Chapter 41: Landon: "Take Me To Her"
Landon stepped into the dirt with his high-end leather shoes. The dust picked up as the wind rolled and the morning sun heatedly shone down on him.
The biting heat seemed to mock Landon’s sudden nervousness as he stood on the main street of the small town. He tried to disguise his appearance as much as he could to look like a local, but his presence seemed too conspicuous as a bear in the middle of a busy street.
He’d spent a few days in Virela City, much to Alaric’s displeasure. His secretary’s task of mingling with investors and potential business partners had already ended on the day he arrived there. But with his boss there, he couldn’t possibly leave alone.
Landon walked toward the first person he could find. But just like how he started when he first arrived, he received a disappointing answer.
Still, giving up now that he had gone so far would be out of his character.
He continued asking around. He had spoken to shopkeepers, local diners, to anyone who would listen. His inquiries about Lucy did not stop until dusk. Alaric was always beside him and helped him with his quest.
Although Auramont was a small town in the outskirts of Virela City, the land it occupied was considerably vast with endless forest and sat below a mountain. Hence, it took a while for Landon to finally reach the end of the town, which was situated near the coast.
"This will be the last place we’re going to look, Landon." Alaric didn’t call him by a title now that they weren’t inside the office. Right now, the two of them were close friends out to find his wife.
"I’m reminding you that you’ve missed a lot of important matters at the company. The CEO cannot be absent for a long time."
Landon forced a nod. "I know."
People who say that owners of a company can relax and stay at home don’t know the real situation of a true CEO. Although they do have a lot of freedom and can come to the company whenever they want, they still have a major task to cover. They were just like a king to a chessboard. They were indispensable.
There was a cluster of houses and buildings right next to each other.
He walked forward with a heavy heart.
Please, give me something. Anything.
Landon held his breath as he prayed to find Lucy. He’d give anything to the world just to see her again. Talk to her. Touch her.
"Mom, a customer!" a young man shouted behind the counter when Landon and Alaric walked inside a diner.
"Give me a second. I need to clean this up first!" a voice replied.
Landon looked at the door where the voice was coming, guessing it was the diner’s owner.
"What do you want to order?" the young man manned the counter without his mother. He looked bored and too lazy to deal with them, but he still did his best to accommodate the customers in front of him.
Landon leaned against the counter as he said, "We’re not here to eat."
The young man raised his head and looked at him with a frustrated look. "What for then?"
"We’re looking for someone."
The young man scoffed. "Then go to the police station and file a missing person report."
"Luciano! That’s not how you talk to a customer!" the woman called out from the kitchen.
"They’re no customer. They’re looking for someone!"
The young man’s reply was met with silence.
But he didn’t seem to be bothered by it as the young man ignored Landon and Alaric, glancing down at his mobile phone to play games.
Landon did not expect any answer from the young man. He wanted to wait for the woman who was inside the kitchen to inquire about Lucy, and hopefully, he would finally get something.
After seconds passed, the curtain covering the kitchen parted, and a middle-aged woman came out. Her plump and round figure approached them as she wiped her hands on the apron tied around her waist.
"You’re here looking for someone?"
Landon nodded.
"But I don’t know if I can help you."
"It’s fine. We’re just trying our lucks."
The middle-aged woman looked at them for a brief second before she said, "You’re not here for trouble, are you?"
It made sense that the woman was wary of them. There were two reasons one would look for someone. Either they were looking for someone with good intentions, or they were searching to do something bad.
Besides, they weren’t local to this place. So it made Landon and Alaric even more suspicious.
"We’re not bad people." Landon stepped closer to the woman with a gentle expression. "I’m looking for my..."
Landon suddenly stopped talking as his eyes fell on a framed portrait hanging on the wall beside the refrigerator.
In the picture were three people standing with arms on their shoulders, huddled together. They seemed close and smiled at the camera as they stood in front of the restaurant. Two of them were the middle-aged woman and the young man behind the counter.
And in the middle of the two was Lucy.
"This woman... where is she?" Landon asked, seemingly lost in a daze as he moved closer to the wall where the framed picture was.
When no one answered him, he repeated, almost too quickly, "Where is she?"
The middle-aged woman stared at him.
"I don’t know."
Her voice was low and soft.
But Landon was not pleased with her answer. "What do you mean you don’t know? You must know where she is if she took a picture with you!"
He didn’t believe the middle-aged woman’s words. She must be lying to him.
He was this close to finding her. He wouldn’t let anyone get in his way.
It took so long for him to get a clue of where she was, took too long for him to get a glimpse of her, even if it was through a picture. He didn’t even question who sent him the package or why it suddenly appeared in front of him.
"Take me to her."
