Chapter 56: Need Her Like She’s Air and Water
The clouds above the sky moved slowly, and eventually, the sun peaked out, pouring rays of golden light.
Despite this scene being normal, the moment some of the rays hit the young woman’s face, Landon couldn’t help but hold his breath. He shouldn’t be the only one who was feeling this way. The woman looked like a fairy who had come down to the mortal world and was unaware of it.
He gazed at her silently when a pair of doe eyes suddenly opened and met his, stealing his breath once more.
The gloom that pervaded his entire being seemed to be swept away like how the world was swept by the coldness of winter, but once spring arrived, it soon became warm.
"So beautiful..."
The words caught in his throat were heard from somewhere behind him. Somehow, people also started to notice her and stop to catch a few glances.
The young woman didn’t seem to notice the attention she was garnering by just sitting under the tree as she raised her arms high to stretch her stiff body. Yet her eyes continued to stare back at him.
A strong breeze carrying the scent of flowers and dew went towards them, moving carelessly so that the front of her skirt was lifted, exposing a pair of fair legs folded underneath her.
Landon’s lips pressed together tightly as he avoided her gaze, wordlessly stepping forward and bringing himself to where she sat.
Lucy: "..."
Landon: "..."
She must have been caught off guard by the sudden turn of events, as her cheeks took on an adorable pinkish color and the tips of her ears turned red.
Seeing him come closer, she was frozen in place, pressing her disobedient skirt down as more wind came to mess around with it. He was only two steps away from her; his cold glance made her hesitate from moving, and she lowered her gaze.
Still, her embarrassment was shown on her face, ears, and neck.
But soon, her face became confused as she felt something fell on her legs.
She hesitated for a moment and looked up to Landon.
Her round face, her innocent eyes, and her red lips were a sight to see from where he stood. Landon felt his throat going dry, but it was not so overwhelming that his thoughts were clouded by desire.
Instead, what he thought surprised him.
He thought whoever married this woman was a lucky man.
...
Landon’s deep gaze silently moved across the empty glass in front of him. He hadn’t realized he had stopped speaking as his mind went to the first time he met Lucy.
On that day, he and Lucy didn’t speak a word. They only exchanged glances at each other before he gave her his jacket to cover herself before he left. However, now that he had remembered it again, Landon realized that day he wasn’t as indifferent as he thought he was.
As it turned out, the first time he had seen her, Landon had already coveted her.
It was his foolishness that made him blind and ignore it.
"Kai." Landon rested his elbows on the bar counter and massaged his temples. His voice was strained and filled with tension. "She was everything."
Kai couldn’t understand such a vague answer and frowned. He looked at him sideways with annoyance. "Everything?" But he still asked to get more answers from Landon.
Landon nodded. "When I met her, she was like a spring breeze, gentle and warm. With her, I could relax and stay calm. That’s what I thought."
He paused, taking a deep breath as he held back the tears that blurred his eyes.
It took him a few seconds to continue his words.
And when he spoke, his voice broke unexpectedly.
"But I was wrong. She wasn’t just someone who could calm the storm inside me, Kai." He raised his head with the corners of his eyes bloodshot, as if the next second, his tears would pour down. "She’s everything to me. I can’t breathe, sleep, eat, and live without her by my side. I don’t know what I would do if she’s really gone."
Kai frowned. "She’s not the only woman in the world. You’re young and you can find—"
Landon knew he was comforting him, but he shook his head to stop Kai from ending his sentence. His friend has never been in a serious relationship, jumping from one girl to another, never treating love as real.
He can indeed find another woman. But he wouldn’t have rejected all the women his mother had sent to him to marry to forget Lucy if it was that easy. And most importantly, another woman can never be Lucy.
Lucy is the only woman he needs in his life.
"It’s different, Kai." Landon waved his hand and forced a bitter smile at his friend in front of him. But his eyes were filled with deep, profound meaning. "I need her like she’s my air and water."
Kai laughed inwardly as he looked at the solemn appearance of his best friend. The first time he had seen Landon like this was when his father died, and he vowed to take control of Westwood Group. Now, Landon talked with the same intensity, and thus, Kai no longer doubted Landon’s sincerity toward Lucy.
But not doubting and not revealing what he knew was different.
The night he met Lucy at a bar stressed Kai, and he pursed his lips, gazing at Landon with a complex swirl of emotions in his heart. A faint sense of guilt stirred inside him as he released a sigh.
Landon and Lucy. One was his best friend, and the other was his best friend’s wife.
Although he should do what a friend should do and reveal that he had met Lucy to Landon, Kai did not speak of it.
It’s not that he didn’t pity Landon, his friend, and wanted to help Lucy hide. But it was because it was not his position to reveal something so big. Besides, he didn’t know what Lucy truly wanted by hiding away and returning.
But as long as it didn’t harm Landon, he was willing to hide it for her.
However, he couldn’t promise not to try to help Landon a bit if an opportunity arises to bring their worlds together.
He sighed deeply as he emptied another glass of gin.
