Chapter 46: Still Chasing After Him
Chapter 46: Still Chasing After Him
Landon stepped off the plane, the familiar buzz of the airport filling his ears. Despite the suggestion of the airport staff to take his suitcase and bring him to where his ride was, Landon dragged his suitcase with him and walked away.
He was not in the mood for anything. Right now, he just wanted to go back to his office and begin his work so he could finish early. Though there was no way he could complete his duties as quickly as he wanted, Landon still wanted to take the chance to get more time to himself and continue the investigation of Lucy’s life when she left him.
He was looking forward to a quiet moment to collect his thoughts, but that hope vanished into thin air the instant a woman walked into his line of sight, blocking his way.
"Landon, what a coincidence!" Yvonne’s sweet voice rang in his ears. "Who would have thought we would meet here?"
Landon froze, his heart sinking, as he didn’t expect to meet Yvonne now.
She stood in front of him with a bright smile, her short-bobbed hair swaying as she stepped closer to him.
He stepped back.
Hurt flashed across her face like a slap. But it evaporated as quickly as it appeared. "Where were you previously? I was in Isla Paraiso with some of my friends. The summer on the island was the best, you should really visit there sometime!"
Landon walked off as she started to speak, not even listening to a word of what she was saying.
But Yvonne didn’t give up. She dragged her own suitcase and walked side by side with him.
"You know, it has been a while since we hang out with the others. Do you remember our classmate Erin? She’s getting married soon and wants to meet with everyone again." Yvonne hurried to match his pace, but due to Landon’s long legs, it proved to be a difficult thing to do.
Besides, she was wearing a beautiful dress and high heels to match her look. She chose to wear them so she could impress Landon.
That’s right. Their chance encounter at the airport was no coincidence at all.
Emma messaged her about Landon’s time of arrival, and since 2 a.m., Yvonne had been waiting for him at the airport.
Landon continued walking away, treating her as if she was a fly flying around him. She was definitely not worth noticing.
"Landon, wait! Ah!"
When Landon still didn’t respond to her and continued on his way without looking at her, intense dread filled her.
After that incident almost four years ago, Landon distanced himself from her. Yvonne even heard that he picked a fight with her father because they decided to sue Lucy. Of course, nothing happened then because Landon’s grandfather intervened and made sure that the Westwood and Leblanc families wouldn’t become sworn enemies.
However, since that day, Landon had never appeared before her again. He never came to visit her. He didn’t even pick up when she tried to call him.
The only time she could meet him was at a social gathering or when there was an important event. However, Landon never spoke to her, even when she tried so hard to catch his attention.
Yvonne still didn’t want to give up, though.
Landon was the only man for her! And she was the only woman who could match up to him!
And so, she resorted to using her old ailment to pull some reaction from him.
"My chest hurts, Landon! Help me!"
A normal person would turn around and show a bit of concern, even if it was toward a stranger who was calling for help while in pain. Yvonne was also sure that Landon, who knew of her condition, wouldn’t be able to stop the urge to turn around!
But as she leaned forward to fake her pain while other people gathered around her, Landon never turned his attention to her.
No! This isn’t how you are supposed to react! Yvonne scrunched up her face bitterly as the distance between her and Landon grew.
"Landon!" Her voice rose, and the false pain she was showing disappeared, replaced by a tremor that hinted at her frustration. "Are you still not over her? She’s gone! She will never return. The two of you never even started, so why won’t you look at me?"
She was burning with hatred and sadness. Yvonne hated Lucy for taking up the spot she had in Landon’s heart. That spot should have been hers. But she stole it from her!
Landon stopped. The sight of Yvonne only made him feel irritated. He tried to ignore her like how he had been doing the past few years, but Yvonne was once again testing his patience and the limit of his control over his temper.
He spun around, a storm raging in his eyes.
He strode toward Yvonne, whose eyes were sparkling with joy while thinking she finally got him to think that he should move on already from Lucy.
However, as Landon approached one step at a time, Yvonne gradually got a closer and clearer view of his face.
That wasn’t the Landon she knew. No. It was a version of him that made her spine tingle with fear.
Yvonne heard a click somewhere, belatedly realizing it came from her heels when she took a step back.
As Landon was getting closer, her body moved backward. Her brain was telling her to run, escape the danger approaching. And as her body did what her brain ordered, Yvonne bumped against her suitcase and fell on the floor.
But Landon didn’t care.
He towered over her as he finally got close enough that she could hear him.
"Lucy will return."
He walked away as soon as he finished saying this.
Yvonne took a while to gather her bearings. Her legs were numb, and her body was still reeling from the fear she felt from him.
Someone asked her if she was alright. Yvonne couldn’t answer as she shook like a leaf.
But her father wasn’t going to forgive her if she lost him.
Yvonne hurried to chase after Landon, who had already driven away to go back to the company.
