Chapter 226: Chapter 226: Hero Saves the Beauty
Wang Yongzhu immediately grasped the sickle beside her, not daring to rise, vigilantly scanning the surroundings.
Meanwhile, in her mind, she frantically called on the Xiao Tiantian System, "Xiao Tiantian, scan the area. What exactly happened?"
The Xiao Tiantian System played dead and didn’t respond.
Wang Yongzhu had a bad premonition.
This place was not safe to stay for long; she had to leave immediately.
Not caring about the madder root and the basket, Wang Yongzhu squatted down, cautiously retreating backward, just moving her feet slightly.
Then she heard a gust of fishy wind from behind, with a hot, bloody breath rushing towards her.
Wang Yongzhu rolled with the momentum, her sickle hand supporting her on the ground, while her left hand already gripped the dagger.
A black silhouette entered her eyes, a fierce beast’s head—it was a wolf!
Wang Yongzhu’s eyes narrowed, without time to think, as the wolf opened its blood-filled mouth, aiming for her neck with the hot, stinky breath closing in.
Her legs kicked out reflexively as the dagger in her hand swept down, and warm blood sprayed out, as the wolf that was kicked flew through the air, drawing an arc before thumping against a tree in front of her.
With just a whimper, the wolf collapsed.
But Wang Yongzhu didn’t have time to check if the wolf was dead, as she heard several howls echoing in the distance.
Damn it! It was a pack of wolves!
"Xiao Tiantian, you roll out here! What the hell are you navigating? Didn’t you say you could scan within a ten-mile radius? How come there’s a pack of wolves? Why didn’t you warn me? Playing dead?" Wang Yongzhu was also panicking.
Against a single wolf, she felt that her current strength and agility didn’t scare her.
But if it was a pack, even a Martial God would be intimidated, right?
Everyone knows that wolf packs hold grudges the most. If you encounter a wolf pack, either you play dead and wait for death, or you frighten the pack into submission, or they will pounce when you least expect it to seek revenge.
She was not afraid for herself, but what about her entire family back home and the many villagers of Qilidun? If the wolves descended from the mountains, people would surely die!
This thought left her with no room for retreat, okay?
Great! Xiao Tiantian, you’ll be remembered! I’ll settle this with you once I get back alive!
Wang Yongzhu gritted her teeth in anger.
Don’t panic!
Trying to keep calm, Wang Yongzhu looked around for a stout tree, thinking of climbing up first; at least wolves couldn’t climb trees, right? She decided to go up the tree to assess the situation.
After finally finding a tree, Wang Yongzhu tentatively tried to climb it, only to discover that she didn’t have the skill to climb trees at all.
Damn it! Wang Yongzhu cursed.
Unable to climb trees, she could only look for a high ground with a good position, allowing her to see how many wolves there were.
Eventually, she eyed a spot on the hillside where there was a rock sticking out. This rock was about one to two meters high on one side against the slope and several meters high on the other, dangling over the hillside, not easy to reach.
The rock seemed capable of accommodating two or three people on top, a perfect strategic location that was easy to defend but hard to attack.
As the scent of blood around Wang Yongzhu grew stronger, she feared it was from the wounded wolf’s blood, and the longer it lingered, the more likely the scent would attract other predators.
Without delay, Wang Yongzhu ran to the rock.
She didn’t know if it was good luck or what, but aside from the one wolf that ambushed her, no other wolves had approached during the delay.
However, the howls of the wolves became increasingly piercing and seemed to be getting closer as well.
By the time Wang Yongzhu had managed to climb to the side of the rock with great difficulty, she heard panting sounds as well as a strong scent of blood that nearly made her retch.
Something was wrong! As Wang Yongzhu climbed the slope and reached the top of the rock, she was shocked by the scene before her eyes.
On the other side of the rock, not far away, a pack of wolves was encircling a person. That person had his back to her, his clothing torn in several places, and half of his body soaked with blood.
At his feet lay several wolves.
That figure, wasn’t it somewhat familiar?
Just as Wang Yongzhu was trying to figure out who it was, she saw a wolf taking advantage of the man surrounded in the middle, who was flagging and tottering, suddenly leap from behind, aiming for the man’s back; in mid-air, one could see the wolf’s gleaming, cold teeth.
If that bite were to land, he would likely lose half his life.
"Watch out behind you!" Wang Yongzhu couldn’t help but shout in alarm.
The man heard the sound but didn’t turn his head. The knife in his hand spun in a flourish, and as if he had eyes at the back of his head, it plunged straight into the wolf’s forehead.
The flash of the blade was followed by a spurt of blood from the wolf’s forehead, and then it fell dead to the ground.
The pack of wolves stirred uneasily as if intimidated by the man’s ferocity, pausing for a moment.
"Over here, hurry up!" Wang Yongzhu saw that the man seemed to be at the end of his strength, barely holding on and knew she couldn’t just stand by and watch him die.
Moreover, in that split second, she saw his profile, which was unmistakenly Song Chongjin’s.
Without considering how he ended up surrounded by wolves, saving him was the priority.
Song Chongjin heard Wang Yongzhu’s shouts. He knew he must make it to the rock immediately; he had killed several wolves and was almost completely drained of energy, merely putting up a front for the wolves.
The moment he showed any weakness, the wolves would swarm him, tearing him to pieces.
Now, gathering the last bits of his strength, he retreated step by step. Although the wolves dared not approach, they kept pressing forward step by step.
After moving back to a somewhat safer distance, Song Chongjin dashed for the rock. Fortunately, it wasn’t too far and just as he was about to climb up after reaching its base, his foot slipped, and the breath he was holding scattered. He tumbled downwards.
Today must be my last! Song Chongjin closed his eyes.
But then he felt a tightness on his wrist, and his whole body lightened as he was lifted into the air.
By the time he came to his senses, he was lying spread-eagled on top of the rock.
Next to him was Wang Yongzhu.
It was only then that Song Chongjin’s tightly strung nerves began to relax.
Too exhausted to speak, he closed his eyes, breathing heavily.
His body had reached its limit, and at that moment, he could hardly lift even the tips of his fingers.
The wolves, having lost their prey, were not content. About a dozen wolves remained, their eyes glowing green as they slowly encircled the rock.
Wang Yongzhu clutched her dagger tightly, her heart pounding, but she couldn’t help but quip, "Does this count as a hero saving a beauty?"
The only response was the heavy breathing of Song Chongjin.
After sizing up the situation and seeing that Song Chongjin was already lying motionless and Wang Yongzhu didn’t seem like much of a threat, the alpha wolf of the pack howled a long cry. One of the wolves made a tentative leap toward the rock.
"Be careful—" Song Chongjin opened his eyes just in time to see this scene, and he could only manage to shout a warning.
