Chapter 45: Ch 45: The Circumstances are to blame - Part 2
James was mature for his age and soft-spoken. His mature air made him feel different from other kids. Maybe that was why this kid did not feel much like a kid to her.
Anabella felt like the kid would understand what she was saying, and then she remembered that the person she was looking toward was a kid no older than six.
It made her feel agitated and ashamed for taking advantage of the kid and his innocence.
*Cough*
"Well, I am fine and don’t resent your father. If that was all you wanted to ask, you got your answer already."
Anabella did not have a better way to tell the kid that she did not hate his father, but she did not want to think about it.
She felt she might change her mind if she pressured herself more.
"O-Oh! I see. In that case, I should take my leave now. It looks like you need your rest."
James looked guilty as he quickly stood up to walk out. Anabella felt nagging that she should speak to the kid and not let him leave like this.
She almost hesitated to call out, but her feelings won.
"None of this is your fault, so you don’t have to feel burdened. You are still a kid, so go and enjoy your life."
Anabella doubted what she said registered in James’s mind. He quickly left the scene like a wilted flower, and the omega could only sigh.
She was not good at comforting others and felt this was Sharon’s job as this household’s designated ’mother.’ So, Anabella left it all up to her and decided to go to sleep.
The charity event would start soon, and she needed to look fresh and sparkly.
Three hours later, her sleep broke; it was time to start masking up her marks. Achieving this would require time and effort, but Anabella was ready for the result.
After almost four hours of trial and error, Anabella achieved the look she could. No one could tell how discolored her skin was just looking at her.
"I know I did this, but I cannot believe I could achieve this with the limited amount of material I had. I guess I do have talent in this field."
Looking back at the mirror, it was impossible to tell where Anabella had been harmed. Her skin looked the same shade as it always had.
She made her way down quickly, only to see that Daniel was the only one sitting in the room.
This felt somehow scripted, but Anabella did not want to waste her time and effort asking Daniel any question.
"Let’s go. I am ready."
Anabella kept her replies as quiet and small as she could.
Relief spread across Daniel’s face as soon as he notices the lack of marks on Anabella’s face. Her skin looked perfect, and he almost reached out to touch it and see if it had healed.
Fortunately, the alpha stopped before his hand touched Anabella’s face, and he coughed to hide his nervousness.
"We should leave for the venue now. The charity event will not wait for anyone. We must be there on time, or the media would eat us alive."
Being a famous person everyone wanted to keep an eye on was not as glorified as people made it out to be.
Daniel’s every moment was monitored, mostly under the journalist’s eyes.
As such, he needed to be extremely careful when attending public events and conducting himself in them.
He could still pass off as someone else during his private time, but not at an event.
So, he had to compromise and take Anabella to these places where, ideally, he should have brought his partner, Sharon.
"Do not touch my face, and make sure not many people come my way. Also, if my makeup starts to get bad, call me immediately. I will go and fix it in the bathroom."
Anabella had used almost a whole bottle of setting spray (it was an exaggeration), but there was no guarantee that an incident wouldn’t happen that would make her make-up run bad.
So, she would need someone to keep an eye out, especially given how large an area she had masked with the makeup.
...
’I should have expected this to happen. I don’t know why I even bothered to ask Daniel to keep a lookout for me. That man does not even pay attention to me when he needs to. Shit, what do I do now? I do not have enough foundation to redo my makeup.’
Anabella sighed as she looked at her exposed face. The ruined makeup on her face made it all shades of color.
How did this happen? Even Anabella was unsure, but she remembered that it was Daniel’s fault to a degree.
Someone had handed Daniel some drink as soon as they arrived at the event, and he had spilled it on Anabella because he had not been paying attention to her.
The only lucky thing was that he had hit Anabella’s lower face hard with his elbow, so she now had a reason for these bruises.
But the ones on her beck would be much harder to explain. They did not even look like sexual marks, so Anabella could not say that it was because of a ’passionate’ night she had with her husband.
’Who would believe me when they all know about Daniel’s open affair? Shit! What am I going to do now.’
Anabella was a little too busy looking at her reflection in the mirror to notice the bathroom door opening and closing behind someone else.
That familiar scent of pheromones reached Anabella’s nose before the presence registered in her mind. As a result, Anabella’s body froze, and she did not want to turn around to face the owner of these pheromones. She felt too ashamed to see people with all these marks on her body.
But her crush did not get the memo, so an arm landed across her shoulder, pulling her close.
