Chapter 414: Chapter 393: Just Take Off the Trousers
Oliver Thompson gasped for air, then turned his head, taking a deep look at the face beside him that looked as gray as death, with empty eyes. He frowned slightly, then quickly pulled up the quilt to cover her bare body.
His brows furrowed tightly, a strong sense of regret filling his heart. He had finally achieved something he had desired for a long time, but the pleasure he normally derived from women was gone, replaced by deep melancholy.
The man’s black shirt was still on, perfectly intact, even after everything that had occurred. Due to Julie Harrison’s lack of cooperation, removing the shirt made absolutely no difference.
Just take off the trousers!
He glanced irritably at his sweat-soaked shirt and tried to pull it off, but he found that the damp fabric clung tightly to his muscular frame and he could not remove it. Oliver rummaged around the bedside table in the guest room and finally found a cigar provided for guests in a drawer.
"Click!"
The sound of the lighter igniting broke the silence of the room. As the cigar was lit and a thin stream of smoke filled the room, Oliver took a deep puff and then slowly exhaled. With each exhalation, his previously furrowed brow slowly relaxed.
One puff, two puffs...
This repeated action filled the room with pungent cigar smoke. Julie, who had been silently bearing it, finally couldn’t take it anymore and started to cough violently.
Oliver hesitated for a moment, looking at the woman next to him, who was wrapped in the quilt and coughing continuously. His brows, which had just relaxed, tightened again. The next moment, he stubbed out the half-smoked cigar in the bedside ashtray and got up to go to the bathroom.
Soon, the sound of running water could be heard from the bathroom. The sound ran continuously, lasting until Julie, exhausted, closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
She was after all a woman, physically not as robust as a man. Moreover, Oliver, who had been practicing martial arts since childhood, was exceptionally fit. During their intimate moments, his physical superiority was apparent.
The woman had already fallen fast asleep, but the man was still feeling energetic!
After taking a shower, Oliver didn’t come out immediately. Instead, he leaned against the wall, puffing again on the cigar that he had forcibly abandoned earlier, allowing the smoke to envelop him completely.
He used to have a strong addiction to smoking. Despite knowing that it was harmful to his health, he never once considered quitting. He had started smoking when he was very young, right from the day he learned about his father’s death, and it had since become a habit.
He loved smoking because it allowed him to live in a world of self-deception, unwilling to wake up. Of all the things he had left in this world, this addictive sensation was his only refuge, and he couldn’t bear to give it up.
Even before Julie married him, she had been pestering him to quit. Despite her earnest efforts, he never really paid attention to her advice nor took her seriously. Eventually, she gave up on persuading him about the harmful effects of smoking.
Until one day, she told him she wanted a child. After she had pleaded many times, he agreed to give her a child. However, she looked at him with timid eyes, and his heart felt heavy with guilt.
The guilt of marrying her probably began at that moment. His heart softened, forgetting to reprimand her for intruding in his personal space. Instead, he frowned, raised his head, and asked her if there was anything else she needed.
He would always remember the look of surprise she had when she heard this. Her face lit up with a joyous smile, as if a pie had just fallen out of the sky and landed on her head. Her face glowed in glee.
It was like a ray of warm sunshine had pierced her heart on a freezing winter day. He fell for her, probably from that moment onwards!
At that time, he scolded her irritably, telling her to get to the point, and if there was nothing else, to leave!
She heard his impatient voice. Her joyous smile vanished instantly, her face returning once again to its timid expression. Then, looking at him with innocent eyes, she asked him, "Could you stop smoking temporarily? The doctor said that during pregnancy, the father shouldn’t smoke or drink. Otherwise, the baby might not be healthy, and there could be birth defects!"
After speaking, she quickly lowered her head, not daring to look at him. After a long time without receiving a response, she cautiously raised her head to steal a look at him. Seeing his stern and cold face, she didn’t dare to open her mouth again.
"If you don’t want to, I’ll try to find another way. There should be other methods!"
Saying this, she turned around to leave. Her drooping head full of disappointment, the lonely figure appeared as though he had mistreated her. This woman sure knew how to act!
Even though he knew it, his heart softened. Just when she was stepping out of his study room, he gave her a promise, "Whether our child is a healthy baby or not isn’t something you need to worry about!"
His hidden meaning was that she didn’t need to worry about whether their child would be born with a deformity, but this silly woman probably didn’t understand his implication even to this day!
At that time, when she heard this, she paused for a moment, but nothing else changed.
But since then, he quit smoking and drinking. Whenever he felt the urge to smoke, the image of her plaintive and nervous gaze would involuntarily appear in his mind, as if he were committing a crime just by taking a puff of his cigarette.
There was a type of woman in this world who, no matter how pitiful she appeared, could still break your heart with just a single look. Oliver thought, Julie Harrison was that kind of woman.
The daughter of the Harrison family, who grew up spoiled and doted upon, married him when she was older. Though love didn’t exist in their relationship at that time, besides his indifferent attitude, he had given her all the affections a husband should offer. Yet every time he saw her, he always saw her as a pitiful creature, the kind that you couldn’t help but feel sorry for.
When in reality, he was the pitiful one. The Harrison family owed him, and before he could settle the score, he had been forced into marriage by her. He had always been the one at a disadvantage, but somehow in the end, he was the one feeling pity and sympathy for her!
Oliver Thompson sneered as he snuffed out the nearly finished cigar with his fingers, then donned a bathrobe and stepped outside, his eyes lingering on the small face wrapped in the quilt, even her brows furrowed in her sleep.
He paused, pondering whether to leave or to return to her side. Turning around, he walked to the edge of the bed and gently dropped a kiss on her sleeping brow. Then, he turned to leave!
