Chapter 48: A Glimpse of Her
Landon stepped out of the car; his tall frame shadowed against the sleek car. He adjusted his coat with an effortless flick of his hands, she remembered too well.
Lucy’s breath hitched, panic clawing at her chest.
No. He can’t be back!
Landon should still be in Virela City after visiting Auramont. She confirmed it with Mrs. Baker; he had been there.
If her guess was right, he should stay there for a bit longer to investigate her life there. This would then buy her a lot of time to finish up her plans. In addition, she made sure that they wouldn’t meet so soon.
Then what the hell was going on here?
Why is Landon standing in front of her?!
Her mind scrambled for answers, for reasons why he might have returned early. Was he into her plan? No, no one knows what she planned to do. She didn’t even discuss everything with Vanessa.
Did he return because he discovered she was here?
Lucy thought of Kai and cursed immediately. They only met last night. Why did he have to say something to Landon?
Though she suspected Kai was the one who told Landon, Lucy still had some doubts.
Across the building, Lucy watched as another car pulled up.
---
Landon fixed his eyes on the skyscraper in front of him. Westwood Group belonged to his family, and he was the one publicly acknowledged to rule over it. However, he knew that his grandfather still had overall control and he could easily give it to his uncle.
It angered and frustrated him that his grandfather still thought of giving it to his uncle, who was nothing but a scourge who wanted to misuse the family assets.
He shook his thoughts away. There was no time to think over something that was already out of his control. He should think of the mountain of work awaiting him in his office.
The brisk air hit his face as he finally took his first step toward the building. He barely had time to take another step before the sound of tires screeching to a halt sounded behind him.
The moment Yvonne stepped out of the car, Landon’s eyes narrowed into a look of impatience.
When is she giving up? Landon coldly thought as irritation arose within him.
"Landon!" Yvonne approached him briskly.
"Why can’t you get it through your head, Yvonne?" Landon’s voice cut through the morning chill. "Stop following me. Whatever you think is between us—it’s over. It’s been over for a long time."
His words dripped with cold, stinging finality, and Yvonne’s face crumbled for a brief second before she masked her pain. But her tears continued to fill her eyes.
They were outside the Westwood Group, and many people were watching them. Can’t he speak a bit softer to her? This was extremely humiliating!
"Just give me a bit of your time. Let me explain." Yvonne tried once again. "My father didn’t mean it when he sued your wife. He just wanted to scare her a little."
It was supposed to ease Landon’s hatred towards her and her family. But instead of that, Landon’s rage only rose like lava being expelled out of a raging volcano.
"Save it," he said with a sharp look in his eyes. "No matter what you do or say, the damage is done. If you keep doing this, I will have no choice but to stop negotiating with your father."
"No! Please, don’t do that!" Yvonne grabbed his arm and pleaded. That was the one thing she could never allow to happen!
The reason why she was thickening her face and allowing herself to be humiliated by him, aside from wanting Landon to be hers once more, was because her father’s business hadn’t been in a good position after Landon publicly went against him.
Yvonne’s father wanted her to do everything she could to make Landon change his mind and persuade him to continue partnering with their company. She heard the partnership contract between their family business and Westwood Group was due in a month.
If that completely fell through, her family business would be in danger!
Yvonne tightened her hand on Landon’s sleeve, while in her head, she thought of how to use this to her advantage. She was sure people were already looking at them. It would be better if gossip turned up and spread around quickly that she and Landon were back together. Then it would be enough for her to stir enough attention and perhaps force Landon to agree with their engagement.
But Landon could see through her thoughts perfectly.
After all, this was not the first time Yvonne did this. Rather, Yvonne also took advantage of him months after Lucy was gone. She made news of their engagement when it was never even discussed. It even made it to the news and no doubt it was a work of the Leblanc family.
"If you don’t want to get hurt. Stay away far away from me, Yvonne."
A terrifying, low voice came from above her head.
Landon snatched his hand away from her, almost too quickly, as if he was afraid of catching bacteria from her.
At that moment, Yvonne knew she could never save her family business. And most importantly, her relationship with Landon.
As Landon turned away from Yvonne, he felt an inexplicable weight settle over him, like a pair of eyes boring into the back of his head.
He stopped, the instinct unsettling him.
Landon turned around swiftly and scanned his eyes around, gaze sweeping around him, finding nothing out of place.
But out of the corner of his eye, he caught a fleeting glimpse—a figure slipping into the café across the road. It was quick, like a shadow, but something about that figure nagged at him.
Lucy?
The thought flashed through his mind with a sudden clarity. He could never mistake someone with Lucy. Her entire existence was completely memorized by him.
And without a second of hesitation, he bolted in that direction, his heart pacing inside him with a quick beat.
He could hear Yvonne’s voice sounding behind him as she tried to catch him, but the only thought in his head was the shadow that went past his eyes.
Landon quickened his feet, with each step almost flying across the road, where cars pressed their horns in anger.
But not one bit did Landon pause his steps, as his focus was entirely captured by the café in front of him, where the figure entered.
