The Demon King's First General -
Chapter 111: Do You Hear Me?
Chapter 111: Do You Hear Me?
’A demon among demons,’ Sentry thought while staring at the anomaly in front of him.
He failed to understand why Arguise ended up dead in less than a minute of their battle, and even if he wanted to think about it, that would be useless. Asking the demon involved was never an option as well; he was not inclined to disclose how he did it in the first place.
However, with that fight alone, he realized something that made him question his memories.
’If a sovereign is this strong, how did the deities win against them?’ He asked at the back of his mind.
Even though he couldn’t gauge the extent of the silver-haired demon’s capabilities, as the deities’ close aide, he knew very well their strength and the limits of their powers. Comparing this knowledge against the scene that transpired in front of his eyes right now caused him to doubt their victory against the ancient demons.
He was still in the endless puzzle of his thoughts when his concentration was disturbed by the humans’ actions. They began to walk in the silver-haired man’s direction.
Despite the things that they had witnessed and the fear that bloomed inside their hearts, they still approached the demon.
’Alles, wait for us!’ Royle nodded while walking; the smile on his face was wide enough to reach his ears.
"You’re really not as simple as I’ve thought," Jez commented while the Ruby-class mercenary looked back and forth towards his two companions, even though his legs shook enough to give him difficulty standing straight.
Then, the psychopomp followed behind the three people. Heaire’s eyes, which were filled with curiosity earlier, had a tinge of disdain for herself. She felt unworthy after remembering the words she had spoken to the demon the moment they met.
’He’s this powerful,’ she commented inside her thoughts and looked at the lifeless eyes staring at them.
"How in the world did you manage to pull that?" A hurried voice followed, directing a question towards Zeno.
The owner of it was none other than the giant black snake with two heads. He slithered, closing the gap between him and the group of people.
"Every person must have a secret of at least one or two," Zeno replied before putting both of his hands inside his pocket.
Afterward, he glanced at the dragon-centipede creature and spoke once more.
"Would you like to come with us and witness that thing called resurrection?" He asked with an evil grin.
"I may be impressed by your strength, but I’m still a Fallen Commander; resurrecting a being without the deities’ approval is a grievous sin. Though, like what I’ve stated earlier, I’ll turn a blind eye to this one," Sentry responded.
He was very careful in choosing his words so as not to offend the demon.
"Hmnn, then I’ll be content with this giant snake who started all of this in the first place," Zeno said.
The next second, he turned around and started to walk in the direction where they came from. The rest followed him while Tencent looked at Sentry. He remained still in his position for a moment before lowering both of his heads.
"You must go; this is the path you’ve chosen; there’s no going back," Sentry uttered out of nowhere.
Upon hearing the commander’s words, Tencent lifted his eyes and nodded one last time before turning around to follow the silver-haired demon.
Sentry was left there, staring at the group’s back, until they completely disappeared from his line of sight, and the place lost its brilliance after the santelmo vanished from the area. The commander dove straight into the sand, and the tranquility returned once more, but not in Sentry’s mind.
’I should find the First Commander... The truth about the war—I need to know what really happened back then,’ he thought.
. . . . .
In the area near the entrance of the cave, pieces of glowing crystals protruded from the ground, creating a vertical line. Each of them was carved into a cross-like shape, and the soil underneath them was dug up and scarified to be perfect for a tomb. Beside these graves was a man sitting idly, along with two women lying down in front of him.
He stared into the darkest alleyway and sighed.
"I’m done burying all those corpses, and they are not back yet!" He complained, and the next second he stood up.
"Damn it! I hope they already find what we’re looking for. Royle! Jez! Please be safe!" He exclaimed while closing his eyes and sticking both of his palms towards each other.
Afterward, he heard a little moaning, so he opened his eyes and looked at the priestess, whose palms were now covering her face.
"W-what happened?" Rye asked.
Her memories were clouded due to her sudden loss of consciousness earlier.
"Finally! You’re awake!" Goomer responded, and he sat again to check on the priestess.
"Are you hurt or something?" He asked, ignoring Rye’s initial question.
The woman placed her hand away from her face and looked at her friend sitting beside her.
