Chapter 50: Changes in her Plans
Chapter 50: Changes in her Plans
Lucy ran out as quickly as she could. She couldn’t care less about the stares she was getting as she ran past the people on the sidewalk, with tears slipping down her eyes and staining her pale cheeks.
She had imagined meeting Landon countless times, and in those imaginations, she would stab him deeply in the chest with a knife.
Yet, even with those endless dreams of meeting him after almost four years, nothing could have prepared her for this to happen.
Why was Landon back already? She questioned inwardly.
With shaking hands, Lucy took her phone out and dialed Mrs. Baker. It didn’t take long for the latter to answer.
"Lucy?" Mrs. Baker’s voice seemed surprised with her sudden call.
Lucy took a few deep breaths, supporting her body with the wall beside her, and answered, "Mrs. Baker, did anything happen when they came to town?"
Mrs. Baker replied, "I don’t think so. Everyone acted according to what you instructed..." She paused for a second and then continued, "Did something happen, Lucy?"
Although Lucy never told Mrs. Baker or anyone in their town why she made them act in front of the two foreigners who came to their town, they trusted her judgment. Lucy knew this, and that’s why she made them do it instead of paying someone else to pretend.
It would be more genuine if the town locals did it. That’s what she thought when she made them act.
And this should’ve made Landon stay in Virella City for a while, enough for her plans to continue.
But Landon had returned just a day after he went to Auromont town. Did he doubt Mrs. Baker’s words? What did he find out?
Lucy grew increasingly anxious and panicked at the thought that Landon must have found out about her being in Grid City. And worst, he might have found out about her daughter!
Swallowing the bile that rose in her throat, Lucy gripped her phone and forced out a reply, "No... everything’s fine."
"If you need help, we’ll be glad to offer it, Lucy."
Lucy pursed her lips. "I know. Thank you, Mrs. Baker."
After hanging up, Lucy rested her back against the wall. Her hands fell beside her legs as she looked up at the cloudy sky above.
She recalled how Landon chased after her just a few minutes ago and how they brushed their shoulders. His scent still lingered in her and hadn’t yet dispersed.

Lucy returned to her apartment and as soon as she got inside, she took a look at the wall where her plans were all laid bare. The faces of the Westwood family, the Leblanc family, and the people who made her life suffer for the duration of her marriage are all pinned on the wall.
And Landon’s picture was above them.
Now that he had returned, her plans must change.
Lucy didn’t think she could avoid meeting him forever. It was impossible when she was already involved with him. And she didn’t want the same accident in the café to happen to her when she was unprepared.
Staring at the wall, Lucy’s brain worked fast.
Since she could never avoid meeting Landon... why not just let it happen?
At this moment, there was a knock on her door. When Lucy opened to see who it was, she had already made a guess between Old Penny and Samuel. However, when the door swung open, she saw a little boy in front of her.
Lucy: ...
She poked her head out and looked around the corridor, but saw no one else was there.
After confirming no adult was outside, Lucy finally looked down at the boy.
The boy was pale, extremely so, as if he hadn’t been out of the sun for a long time. Despite his young age, his face looked handsome. And his eyes were big and dark.
She stared at him with a confused expression. The little boy also glanced at her with the same curious gaze.
Finally, Lucy crouched down at the little boy’s eye level and asked, "Hi there, sweetie. Is there something you want?"
The boy didn’t speak, and he pointed his fingers behind her.
Lucy looked behind and saw nothing in particular. But the boy continued to point his fingers. Following the tip of his finger, her eyes moved along his pale and thin skin. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary as he looked just like an ordinary child out to play around.
But something didn’t go past Lucy’s attention.
Following the little boy’s exposed arms, a dark mark was hidden beneath his sleeve. It didn’t look concerning at first, but Lucy found that there were other spots that had the same mark on his body.
Lucy met the little boy’s gaze and found herself unable to speak.
Bang!
"That little shit! Where did he run off to?!"
"Keep your voice down. What if someone hears you?"
Two voices belonging to a man and a woman were heard outside the window in the corridor. Lucy stepped out of her apartment and looked out. The two people frantically walked in front of the apartment building.
The woman was thin, and her cheeks were sunken, but she was dressed properly. On the other hand, the man was fat and his belly stuck out of his shirt, overstraining the buttons in front, as if it would pop out at any moment.
If she remembered correctly, they should be one of the tenants in the building.
Lucy returned to her house and stared at the little boy, who was still standing in front of her door and watching her. To be honest, it wasn’t her business and she shouldn’t involve herself in other people’s family matters. Besides, she had already decided not to get herself attached to anything in this place since she would leave when she was done with what she wanted to do.
"If I find that little shit, I’m going to break his legs and make sure he regrets ever coming out of the house!"
Lucy frowned when she heard their words.
"Do you want to come in?" she asked as she heard the series of noises they were making below.
The little boy didn’t open his mouth to respond. But his head slowly nodded.
Lucy brought the little boy inside her house with her hand on his shoulder. When she touched him, her frown deepened as she noticed how bony the boy had become. The child also flinched at her touch, prompting her to take her hand off him.
Without touching him again, Lucy led him to her small living room.
The little boy didn’t speak even once and kept his head down the entire time, making Lucy feel pity towards him. She walked to the kitchen and fetched a glass of water for him to drink. But when she returned to the living room, she saw the boy hadn’t taken a seat and continued standing near the door.
She felt as if her heart was covered by a thick fog, causing her to feel suffocated.
Lucy didn’t know how to handle this kind of situation. But she knew that the boy needed to be saved.
"Come here and sit down." Lucy motioned to the seat across from her, afraid that the boy was afraid of being near anyone.
She also placed the glass of water on the coffee table in the center and added, "Drink this while I make a call, okay?"
She watched the boy slowly nod his head and move his tiny feet across the floor. His head was still lowered, but she could see his eyes watching her timidly.
Lucy withdrew her gaze, stood up, and walked into her room. Then, she called the nearest police station.
"This is Grid City local police station. What can we help you?"
"I want to report a case..."
It didn’t take long for a police car to come and stop in front of the building.
Seeing the police come through, Lucy came out of her room and gently told the boy, "You don’t have to be afraid now. Help has come..."
The entire time, the boy had never raised his head. But the moment he heard the sirens coming from the police, he finally looked up and stared at Lucy with eyes filled with tears.
Lucy didn’t understand why he was crying. Was he glad he was saved? But the boy’s body continued to shake and his lips curled downward.
"Mhmm... mmh! Mhmhm!"
The boy mumbled as he shook his head. Lucy couldn’t understand what he was saying, but the way his eyes looked at her felt so familiar.
It was the eyes of someone who was afraid and betrayed.
But why was it so?
Lucy wondered and approached the little boy.
She crouched down again and told him, "Don’t be afraid. Your parents won’t be able to hurt you with the help of the police. They’re here to help you."
But the boy continued to shake his head vigorously and even bit his fingers nervously. Tears continued to flow down his eyes, but he never spoke a word.
At this time, a knock was heard on her door.
The police should be here.
