Chapter 49: Ch 49: Not as innocent as you look - Part 1
Having Daniel so close to her was not a good idea. Her skin felt sweaty in the same room, smelling familiar pheromones that tried to make her submit.
Daniel did not even seem aware of what he was doing as he sighed.
"We should head back to the party. I feel like there will be many people looking for us."
Anabella tried to hide how nervous she felt at the moment. Her nails scratched her neck awkwardly, and she tried to stop, but it didn’t help.
She had sharp and well-kept nails, but they also felt sharp enough to break her skin if she continued to rub and scratch her neck with them.
But she felt too nervous to stop. She needed a distraction at the moment, and she doubted she was going to get a better one at the moment.
"Hey, you-! Stop it, or you will hurt yourself-!"
Daniel reached out to touch Anabella’s wrist to make her stop. But the reaction he got from her was different from what he expected.
Anabella cringed as she pulled her hand and body away from Daniel. The pair looked at each other with an awkward expression once that happened.
"I.... I am fine. I will stop stretching my neck now. You do not need to feel sorry or worried for me. I am truly fine."
Anabella confirmed a few times before she felt that her message got across.
Daniel still looked unhappy with her, but he did not argue with Anabella over this topic and let her have her peace.
The awkward air was finally broken when the door to their private room was knocked, and someone banged on it, asking them to open it.
It was an unknown voice, and Anabella felt nervous opening the door for a stranger. But that was not the case for Daniel.
He was an alpha, so he had no fear, even as he slammed the door open to see who had disturbed him.
The man on the other side of the door was a beta. He looked startled as the door opened, and an intimidating-looking alpha glared down at him.
Anabella felt sorry for the beta and interfered before Daniel would tear this kid apart.
"Do you need something? I am here to help you out with anything you might need. If you have some business in this room, tell us. We will leave for now."
Anabella was not social but had enough social skills to get by. She could talk to strangers without coming across as rude or overly friendly.
Her calm nature made the person who knocked on the door much less nervous, but the tense air remained.
And Anabella felt it wouldn’t be gone until her husband decided to head out and go somewhere else.
"I...I left my keys in this room. I needed to check for them. So, if you don’t mind..."
The man spoke with hesitation, shaking as well. There seemed to be a story there that Anabella felt curious about.
But she was not in a position to find out more about it. Instead, she subtly gestured for Daniel to leave the room with her.
The alpha took a while to understand her gesture, but once he did, he made a face of understanding before he left after Anabella.
Daniel’s shoulder bumped into the other beta, and the alpha glared him down before he left. His presence made the beta shake in his boots, but neither side looked ready to discuss it.
Anabella felt like she should speak up, but she did not have enough presence of mind to pay it any attention.
Ultimately, she decided it was not worth talking to her husband about something insignificant like this.
"We should head home now. What I came here to do has already been achieved. This charity event has no more meaning for me."
Daniel looked tired, and his eyes were beginning to drop. This man had not gotten much sleep in the last few days.
’Being close to Sharon must have kept Daniel busy enough not to be able to stay awake for longer. I do not even need to imagine how they spend their nights.’
It was a wonder Sharon had not gotten pregnant yet, but it was only a matter of time. Anabella needed to prepare her escape plans and money to leave on time.
She was about to make it out when she ran into the last people she wanted to.
"Bella, wait a minute! Are you leaving? So soon? And who is this person? Is he your husband? You should introduce us to him."
Noah caught her and Daniel leaving and dragged Clair toward them.
Daniel recognized Clair as the doctor who had treated Anabella when she was sick, but he had not expected to see her again so soon.
His eyes narrowed in disbelief, but the pair before him acted as if this was normal.
"Bella?"
Daniel asked in a low voice, questioning how Anabella knew these people. There was no longer a way out of this confrontation, so she braced herself and decided to face the music.
"Noah, Clair, you are still here? I thought you went home? Daniel, these two are my childhood friends. We grew up together and were close for most of our lives. And this is Daniel, my husband, who I told you about.
Ah, would you look at the time? I should head out now. It is so late. Daniel, let’s go."
Anabella reached out to grab Daniel’s hand and pulled him after her. She did not want a fight to break out, but things were headed in that direction.
Before anyone would throw a punch for certain, Anabella removed her husband by pulling him away.
Daniel looked annoyed and felt like he was running away from a fight. But in his mind, he knew that this was the right thing to do.
He could not risk his image just because he felt irritated looking at a face.
