Chapter 62: Ch 62: Please, stay the night - Part 2
’How did these people get me to agree to stay here? I should have insisted herder on being allowed to leave.’
Anabella sighed as she looked at the group in front of her. They were all playing games, but no one had noticed her.
The small hoard in front of her was focused on the alpha pair—surprising enough, James. They all wanted to get closer to these three, and Anabella needed to get out.
Seeing her crush getting flirted with her was never a good feeling, but using her stepson in the process was even worse.
Anabella headed to the balcony to clear her head, realizing she was not the only one.
The one smirking on the balcony was a beta Anabella seldom saw in her class.
"You are...Rita, right? We used to take some classes together last semester. Did Noah invite you to this party? I was not aware you both shared classes or knew each other."
Anabella knew a lot about the alpha pair she liked but was not arrogant enough to believe she knew everything about them.
She wanted to know why and how these people had been invited. And she wanted to start with Rita.
"Hmm, are you asking me? Well, it is a disappointing story. Noah asked if I would be interested in a sleepover at his house. I agreed when he asked me, but I expected this to be a ’different’ kind of party."
The beta spoke as she took another drag of her cigarette.
Anabella could read the longing and betrayal in the beta’s eyes, but also resignation at the fact that what she thought would happen did not happen.
"I see...are you disappointed? Do you not want to try your luck by flirting with Noah? He might be interested in you since he asked you to come. Who knows what would happen if you tried."
Anabella spoke confidently but said these words more for her benefit than the beta before her.
She wanted to believe that she could still be with Noah or Clair.
’Tsk, how can I be so treacherous as to think these thoughts? They are my precious friends, and I should be happy they got together. I should not be feeling jealous of them...’
Anabella’s feelings and thoughts had never aligned well, making her hope for something that could not happen.
The beta likely sensed something odd in Anabella’s words about not giving up, but the beta did not question Anabella about what she was thinking.
Instead, the beta let out a resigned sigh as she took another drag of her stick.
"Life is not that easy. Those other kids and I came here with expectations in our eyes. But it’s all pretty much useless. Those two alphas do not have eyes for anyone who is not each other. I can only hope that this night ends soon."
Rita’s words stabbed Anabella in the chest. She was about to reply with something cheerful when the balcony door opened, and Clair walked outside.
She immediately headed toward Anabella and placed a jacket around the omega’s shoulder.
"You should not be outside in this cold weather, or you might catch a cold. I do not want you to get sick for no reason. Now, come inside. We should all bed head...were you conversing with someone?"
Clair finally noticed Rita, who also stood on the balcony, but the alpha quickly lost interest before she turned back to Anabella.
Being the center of Clair’s attention after the conversation, Anabella felt weird. She clutched the jacket on her shoulder before she passed a stiff smile to the female alpha standing behind her.
"It’s fine! I don’t feel so cold, but thank you for the jacket anyway. You should head inside now, and I will join you in a minute. Can you tuck James in my room? I will spend the night with him since it will make him feel safer."
Anabella was practically a stranger to James, but she was also the closest family figure he had, except for his father and grandparents.
He only had Anabella to rely on in this place, so she was sure the young alpha would prefer to have her close by when he went to sleep.
Clair had an understanding look on her face before she quickly went inside.
"Don’t take too long, or I must send Noah to get you back inside. You always had a fragile body, and I don’t want you to get sick and end up being hospitalized once more. The last scare was enough for a lifetime."
With those words said, Clair went back inside. But not before she gave the beta a look that asked her to stay in her lane.
Once Clair was gone, Anabella turned to look at Rita with an almost apologetic look.
"I am so sorry for Clair’s attitude. She’s nice, but sometimes, she gets in the mood, and this happens. Please, don’t take her glare to heart. She did not mean any of it."
Anabella apologized quickly, and it made the female in front of her sigh, annoyed and relieved.
"I see! So, this is why I had a feeling that something was wrong. It looks like not all of us are as helpless as I expected us to be. One of us has a chance to get what they want here."
Rita spoke mysteriously, making Anabella feel as if she was talking to a rock. Her nerves felt like they were on fire, and she quickly stepped back from Rita.
She did not even notice when the beta stepped forward and touched her shoulder to wish her luck.
"Good luck, Anabella. I am sure you will need it for all the bullshit you are about to face soon."
Those words felt like a warning that Anabella needed to heed, and she felt goosebumps rising even after she went inside and tried to relax in her bed.
The night was still young, but it felt as if a century had passed.
