Chapter 427: 427: Xu Fang and the Cute Child (First Release)

July 22, appropriate for funerals.

The funeral home was crowded with mourners, and the parking spaces were all filled. Jiang Zhi had to park his car in the nearby mall’s parking lot. He stabilized the car, “Wait for me here.”

Zhou Xufang unbuckled her seatbelt, “I’ll go with you.”

Jiang Zhi pressed her hand, urging her to stay seated, “You’re pregnant, it’s not good for you to go into the spirit hall. I’ll just make a quick appearance and come back soon.”

It was a common custom in many places that pregnant women were not to attend funerals.

Zhou Xufang thought for a moment and agreed, “Okay.”

“Call me if you need anything.”

“Mhm.”

Jiang Zhi kissed her before he got out of the car and left.

Soon after he left, a gray seven-seater SUV parked next to Zhou Xufang. A young woman was driving, and a three- or four-year-old boy sat in the child seat behind her.

The child was eating a cupcake, his delicately chiseled little face smeared with lots of cream.

The woman parked the car and got out to lift the child, “Let’s not eat anymore. Mommy needs to go to the toilet. We can eat when I come back, okay?”

The child clung to his seatbelt, “No.” He whined, “Don’t want to go to the ladies’ room!”

The woman, helpless, coaxed, “Be good, okay?”

He refused, shaking his head, “No, don’t wanna go.”

The woman unbuckled the child seat’s belt, attempting to forcibly lift him out when he suddenly started crying. She had no choice, “How about you wait in the car for mommy, okay?”

Tears were still on his eyelashes as the child giggled, “OK~”

The woman looked around and noticed Zhou Xufang in the car next to hers; she nodded.

Zhou Xufang nodded back.

Reassured, the woman cracked the window slightly to ensure airflow and to make sure external hands couldn’t reach in, then locked the car door and instructed her child, “Mommy will be back soon. Be a good boy and wait for mommy, don’t cry, okay?”

The chubby child, his cheeks like plump steamed buns, smiled, “OK~”

The woman walked away, looking back three times with hurried steps.

Alone in the car, the child didn’t cry or fuss, scooping up his cake to eat, his eyes curiously darting around. Spotting Zhou Xufang, he grinned, smearing cream-covered hands on the car window, “Aunty, aunty~”

Zhou Xufang’s heart was completely charmed by the little boy.

The funeral home wasn’t far from the mall, and the guests to pay their respects to the Jiang Family were continuous. Jiang Wei’er had been standing without food from the morning for about six hours.

Her face looked sharp from thinness; Xue Bingxue, seeing this, felt distressed, “Wei’er, why don’t you go have something to eat?”

“I’m not hungry, you go rest, no need to keep me company.”

Her voice was hoarse, beyond the dark circles, her face was pallorly unrecognizable.

Xue Bingxue wasn’t faring much better. He had stayed with Jiang Wei’er unceasingly for several days, barely closing his eyes either: “If you won’t rest, neither will I.”

As Jiang Wei’er was about to urge him to rest, the Xue Family arrived—Old Master Xue with his two sons and Xue Baoyi too.

Old Master Xue first looked at his youngest son’s face, then at Jiang Wei’er’s; everyone seemed to be suffering.

“Wei’er.”

“Yes, Uncle Xue.”

The girl had always been thin, and now in just a few days, she looked like skin and bones. Old Master Xue, distressed and unsure about how to comfort her, advised, “You must take care of your health.”

Jiang Wei’er replied, “Mhm, I know.”

Old Master Xue sighed and led his sons and grandson to offer incense. With age, he struggled to bend his knees, so he stood in front of the memorial for a while, “Old madam, you can rest easy. Wei’er has us, The Xue Family.”

Jiang Wei’er was determined not to cry, but at Old Master Xue’s words, her eyes welled up. She remembered what her mother had said when she was alive: ‘Wei’er, if you marry into the Xue Family, mom would be relieved. When I was young, I once called Old Master Xue as Second Brother Xue. Remembering that, he will also love you more.’

No wonder her mother always hoped she would enter The Xue Family.

Following The Xue Family, one of the Four Great Families, the Qiao Family, came too.

After Jiang Weikai had received the condolence guests, he asked about his son, “Where is Jiang Chuan?”

“I haven’t seen him,” Jiang Xiaolin said, “since the day before yesterday.”

Jiang Weikai made a call, “His phone is unreachable too. I don’t know where he’s gone.” Jiang Chuan had been fiercely loyal to the old madam; missing the funeral was really inappropriate.

Jiang Fuli, who looked annoyed at everyone, spoke cynically, “He must have run off. With grandma gone, what’s left for him in the Jiang Family?”

The shopping mall’s parking garage was on the first sublevel, the closest ladies’ restroom was on the second floor.

Zhou Xufang glanced at the time, the mother had been gone for six minutes.

The little boy played contentedly on his own, throwing the cake onto the seat next to him, thumped the glass, and sang a nursery rhyme taught in kindergarten.

“My dear mom, coming home from work, having labored the whole long day, mom, mom, have a seat, mom, mom, have a seat, please drink a cup of tea, la la la la la…”

He couldn’t remember the rest of the lyrics, so just continued with “la la la la la.”

Zhou Xufang was listening intently when suddenly an elderly woman collapsed right in front of her car.

She paused, wondering if this was a scam?

After hesitating for several seconds, she still got out of the car.

“Old lady.”

“Old lady.”

Zhou Xufang called out twice; the elderly woman stirred and lifted herself up using the car’s hood, retrieving a bottle of water and a pill from her bag, took a moment to catch her breath, then looking at Zhou Xufang, “Young lady, could you give me a hand?”

The old woman’s hair was completely white, probably in her late seventies or eighties.

“Oh.”

Zhou Xufang assisted her, thinking the dashcam was on, unconcerned about being scammed.

The old woman, holding onto her hand, stood up, “Thank you.” She was a bit breathless, explaining, “Don’t be scared. I’m not trying to scam you; just my heart is not very good. After taking the medication, I’ll be alright.”

Zhou Xufang: “Oh.”

The old woman thanked her several more times, claiming she was okay to walk now, but after just two steps, she stumbled slightly. She embarrassedly chuckled, “My son is just upstairs at Bai Xianju. Could you trouble you to help me get there?”

Zhou Xufang had been to this shopping mall, and indeed there was a restaurant named Bai Xianju on the third floor.

She was still hesitant, whether to help or to stay cautious. After thinking it over, “I’ll help you to the elevator entrance.” She decided not to assist her to the third floor.

“Thank you so much.

“No need to thank me.”
