The Billionaire's Ex-Wife Returns! -
Chapter 51: Cornered
Chapter 51: Cornered
As expected, the police came quickly.
But Lucy became thoughtful when she saw them outside her door through the pinhole.
Because they weren’t alone.
The woman and man making a lot of noise were also standing beside the police officers. They looked no different from earlier, but their behavior became obedient and respectful, unlike those who had made such an uproar and scary threats downstairs.
The woman in particular, even shed some tears and wiped them with her sleeves, looking pitiful like a mother who had just lost her child.
Suddenly, a cold chill entered Lucy’s heart. She looked back to the living room where the little boy was still sitting on the single-seater sofa, cowering and trying to push himself deeper into the back of it. He looked more miserable now than when she first saw him.
It was as if the monsters finally caught him.
Lucy didn’t really want to get herself involved with this matter. But she couldn’t ignore the boy either. Especially now that there’s a strange situation in front of her.
The knock continued, more forceful and demanding.
At the same time, the boy’s parent also started to act.
The soundproofing of the house was not that great, so she could hear the voices outside the door.
"Miss! We’re the police! Can you please open the door?"
"My son! He’s in there, right? Oh my God, he suddenly disappeared and I couldn’t find him. Why is he in there? We don’t even know who lives in that apartment... why would he go there?" the woman became hysterical and shed even more tears.
The man also acted alongside her. "My son is extremely shy around people. Officers, you have to make sure my son is safe! I don’t know what the person who lives there wanted to do with my son!"
The officers outside the door were irritated with their incessant rambling and shouting, but they dared not complain, as this was a normal reaction of a parent whose child had just disappeared.
Although they received a report of a child abuse from a woman, the appearance of the boy’s parent and their sorrowful expressions were too sincere for it to be called ’pretentious’. They seemed really desperate to find their son.
So, the officers wanted to meet the woman who called them first and verify the truth. What if the boy’s parent were telling the truth?
The longer Lucy didn’t open the door for them, the more the officers believed the parent’s statement. They had long questioned them when they first came into the building and were told that their son disappeared all of a sudden, so they made a lot of noise in the neighborhood.
Behind the door, Lucy couldn’t help but sneer at the group. But it was also true that she couldn’t keep them waiting.
So, while the boy cowered in the living room, hoping for the shadows to swallow him and magically disappear, Lucy twisted the doorknob and finally opened the door.
The moment the door opened, the voices and noises they were making outside her house gradually lessened before they completely shut their mouths. Four pairs of eyes looked at her at the same time, surprise coloring their faces.
"Hello, officers. Sorry for the delay. I was in the kitchen."
The officers nodded understandably, but they couldn’t keep their eyes off her.
Standing in front of them, Lucy wore her sleepwear—a thin chemise. Her hair was flowing down her shoulders to her waist, with pale skin and a gorgeous face.
Her appearance momentarily silenced the group outside. Only the woman looked at her with a hateful look and reacted quickly when her eyes glimpsed at the boy sitting in the living room.
"Son!"
The woman cried out and tried to push Lucy away to get inside the house.
But surprisingly, Lucy didn’t budge from her position and looked down at the woman with a cold gaze.
"Wha—what are you looking at? Why are you blocking my way!" the woman didn’t get what she wanted and looked accusingly at Lucy. "That’s my son inside. Why are you stopping me from going to him!"
Lucy didn’t respond to the woman’s provocative words and glanced at the officers behind the woman.
Their faces looked serious and stared back at her.
"Miss, can you please step back and let the child’s mother get in to look at her son?" asked one of the officers.
Lucy tilted her head and smiled. "And if I don’t?"
The officer frowned before he said, "Then we have to force our way in."
"May I see your papers, then?"
"What?"
"A search warrant. You need that to force your way in, right?" Lucy wasn’t afraid when the officers narrowed their eyes.
"The parents are here for their child. There’s no need for a search warrant," the officer replied.
"But I clearly reported that a child is being abused. So, why should the preparator meet the victim?" Lucy continued to ask. "Or are you trying to push the child further to his death?"
The other officer stepped in and said, "Miss, be careful of your words. We’re just doing our job, so please be understanding and try not to obstruct it."
"That’s right! A stranger shouldn’t get into our family matters and try to keep our son! That’s kidnapping!" the man beside the officers turned to them. "Officers, I want to report a kidnapping! Take this woman to the police station if she doesn’t give us our son!"
As the man kept talking, his eyes wouldn’t stop moving sideways to one of the officers. It didn’t take long for Lucy to guess what was happening.
With a sneer, Lucy looked at the four people acting in front of her. Who knew she would stumble on this play?
But time has passed too long and she shouldn’t let this continue.
Instead of answering their provocation, Lucy put her phone beside her ear.
Under their watchful eyes, Lucy said, "Hello? This is the Grid City police headquarters, right? I would like to ask for help. I’m being threatened by people with weapons."
There was a sound coming from the phone, then Lucy answered, "Yes, two of them have guns. Please, hurry up."
Throughout the call, she didn’t change her voice or her tone. She didn’t pretend to be anything, but her calmness in dealing with the situation made her story even more believable, making the four outside her house speechless.
"You—!" the woman couldn’t believe that Lucy dared to do that in front of the two officers.
Even the officers were flustered and couldn’t stop her in time.
After finally finishing the call, Lucy smiled at the group again. Then sidestepped and said, "Now, you can come in."
Such a gentle and welcoming attitude, but no one from the four stepped forward. How could they after the call she had just made? If they really went into her house, wouldn’t they be in even more trouble when the police from the headquarters came?
In Grid City, citizens could just call any local police station for help and the police officers would immediately be dispatched to their location. It was an efficient way to keep the crime in the city very low and the criminals on their toes.
However, this knowledge was only known to locals and most people who had just moved there called the emergency hotline for help, not the police station.
This proved that Lucy was not new to their city, compared to their initial suspicion.
As Lucy had suspected, the two police officers knew the man and woman. They arrived too quickly at her door and even brought the two to her house. She made it clear in the report that there was possible abuse involved, yet the officers didn’t seem to hear her words at all.
Seeing them not taking a step forward satisfied Lucy as she turned around and went to the living room in a lazy manner. Her dress that went past her knees swayed along her body.
She sat on the other single-seater sofa beside the boy and crossed her legs. Then, started to play with her phone.
However, she wasn’t exactly playing because, on her phone screen, the message interface between her and Landon was displayed.
A new message had come from Landon while she was on the phone with the police headquarters.
Landon’s number was still under an unregistered number without a contact name, but Lucy had engraved them in her mind for so long that she couldn’t forget about it.
[I arranged a new assistant who will help you. He should be on his way to meet you.]
It was a weekday, and Lucy should be at the Southwest Branch. However, due to her meeting with Chelsea and now, in this situation, Lucy didn’t go there.
Now that Landon had told her this, she couldn’t ignore him anymore. She had to reply, even if she didn’t want to.
After thinking about it for so long, Lucy still couldn’t come up with something. Her body instinctively didn’t know what to tell him. So, she looked away from her phone for a second and saw the little boy next to her, leaning slightly towards her.
