Chapter 40: Ch 40: Air the place out - Part 3
Daniel’s raised voice took everyone by surprise. The person who looked startled the most was his mother.
"What did I say wrong? Do you mean to tell me that Anabella is not at fault for letting the house and dinner get to this position? If not her, whose fault is that things ended up this way? Should I blame-"
"Mother, I was the one who asked the current caretaker to leave my things as they are. If you have anyone to blame, then blame me for it."
Daniel’s words felt like the nail in the coffin. His mother froze, and she turned toward her son with wide eyes.
Understanding flashed across her eyes before horror filled them.
"Daniel, you promised me you would not...I will talk to you about it later. For now, we should enjoy our dinner."
Now that her mother-in-law knew that this was not Anabella’s fault, she was quick to retreat and not say much. The conversation fell flat, and her mother looked at Anabella to carry it on.
But Anabella knew she could ignore her mother this time, so she did. She never turned her head to look at her, which made her mother clench her fist in anger.
Knowing her mother, there was a solid chance she would try to cause trouble for Anabella. The older omega could not stand the silence and the spotlight not being on her.
"Why is the air so awkward all of a sudden? We should all celebrate the fact that we have a healthy couple. Speaking of couples, did any of you know that my dear Jackson is courting someone? If we are lucky, we might get another wedding in the family soon."
Anabella poked at her food and did not notice her mother’s words.
Saying that Jackson was courting an omega was like saying water was wet.
Jackson had been ’courting an omega’ since he presented as an alpha. But that did not mean he had a girlfriend or anyone he could call his lover.
The main reason behind this was Jackson’s entitled behavior, which caused most of the omegas he was interested in to turn their heads away. The other reason was his incredibly high standards; he could not see a likable omega in his range.
He had to go for omegas, which were not only out of his range but also were paired with other (better) alphas most of the time.
Lastly, Jackson had rumors surrounding him that made any decent omega run away from him. He was not husband material for most people.
"Mother, stop saying that. I said that I was interested in an omega, not courting them. Why do I need to court anyone?"
Jackson asked in a calm voice, but because it was quiet (and because Jackson spoke loudly enough), his voice echoed across the dining hall.
The alpha became red-faced, and he stuttered to try to control himself. However, Jackson could not control his temperament because everyone was looking at him.
"Aww, my son is perfect. If this pairing is something you want, then I am sure that the omega would not say no to you. And if she does, I am sure your brother-in-law would help you. He can arrange a good place for your first date.
You will help Jackson out, won’t you, Daniel?"
Now, Anabella understood the real purpose of this visit from her mother.
It was not to check up on Anabella and Sharon but to ask for help for Jackson and his crush.
Her mother was self-absorbed, and her actions made others uncomfortable. Anabella was most often a victim of this, so seeing her mother made others uncomfortable. was refreshing
"Mother, stop it! Let’s just finish dinner and head back home."
Jackson proposed as he ate his food. After that, no one talked, and the dinner finally ended. Anabella kept her head down and pretended she could not see the obvious tension in the air.
Once the dinner was over and most people had left, her mother pulled her aside to talk to her.
Anabella waited for her mother to start speaking so she wouldn’t have to talk first and guess her mother’s mood.
"Your husband brought another omega into your home and relationship. Are you going to take this insult lying down? You need to do something to protect your position in this household."
That was the first thing her mother said to Anabella once they were alone, but this was not what her mother ideally wanted to tell her.
"Mother, you do not have to tell me that. Even if you complain, I cannot change Daniel’s mind once he has decided. Besides, I thought you came here to ask for help for Jackson?"
Anabella asked, and her mother’s face reddened for a whole minute. The older omega looked shocked and speechless before anger filled her eyes.
"That is not what I said, and you know it. Why do you have to try and prove me wrong at every chance you get? Just what have I done to you to get this result?"
The older omega would have caused a scene if she could. But because she was in someone else’s house and no one was looking, she controlled herself only to make Anabella feel guilty.
’I don’t feel anything when I look at that face. But for the sake of my sanity, I should pretend that I am sorry for what I did.’
It was a hassle, but Anabella changed her face to look troubled by her mother’s words.
"Ah, that was not what I meant. I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page as each other. I will ask Daniel to help Jackson with whatever he wants. As for Sharon, I will also try to resolve that matter."
Both omegas knew that it was an empty promise. Nothing Anabella could do (or wanted to do) to change the situation. But her mother still considered her empty words and pulled her act back.
"Then, I will count on you. I hope you do a good job of it."
