Chapter 319: 299. Gu Shao’s Second Child in Progress
"Julie Harrison, what the hell do you want?!!"
A deafening roar broke through the door, penetrating Ivy Aretha’s ears as she stood at the doorstep in a daze, causing her to back away involuntarily. Her entire consciousness stiffened as their conversation challenging her nerves replayed in her mind.
Divorce? Living in loneliness until death?
What was the barrier between them as such frightening words were uttered by a seemingly gentle and modest woman?!
Overwhelmed with emotion, Ivy soon lost herself in her thoughts...
"Honey, let’s go back to our room." Before Ivy could make sense of what was happening, she was already enveloped in the warm embrace of the man. "Don’t worry, Oliver Thompson would never hurt her."
It seemed he indeed couldn’t bear to hurt her.
By the time Ivy came to, Michael Gordon had carried her into bed. As his fingers caressed her dazed eyes and his familiar scent lingered around her, she began questioning the reality of the moment: "Michael, are Oliver and Cathy like us?"
Ivy grabbed the front of his nightgown and blurted out the question.
"They’re not like us."
Michael chuckled softly, kissing her forehead and lashes, soothing her uneasiness. Seeing her emotions written all over her face, he could tell what was on her mind.
"How are they different?" Ivy guessed but couldn’t help asking, "What happened between them? Did Oliver ruin Cathy’s family?"
From what they had discussed earlier, Ivy wasn’t trying to pry into their secrets. However, they had spent more than a month in the same situation, continuously cold-shouldering each other, occasionally raising their voices like roaring lions.
After overhearing a few words, she speculated that a long-standing feud had grown between them. The ordeal reminded her of her own experience with Michael. Their relationship began with an accident and a misunderstanding, blossoming into love at the company. In just half a year, a one-night stand had turned the two into husband and wife, overcoming a significant challenge along the way.
Since they had been driven out of the Gordon family by Calvin Gordon, they had experienced life and death twice. So when Ivy heard the dialogue between Oliver and Julie, she couldn’t help but reflect deeply on her own experiences.
"Do you really want to know?"
Michael’s grip on Ivy’s shoulder deepened, the seemingly careless smile on his face tinged with a trace of sadness. Just as Ivy was about to say he didn’t have to tell her, he began, "When Oliver was ten, his parents died, and he became an orphan. He was then adopted by his father’s best friend, Julie’s father, and they were engaged since birth. However, when he arrived at their home, Oliver already had a girl he loved, whom he could never forget. Eventually, he married Julie, but five years later, the Harrison family was ruined overnight because of him. That’s when Julie fled and became your nanny, Cathy. That’s the basic story, and I’m not sure about the specifics. But now, there’s a chasm between them, and part of that is due to Julie’s own father!"
Michael paused, "The hatred between them can’t be resolved by the advice or mediation of outsiders. They can only resolve their issues themselves. If Julie can’t get past her resentment, no one’s words will help."
After hearing Michael’s words, Ivy was dumbfounded. This unbelievable and complicated narrative was actually happening right in front of her eyes, and it wasn’t just one incident. When she used to watch TV dramas involving family feuds, she couldn’t help but complain, thinking that these grudges were just overblown drama!
However, reality cruelly showed her that the seemingly few enmities in the world were precisely what they had encountered. Ivy and Julie both experienced these feuds, but Ivy was the one who owed another person, while Julie was the one owed. Yet instead of embracing forgiveness, Julie chose to escape aimlessly and become a stranger to those around her.
Ivy nodded along with Michael’s words, remaining silent for a long time before finally looking up and asking, "Michael, why do you love me so much?"
Ivy’s question was abrupt but arose from the conversation she had with Alya Larson at the cafe. Michael had forced himself on her out of anger, but his love was for her. She was shocked by the revelation, but she had to remain calm at the time.
As she looked back on their past and compared it with Oliver and Julie’s situation, she felt the need to resolve the lingering issues in her heart or keep them bottled up, adding to her internal darkness.
"Don’t you know why I love you so much?" Michael’s handsome eyebrows furrowed with confusion.
"Because I bore a child for you and suffered a lot?"
After pondering, that’s all Ivy could think of. Michael’s attitude towards her had changed ever since he learned that Bianca was his daughter. He moved in with them to bond with Bianca, and after seeing the caesarean section scar on Ivy’s abdomen, he decided to take care of them for the rest of their lives.
Then came dating, the forced marriage, the wedding, and their vows of love. As they repeated their love for each other, it eventually turned into genuine feelings. To Ivy’s surprise and gratitude, Michael was willing to let go of the family feud for the sake of their relationship. Their previously unstable marriage had finally settled, and their wandering souls had found a home.
"Had a child and suffered for me?" Michael chuckled softly near Ivy’s ear. "There are plenty of women who would bear children and suffer hardships for me. But you’re the only one I’ve ever given a chance to."
In other words, his love for her wasn’t just because of the child.
"So why do you love me so much?"
Ivy couldn’t figure it out. She had a quick temper, a difficult personality, and while she was undeniably beautiful, there were many other women in the world with the same qualities. As for handling family matters, the fact that she was an orphan made things even more complicated. However, Michael’s love for her was undeniably deep and genuine.
"Pfft!"
