Chapter 57: Best Buddies
Chapter 57: Best Buddies
Landon walked out of the bar. Perhaps, he had drank a few more than he intended that his focus was swimming around. Nevertheless, it didn’t mess him up, and he quickly arrived at his car.
As he hopped into it and started the gear, he looked around to check his area before slowly driving his car forward.
Just then, as he passed by the hotel entrance, a figure emerged from a car that had just arrived.
If Landon had waited or stayed there for even a few seconds, he would’ve recognized who it was.
At this point, Lucy also had no idea that Landon had just passed by. If she did, it would have made her regret coming, as she wouldn’t have no way out of it.
Walking into the lobby, the lavish style of the interior didn’t beat the overwhelmingly beautiful exterior of the building. As it was a famous place for people with money to have fun, it really did precede its reputation. Soon after she reached the reception desk, a lady entertained her and told her what floor and room to go to. She was also given a key to the room.
She headed to the elevator, which was descending, and waited for her turn to ride it. But when it finally opened, an unexpected surprise was in front of her.
Other than Landon, there was a new addition to the list of the least people she wanted to see. Kai, whom she had met at the bar last time, was standing inside the elevator, looking just as surprised as she was.
Shit. Lucy couldn’t stop cursing inwardly, as she wished she hadn’t come across him too soon. After their meeting that ended with a provocation, Lucy dared not stray into bars anymore, fearing he would pop out of nowhere and drag her to see Landon. After all, Kai was Landon’s number 1 fan.
The guy dressed immaculately, but his roguish charm couldn’t be covered as the collar of his shirt was unbuttoned, letting a part of his collarbones and golden chest peek from the gap. According to the information she dug about him after their meeting last time, Kai did not lack any female admirers. And it’s clear why it was.
Like Landon, Kai had this certain aura around him. However, compared to Kai, Lucy still preferred Landon’s type.
Stop. Why am I even comparing them? Landon should no longer be an option for her.
Besides, there was no way she would pursue any romantic relationship in the future. Her marriage with Landon had given her enough experience.
Facing Kai, whose surprise was replaced with a frown as his eyes lowered and focused elsewhere, Lucy nodded at him. It was hard to ignore him, not when his eyes were brimming with something she couldn’t point out.
However, he didn’t move. No. He didn’t step out of the elevator, which struck her strangely.
"Do you mind stepping to the side?" Not wanting to know why he was acting weird; Lucy entered the elevator before it was about to close.
Kai didn’t block her, thankfully. However, he also didn’t leave.
Lucy didn’t want to deal with or think of what he was there for, so she just faced the front. But unfortunately, the elevator was made with steel that served as a mirror. Hence, she could still meet his eyes even with her back towards him when she raised her head.
Putting both hands in his pockets, Kai leaned gracefully against the wall of the elevator. He watched her with amused eyes before his lips moved to speak.
"Do you know who I was with just now?"
Hearing him, Lucy really did not want to reply. But she felt that if she didn’t, Kai would continue to pester her. And she desired none of that.
Lucy didn’t turn to glance at him. "Well, if you want to say, who can stop you?"
Kai snorted. "You’d wish you didn’t say that if you knew who it was."
Lucy instantly had a bad feeling about this.
Kai, however, didn’t see it, or maybe he didn’t care as he watched her face from the mirrored wall in front. "It’s Landon. It’s your husband. He was with me at the bar."
A deadly silence suddenly fell inside the elevator.
He was having fun in this. He knows this. She knows it, too. Lucy knew Kai would never let her be as soon as he saw her in the city. He was far more loyal to Landon than anyone else. But the thing that she didn’t understand was he had no business in doing this to her.
Refusing to be intimidated or showing even a slight reaction, Lucy smiled. "Oh. And?"
Her expression was not right. Kai was expecting her to show much more reaction than this. At least, maybe a little panic on her part.
It bored him a bit. But he wasn’t done yet.
"Do you know he’s been looking for you?" Seeing her face not changing, Kai got his answer, even without it being said verbally. "Then, do you also know that he won’t stop until he gets you? Lucy, one thing I should tell you." He stepped forward. "You shouldn’t go too far. I don’t know what transpired between the two of you and what made you leave him. And I won’t tell him about you being here in the city. But don’t betray Landon."
This time, Lucy couldn’t hold back herself. She turned her head to the side a bit, disbelief overwriting the indifference in her eyes. "Betray him?"
"Yes." His eyes looked down to where she had held a keycard.
This hotel was not only something he frequented. Kai and Landon also co-owned it. However, to the public’s knowledge, it was his younger brother, Royce, who managed it. Thus, he recognized that the keycard in Lucy’s hand was not the original key to a room, but a duplicate.
He had given the same duplicate card to a couple of his bed buddies, so he was extremely familiar with it. Of course, he couldn’t rule out that it was someone she knew, a friend, or a family. But last time, he heard, Lucy had no family. As for a friend, Kai doubted she had someone like that in the city since she had just returned.
Thus, he concluded she was there for a man.
That didn’t bode well for him. Not when he was already planning to play the role of a mediator for her and Landon.
Her eyebrows flew up. A laugh tore from her lips as she shook her head.
"I should say the same to your master. But it’s too late to say anything."
Calling Landon his master was only appropriate with how Kai was acting like a dog for him. They were best buddies, and she was sure Kai would do anything to give whatever Landon wanted.
But that begged an answer to her question. If he was so loyal to Landon, why had he not told him about her?
