Chapter 36: A Dog is Tamer and Cuter When Asking a Favor

"You’re in Grid City? Why?" Mrs. Anderson asked. She seemed to wonder what Lucy’s connection to this country was. Lucy hasn’t had the chance to tell her that she was born in the country of Arendale.

"I thought of changing the environment. Thankfully, there’s a job hiring for a painter so, I took it and flew here." Lucy resumed her task, mixing the colors on the palette. With this, Mrs. Anderson should give up now.

"Well, that’s too bad. My daughter will surely sulk if I don’t give her your painting."

"I’m really sorry, Mrs. Anderson." Lucy apologized. "If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up now, since I still have some things to do."

"Alright!" Mrs. Anderson did not insist.

As soon as their call ended, Mrs. Anderson looked out the window and murmured, "Grid City, huh..."

Lucy finished a quarter of the wall. It was not an easy task, after all. She was working alone and the amount of work was even more this time. But this wasn’t the first time she drew on walls to decorate an entire room into a fantastic place.

The first time she did it was when she redecorated an empty room in the house for her daughter, Adeline.

At 11 am, Lucy cleaned up to go out and have her lunch. Just as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw Erica and Mark entering the building with sour expressions on their faces.

The moment their eyes fell on her, they changed instantly, and their steps accelerated. Lucy had no time to ignore them as they stepped right into her view and blocked her way.

"Was it you?" Erica glared at her.

Lucy gazed back at her with a raised brow, seemingly clueless about what she was talking about. Of course, that was a lie. She clearly knew why they were there. But isn’t it a bit too late for them to come in now?

Glancing down at her wristwatch, Lucy saw it was already 11:07 am.

They sure took their time to come here while looking like victims who needed justice.

"Whatever do you mean?" Lucy asked back, not intending to confirm or deny anything.

"Cut the bullshit, it’s you, right?!" Erica seethed in anger, her face and eyes were turning red.

"You have to be more elaborate if you want me to answer your question." Lucy smiled at her, much to Erica’s dislike. "I’m not going to answer ’yes’ or ’no’ to a question I could be accused of anything. What if you asked me if I killed your neighbor’s little sister’s pet?"

She knew this was only making things worse. But Lucy was having too much fun messing with Erica.

As expected, her response was only met with Erica’s intense glare. It almost looked like there would be a murder that was about to happen.

Had it been in the past, Lucy would hesitate and try not to get in trouble with anyone. She wouldn’t even dare get on someone’s radar to avoid trouble. Even when Emma and her friends belittled her and did a lot of horrible things to her, Lucy swallowed up her shame and pride.

But now that everything has changed, Lucy somehow could see the appeal of messing with people’s rhythm. No wonder they find it fun to mess with her.

Erica wanted to slap Lucy’s face for many reasons. But the highlight of it all was the fact that she received a notice that the company was letting her go. The reason? It was because they needed to lay off employees from their department.

What a bullshit reason! Why would an affluent and powerful company like Westwood Group suddenly lay off employees? They had so much money and power that no one would dare offend them. Yet, they were being released from their position.

Them! Her and Mark! Not any other employees.

This was even more embarrassing than getting laid off with multiple other employees. Now, there was a rumor going around their group chat that she and Mark were caught in a scandalous situation and that’s why they were fired.

But the decision was final.

Erica even went to the HR department to ask why they were fired. But the only answer she got was:

"It’s been decided by the head department. Why didn’t you stay still and do your job? You just had to do something that annoyed the top officials in the company."

Erica had to face the humiliation of taking her things from her desk in front of everyone!

"There’s no reason the company would fire me. It’s because I didn’t come yesterday, isn’t that, right?" Erica stepped forward, trying to intimidate Lucy. "Aren’t you so petty? I’m here now, so tell the HR department to reinstate my position!"

Lucy coldly released a chuckle. Well, look at this. A dog barking when she’s kicked. Ah, that’s not right. A dog is tamer and cuter. Erica, on the other hand... she’s rabid.

Initially, Lucy wanted to use Erica and Mark for her own use. But they’re too untamable. She wouldn’t use anything that can bite in the ass in the long run.

"Why don’t you do it yourself? Ah," Lucy paused briefly to let the smile on her lips widen. "You probably can’t, since you’re not an employee there anymore."

Lucy slid to the side and added, "On another note, is that an attitude one should have when asking a favor?"

"What? Did you think I would beg you?" Erica sneered.

"No. But even a monkey knows when it’s asking for a favor." Lucy walked away from them. But she was still surprised by what happened.

When she made those ridiculous conditions, she didn’t really think of using it like this. She thought when the time came, she could use it against Landon. But to think Landon would stay true to his words.

She wondered how much she could take advantage of this until he found out the painter he hired was her?

Lucy chose to go to a restaurant on the other side of the city and ordered a few things for her lunch. As she took her last bite of her meal, the door to the restaurant was pushed open and a group of women strutted inside. Each of them wore expensive and beautiful dresses, but their aura was too intimidating for anyone to look at them.

The group soon climbed to the second floor of the restaurant and disappeared from sight. But Lucy couldn’t tear her eyes away from the direction where they had gone. And most precisely, she couldn’t help but feel excitement when she saw a familiar face from the group.

It was her former mother-in-law, Patricia Westwood.
