even a single one of them," Sherise stated as she watched Zeno’s wounds close bit by bit.
"Healing in the midst of a fight is just what a weakling would do," Zeno replied, making the deity sigh in disbelief.
. . . . .
An hour after the end of the Affair of Honor and Endelle’s fall, the angels were busy rebuilding the place where the battle took place. Meanwhile, Zeno and Kizeler were standing next to Sherise, bidding their farewell.
"Are you really leaving? Why not spend a few more seconds here?" the deity asked, pouting.
Her golden, bright eyes were flickering with radiance.
"We still have a child to find, right, Kizeler?" Zeno replied, shattering the excitement from Sherise’s gaze.
"Huh? Ye-yes!" Kizeler answered, stuttering, surprised by the sudden question.
Sherise let out a soft smile, enough for Kizeler to blush, then walked a little closer to him and held his right hand. She moved her index finger, drawing a cross symbol in the human’s palm before letting go of it.
"Y-Your Grace," Kizeler uttered, examining his hand.
Aside from the golden light that appeared when Sherise drew something and the tingling sensation he felt for a second, there was nothing more noteworthy. No visible symbol or even unknown energy could be sensed inside his hand.
"It’s a gift that will bloom when the time you need it the most comes, so don’t be bothered by it," Sherise said upon seeing the confused look in Kizeler’s face.
As he realized the greatness within the deity’s words, Kizeler couldn’t help but smile and bow his head.
"Thank you!" He exclaimed.
Then Sherise faced Zeno, and a sweet smile flashed on her lips, enough to melt every man’s heart.
"Hmnn, do you want a gift from me too?" She started to tease the demon.
The next second, she stood with the tip of her toe, enough for her lips to reach the demon’s cheek. However, what she received was a soft flick on the forehead.
"Hey! That hurts!" Sherise complained while rubbing the reddened area on her face.
"Enough with the foolish act," Zeno stated as he looked at the deity straight into the eyes.
Then he glanced at Kizeler.
"Let’s go," he added, and with a smirk, he reverted his gaze to Sherise.
"Open it up," he commanded.
"And if I don’t want to?" The woman replied with one of her brows raised.
"Then we’ll go take the stairs," Zeno replied, making the deity blink a few times in astonishment.
"Won’t you force me?" Sherise asked, but all the reply that she got was a smile.
"Fine, be careful about the things that I told you earlier," she surrendered.
With her hand waving in a vertical line, a giant golden door materialized in front of them. Veridiscent green on the other side could be seen as soon as it opened, showing some part of the forest.
Without further ado, Zeno and Kizeler walked towards the portal, leaving Sherise and the Court of Courtesy behind.
