Chapter 343: Close Call

"The coast is clear. But I saw a ship. The same ship those nymphs owned, 400 meters away here."

After the halfing security scout said these sentences to their leader, the leader pondered for a bit before ordering, "Let’s set off. Just be careful, and look out for any traces of the Dean’s group."

"But what about those nymphs? They are going to kill us." The Halfling guards asked anxiously.

"As long as we don’t provoke them, we’re going to be fine."

"But..." The halflings still hesitated.

"At least one of their own saved us. And did you see them kill even one of us at the shore?" The leader sneered recalling all those who had fallen and Dranax’s decision to disregard lives.

The Halflings’ faces turned solemn which made the leader sighed. "Enough of this talk and just follow my command."

"Yes sir." The remaining 49 halfling guards complied and everyone slowly climbed out of the hole amidst the rubbles, just a hundred meters away from where Haoran set a temporary kitchen.

The team run for twenty minutes until the leader came across a bulwark fort and noticed the water mixed with tiny bit of red on the ground ahead. "Stop."

He said before slowly walking inside allowing him to observe the traces on the ground. He dipped his finger on the water and smelled it.

"Captain, I can see something." One of the guards saw the wisp of smoke coming out of the building.

"Watch my back and keep an eye out." He signaled the group to follow him.

The Halflings followed him, aiming the muzzles of their firearm on the blockade.

Because of the risk of getting caught, all capable men in the Dean’s group quickly banded together to hide the bodies of those Haoran’s killed, wiped out traces of blood and the strange white powder on the ground using the water in the pool, and collected the firearms before setting a blockade on the entrance using the shelves and stones they found inside the treasury before scouting the building for any traces of other monsters.

The women were assigned to clean the living areas, the seafood they picked along the way, removed the guts, and threw the unwanted parts inside a trash pit they dug.

They wanted to roast some fish but the Professor forbid them to on the account the smoke may reveal their location.

"Are you saying that we can only eat them raw?" One of the Mother Halfling complained. Seafood tasted bland when not cooked.

"The professor is right. Just clean them thoroughly. Our safety is more important than hunger." An auntie patted the mother’s shoulder.

The others obeyed albeit their faces display a little reluctant but their lives were at stake.

The professor tried the water from the pool an hour ago and was surprised that it doesn’t taste salty, saving him time to desalinate it.

Still, it needed to be purified so he made a filtration tool using the clam shell they have found by boring hole on the sides and filling them with rock, pebbles, and sands before boiling the final filtered water for drink.

Having been thirsty for a long time, the mothers tested the water and when they taste it does have any funny flavor, only then it was given to the young ones.

"Did you recognize the one who helped us?" The Professor dragged his pal to a secluded corner to talk about the identity of the man easily beat the giant lobster and wiped out the group of pursuers. If not for him, they would have been end up in a bad situation.

"I did. The fine clothes he’s wearing having deep shade of the ocean was alike the creature wore who Dranax fought before he died." They remembered Chunhua whom the heartless palace secretary had threatened.

"I remember it now." Realization dawned on the Professor’s face. "If that’s the case, we owe it again to the nymphs this time."

Their conversation was disrupted when the men returned from scouting the rooms of the treasury. "We found some interesting finds and found some sea plants and strange mushrooms. Could Professor tell us if they are edible or not?"

The men showed pearls, ferns, and sea sponges.

The Professor squatted down and examined the ferns when they heard a loud sound.

"Mommy, I’m hungry. I don’t want to eat raw fish. Can we at least roast it?" A child Halfling tugged her Mother’s sleeves. A Halfling dressed in a dirty thin dress looked down at her daughter. If Ron was here, he would have recognized the Mother Halfing as one from 405, and named Alina.

"I’m afraid not Sweetie. If the Dean says the bad guys are gone, only then will we be able to eat roast fish." Alina rubbed her daughter’s hair.

"But it taste awful, please mommy. Please mommy."

Alina couldn’t bear to see her daughter cried and finally said, "Wait here."

She stood up, stuffed the fish inside her vest and climbed onto the second floor quietly.

Soon after, the smell of roasted fish saturated the building.

"Can you smell it? I can smell someone is cooking." The Mother Halflings sniffed the air.

"Where’s your mom?" Alina had always stuck to her daughter, and with her gone, they find it very suspicious.

The daughter answered. "My mom said to wait here. She went to the second floor."

Everyone heard the loud sound coming from the entrance.

Alina was shocked by that noises and quickly picked up the fishes, extinguished the fire but she was caught by the others who just arrived and was dragged in the first floor.

The Dean, the professor and the ten Male Halflings picked up their weapons and went to the entrance and quickly pushed the shelves so the intruder can’t enter.

"How did they find us?" The dean anxiously said while peeping to a gap and his eyes caught numerous silhouettes shadows outside.

But no matter how they pushed, their strength couldn’t compete with the other side and the blockade was compromised. The shelves and other things tumbled down.

"Get ready!" The Dean had everyone stepped back and prepare for combat.

The Dean’s group was about to fire a round when they saw the faces of the supposed intruders.

"Thank goodness." The Dean and professor patted their chests before inviting their group inside.
