Chapter 225: 206. How did the child hide?
"I won’t go to the hospital, and no need to bring a doctor home!"
When Lina Miller heard Mario Jensen mention both going to the hospital and summoning a doctor, her already pale face turned even paler. She hurriedly raised her previously drooping hands in a panic.
"Why are you so nervous for no reason?!"
Mario Jensen, who had already noticed that something was off about Lina, was even more puzzled as he saw her skittish behavior. He remembered her as someone with a good temper who was never afraid of him, but now it seemed like she was scared of him, as if she feared him discovering something.
Mario Jensen’s deep eyes were so close to her that she could feel his familiar, warm gaze without even lifting her head. She said, "I’m not nervous, I’m okay, just exhausted recently, and my sleep hasn’t been great. A good rest will sort me out!"
Mario Jensen didn’t speak, but just watched her silently. His already furrowed brow tightened, and with an inquisitive look in his eyes, he closed the passenger door for her and then got into the driver’s seat to start the car.
The car headed in the direction of Lina’s apartment. The two of them didn’t say a word for the entire journey. Mario Jensen noticed that her behavior hadn’t changed, even though he kept casting glances at her from the corner of his eye.
Lina leaned against the seat, her long hair covering half her face. Her eyes gently closed, sitting quietly as she always did. She was more withdrawn than usual, not engaging with him in their usual occasional conversation.
It seemed as though she didn’t want to speak with him at all that day. Mario Jensen wanted to ask her if the incident that occurred while he was drunk had deeply hurt her. Did she hate him?
What he really wanted to know was, if he wanted to take responsibility for what he had done to her, would she...
Yet these days, whenever he had his doubts, he found himself unable to voice them. He was unsure how to initiate the conversation. Even though he wanted to take responsibility, he still found his heart entangled with another woman. How could he propose to take responsibility for another?
She must have thought the same about him. That’s why she hadn’t revealed what happened that night and pretended everything was normal. The thought of it filled Mario Jensen with guilt.
They drove on for a while longer. Lina continued leaning against the seat, her posture slouching even more. Her long hair, usually neatly draped over her face, was now falling all over due to her relaxed posture. It seemed her usually dignified and meticulous self had forgotten to maintain her appearance.
She was leaning against the seat, looking very weak. Mario Jensen, seeing this, became increasingly worried. He couldn’t resist reaching a hand towards her forehead while driving. But just as his hand met her forehead, she suddenly opened her eyes and turned to look at him with a shocked expression.
Even though he was focused on driving, he could clearly feel her intense reaction. This instinctive reaction was out of fear. Was she afraid of him?
The idea was not palatable for Mario Jensen. He angrily applied the brakes, bringing the car to a halt in the middle of the road. His frustration had reached boiling point. He wanted to question her – why didn’t she blame him for what happened that night? Why did she not ask him to take responsibility? She had secretly pretended as if nothing had ever happened.
Although the car had come to a stop, Mario Jensen’s hands remained clenched around the steering wheel, his body emanating an aura of fierce repression. He was exerting so much strength that it seemed he could crush the steering wheel.
Neither Lina nor even he himself could understand his sudden outburst. Lina hadn’t done anything. He was the one who had taken advantage of her, and now was angry. Wasn’t her silence what he wanted?
But why was he the one angry when he was the one in the wrong, and not the wronged party?
"Fabian, what’s happened?"
Lina’s voice was as gentle as ever. Yet for the first time, Mario Jensen found it incredibly soothing. With her exquisite features full of warmth, he knew without turning to look at her how shocked she must be seeing him like this.
He could not scare her again. Being afraid of him was not what he wanted.
"The car had a minor issue just now. It’s okay now. You get some rest. I’ll wake you when we arrive," He avoided her gaze, afraid to see the reflection of his own chaos in her clear and innocent eyes.
He didn’t look at her, but instead inhaled deeply, calming his jumbled emotions. Then he started the car once more and drove straight to Lina’s apartment. Even though he told her to rest and that he would wake her when they arrived, she didn’t sleep. When he stopped the car, she opened her eyes as if prompted by some cue.
"We’re here!" After Lina said this, she quickly added, "I’m heading down then. It’s getting late, you should return home soon too. Drive carefully!"
She then quickly exited the car from the passenger side. In her haste, she even forgot her purse in the car, and went straight into the elevator. Mario Jensen’s scornful face disappeared behind the elevator doors.
Lina subconsciously let a sigh of relief. Only then did she realise the elevator wasn’t moving because in her anxious state, she had forgotten to press the button for her floor.
As she hastily pressed the button for the 18th floor, the elevator doors opened and closed. Just as they were about to close, a tall and handsome man entered. Lina didn’t notice and didn’t have the mood to pay attention to this man. Seeing him not pressing any button, Lina instinctively thought that he may have forgotten to, just like she did.
Not even noticing, she blurted out: "Sir, which floor..." Just as she was about to finish her sentence, the man who had his back turned to her turned facing her. He then casually pointed toward her purse in his hand.
"Fabian?!" Incredulously, Lina reached out to take her purse from him. She was about to tell him to go home quickly when the elevator stopped at her apartment floor.