"My head... It’s spinning, but I’ll be fine. Just give me a second to recover," she replied, exhaling a deep breath before speaking again.
"What happened? Where are the others?" She repeated her question.
Goomer shook his head and pointed at the tombs behind him.
"Jez and Royle are still out there; they are not back yet," he said.
Beads of tears formed in Rye’s eyes before dripping down on her face as soon as she realized who was inside those graves.
"I couldn’t save them; I’m sorry." Goomer lowered his head and apologized with all his heart.
"No, i-it’s not your fault. It’s my incapability of protecting all of you here," Rye stated, blaming herself.
The next second, she stood up and went closer to the grave. She kneeled in front and started praying with her eyes closed.
Goomer stared at the priestess; he did nothing and waited patiently for her to finish. Seconds later, the two of them heard several footsteps coming from deep inside the place.
He pulled out his daggers and entered his fighting stance, while Rye stood up and went behind him. However, the moment the priestess sensed a very familiar energy, she ran in the direction where it came from, and a smile blossomed on her lips upon seeing the duke walking in front of the group.
"Jez!" She yelled.
Then she threw her arms around the man’s body, ignoring the brightness coming from above him. She embraced him with all her strength. The tears she was preventing from falling since earlier silently dripped down her cheeks while her face was buried on the man’s chest.
"You guys are safe!" She uttered.
"Rye," Jez whisphered before returning the hug that the priestess gave him.
Meanwhile, Goomer put his weapons aside upon seeing their leader with Royle, and the Ruby-class mercenary who accompanied them came back safe and sound. The giant snake was still with them, along with a new face.
’Her arms...’ He thought.
Aside from her beauty, the grave wounds were the first ones that he noticed.
’What happened to her?’ He asked inside his head.
"Staring won’t fix them," Heaire blurted out while observing the man with the mask.
Her words sent a signal to Goomer, which brought him back to his senses. He let out a smile and looked at the bright ball of fire above Jez.
"Where’s that silver-haired demon? Did he die already?" He asked.
Upon hearing his comment, the mercenaries shook their heads to warn him, and they peeked behind their backs.
"Tone down your voice; he’s lying at the top of that monstrous snake," Royle answered.
Goomer gulped as he realized his foolishness, so he diverted the flow of conversation to their current task at hand.
"So what do we need to do afterward?" He asked again, this time looking at the giant snake.
Tencent spoke as soon as he felt the human’s gaze on him.
"Nothing; that woman will do the rest; all of you just need to watch. Am I right, Psychopomp?" He said.
"Shall we begin? Every second that passes lowers the chance of a successful resurrection," Heaire answered.
"Where is the corpse?" She added. Her voice contained urgency, which made the humans hurry.
Rye and Jez separated from one another while Royle and Goomer ran to fetch Allesanah’s body.
"What are these?" Royle muttered while knitting his brows after seeing the dug-up land with several crosses protruding from it.
"I’ll tell all of you about it later, Alles first," Goomer replied.
The next second, Royle nodded and picked up Alles’ body, and he felt troubled, realizing that she had lost her warmth.
’She’s freezing cold,’ he thought.
Afterward, they went back to the group, and Royle gently placed the body in front of the psychopomp.
Heaire stared at her and started to kneel.
"I think we should heal her hands first, shouldn’t we?" The ruby-class mercenary suggested.
"Silence!" Heaire exclaimed, and the man immediately lowered his head.
"Do not make any noise," she paused, and looked at Jez. "You! Hold the santelmo above her chest," she ordered.
Jez did what he was told without any questions asked. The light coming from the creature was enough to eliminate the darkness in the place.
"Perfect, keep it steady," Heaire said.
"Her soul was already gone. Chances to recall her soul are slim; what is her name?" She asked.
"Allesanah Von de Viance," Royle replied with a straight face.
The group’s hearts sank after hearing the psychopomp’s declaration, but still, they believed that Alles would be brought back to life.
Heaire nodded as she heard the name; afterward, she closed her eyes, and her body began to emit shadows, which soon crept towards Alles.
"Allesanah Von de Viance, do you hear me?" She asked.
