Chapter 40: A Friend of an Enemy

"Let go of me, Kai."

His sharp glare intensified as a twisted smile formed on his lips.

"Or what?"

"Or I’ll scream."

His tone was light. "Do it."

Lucy frowned as she contemplated doing it. But she resisted, as she knew that Kai was not going to let her go even if she did scream.

He hadn’t changed at all, even during these years. Kai Denvers was a man many feared for his ruthlessness and reckless behavior. He never thought of the consequences of his actions, and the scar on his face was the evidence of it.

Lucy heard that Kai got that scar when he was in high school. He was the leader of his own gang, but he messed up with the wrong people. But at the end of it, he won and the people he offended retreated and were later swallowed up by him.

However, Lucy didn’t know of Kai until Landon brought him to her. He introduced the scarred man to her as his best friend. A strange combination, really. But Lucy was not one to judge a person because of their appearance nor their past.

And Kai proved himself to be a quirky man. Because despite his fearsome looks, he was kinder than anyone she had met among the people involved with Landon.

At least, he had never mocked or belittled her like the others.

And so, even though she hadn’t planned to meet him there, Lucy did not run when she recognized him.

Although, right now, she wished she had.

"I didn’t think you’d be someone into that thing." Lucy chuckled softly. And when Kai looked confused by her words, Lucy revealed, "Someone who’d be into voyeurism."

Kai’s expression contorted with anger and disgust. He almost backed away as if she had suddenly transformed into a slimy monster.

Almost. As his expression turned normal again and he laughed coldly, as if he guessed correctly what she was aiming.

Tsk.

Lucy rolled her eyes as she leaned against the counter.

"There’s no specific reason. I was just fed up by everything." Since there was nothing she could do to get him off her back, Lucy decided to tease him with a little something. And hopefully, it was enough to satisfy his curiosity. "I learned that nothing in this world is more important than myself. And I never belonged to the world Landon lived in. You must have already seen it, at least once."

"But he didn’t want you to leave him."

Lucy felt insulted as she whipped her head to face him. "Really? Is that what he told you?"

Kai shook her head. "No. But that’s what I saw when you disappeared."

This time, Lucy could no longer hold back the laugh that she was holding. It pealed slowly and gently before stopping abruptly, as if it had never happened. All the while, Kai never tore his eyes off her, seemingly even more perplexed by her reaction.

"Please, just because you’re his best friend, you don’t have to make up stories for him. Because I won’t return to him." Lucy didn’t believe a bit of his words. She knew what she saw and heard. And that was enough for her.

Even if what Kai said was the truth, blood, tears, and life were spilled. What would his words change?

Nothing.

Kai was irritated by her reaction. He was trying to give her a chance to reconcile with Landon. He had seen how his best friend wasted the past few years into nothingness after Lucy left. And Kai didn’t want Landon to continue chasing after a ghost when said ghost was doing fine while he was not.

He didn’t know what had gone between Lucy and Landon. He had been out of the country for a few months before Lucy left. But Kai knew that the two of them couldn’t go on like this. At least, he knew if Landon didn’t get a proper closure with Lucy, he would end up losing himself.

And looking at Lucy right now, he really thinks what he was doing was the right thing to do.

"You’re right. I’m doing this for him." Kai let her go and turned away to take another sip from his glass. "But it’s not a make-up story. At least you should know that he really does want you by his side."

Before she could say anything to him, Kai pushed himself off the bar counter and took a step away from her, as if he was about to leave.

"And I can tell you’re not totally over him."

He winked before he turned around and slipped into the crowd, disappearing like he was just a ghoul of the past.

Lucy glared in the direction he disappeared and sighed.

"What not over him? I’m so over him I just want to strangle him to death." She scoffed and took another swig from her glass, but choked as the sourness exploded in her mouth.

She really wished she had ordered a glass of alcohol just so she could forget about tonight. But after undergoing two surgeries and having her uterus completely removed, Lucy could no longer drink some. The last time she did, she was sent to the ER, and the alcohol was pumped out of her stomach. The doctor told her it was another side effect of her operation.

Though she could go by without alcohol, Lucy missed its taste. And sometimes, it could help when she wanted to forget about something. Even for a brief moment.

Lucy stayed inside the bar for another 30 minutes, only because she hoped to not bump into Kai if he hadn’t left the bar yet. But she couldn’t stay there long either. Now that someone she and Landon knew was there, someone else could also pop out of nowhere, and Lucy didn’t want to take that risk for now.

After paying for her drink, Lucy returned to her apartment. The neighborhood was silent and dark, as the area was currently being redeveloped. So, not many people were on the streets.

Thankfully, the lights on the streets were bright and were still on.

But coupled with the feeling of being alone on the street and the abandoned houses around her, Lucy couldn’t help but quicken her steps.

Soon, she reached the gate of the apartment building with the small convenience store’s door still open.

"Little girl, come here for a second."

A voice suddenly sounded inside the store.

In Virela City.

Landon’s fever finally went down after a day’s rest. But as soon as he felt fine, he immediately started searching for more clues to find Lucy.

And this time, he ended up in a small town called Auramont.

Somehow, Landon felt that he would find something in there.
