The Billionaire's Ex-Wife Returns! -
Chapter 13: Contrast
Chapter 13: Contrast
At the first sign of dawn, Landon shot to his feet and got ready for the day. He drove out of the house before his mother or sister could persuade him to visit Yvonne in the hospital.
Hearing the maid report her son’s departure, Patria’s face flashed with worry. "Do you think he went out early to see Yvonne?"
After Landon refused to answer her call and didn’t come to see Yvonne even after they told him she collapsed, Patria started to become afraid that her dream of Yvonne becoming her daughter-in-law was slipping away from her again.
Emma chewed on the sausage inside her mouth first before replying, "He’s probably already regretting not coming to see her last night. When he passed me by earlier, I thought I saw a ghost. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked unkempt. Hmph! Serves him right!"
Patricia thought what her daughter said was right. Landon should only think of Yvonne and he should try to coax her into staying at their home for recuperation. It was the only way for her to bring them closer to each other!
"And what about that useless woman?" Patricia settled her eyes on the empty seat at the dining table where Lucy usually sat when she would come to eat.
"Who knows? I haven’t seen her since yesterday. She must be hiding in the house," Emma answered with a shrug. She hadn’t told anyone about seeing Lucy at the hospital or the words they exchanged in the corridor.
When she thought of how Lucy answered her after Emma suggested divorcing her brother, she suddenly became even more excited and agitatedly spoke. "Mother, have you talked to Lucy? Did she agree to divorce my brother?"
Patricia sighed. "She’s persistent. Do you know I even offered her money to divorce your brother? All she did was cry and refuse! She even ran away from me."
"All gold diggers do that in the beginning, Mother. She’s definitely acting! What a bitch!" Emma slammed her fork on the table. "Next time, we should bring cash and slap her face with it."
Her mother considered it seriously. Patricia had never agreed to her son’s marriage. When Landon suddenly brought a woman and introduced her as his wife after leaving home for two months, the shock she received was tremendous.
Of course, Patricia tried to convince Landon to annul his marriage with Lucy, telling him Yvonne would be extremely sad and wouldn’t ever forgive him, but her son was relentless.
What frustrated her the most was that he chose a total nobody to be his bride! Lucy couldn’t even compare to Yvonne’s toes, much less her outstanding son. How could she possibly accept her?!
"Later, I’ll go to the bank and get some cash." Patricia finally concluded. She had enough of her son’s marriage. It was time for her to intervene and have him marry Yvonne!
Emma nodded with some relief. Thankfully, her mother didn’t object to her idea. But then, she suddenly thought of something.
"Wait, mother. Have you heard of the things going around in the news last night?"
"What news?" Patricia hasn’t had the time to look at anything else. She was preoccupied with taking care of Yvonne and making sure her son’s future parents-in-law wouldn’t get angry at him for leaving their daughter alone at the hospital.
"Well, it’s just that people are saying that brother’s marriage isn’t real." Emma stared at her mother. "Do you think it’s true?"
Emma had some hope the rumors were real. Then, it would be easier to throw Lucy out of the way! Her friends always made fun of her whenever they asked about her brother’s wife, and she hated it. They knew Landon married a commoner, and that has been a stain on Emma’s reputation.
Patricia was surprised at first when she heard it, but she quickly shook her head.
"I checked your brother’s marriage certificate when he first brought Lucy. The document is real."
...
Landon drove his car early to the hospital.
As soon as he arrived, he hurriedly went to Yvonne’s room just in time for her mother to come out of the room.
Mrs. Leblanc showed surprise in her face, not expecting Landon to stand before her. He suddenly left last night and didn’t even tell them anything! And when Yvonne collapsed, they thought he would rush to the hospital, but Landon didn’t.
Now, seeing him looking like he hadn’t taken sleep, Mrs. Leblanc was sure what his mother said was true. Landon had to leave without notice because there was an urgent matter in his company. He must have hurried to the hospital after finishing his work.
Although she disapproved of her future son-in-law being a workaholic, Mrs. Leblanc was relieved that if Yvonne married him, her daughter wouldn’t have anything to worry about!
Mrs. Leblanc, however, forgot one thing.
Landon was not yet married to her daughter!
And there might never be a chance of that happening.
"Landon, you’re here!" Mrs. Leblanc beamed at him. "You’re just in time. I was just about to wake Yvonne!"
Her voice was strangely loud, especially in the VIP area.
Landon spared her a glance before he trudged forward.
Mrs. Leblanc hurried after him.
Inside the room, Yvonne panicked. She wasn’t asleep like what her mother had told Landon. She’d been awake an hour ago and just finished her breakfast.
After Landon disappeared last night, she had been worried he had seen through her lies. After entering the doctor’s office, the doctor told her she had a full recovery. There was no lingering trauma in her body, and she could be discharged last night.
But how could Yvonne go home? She still has to make her look miserable and pitiful in front of Landon so he would feel reluctant to leave her! Most of all, she didn’t want him to go back to his wife!
And so she faked falling unconscious last night, hoping Landon would return to her side.
Who knew even after waiting for hours and hours, Landon didn’t come to see her?
Fortunately, she could let go of her worries.
Landon is here to see her!
Yvonne dove underneath the blanket and shut her eyes tightly. She turned her back to the door so it wouldn’t be obvious she was awake.
The door opened and her heart raced as she listened to Landon’s footsteps.
She knew he couldn’t bear to hear her being hurt. Landon still loved her!
Yvonne was certain he wouldn’t be able to endure it and beg for her forgiveness! Hmph!
However, contrary to her imagination, Landon only took two steps into the room before he stopped.
Then he turned to Mrs. Leblanc and asked, "Where’s Uncle Gilbert?"
"My husband?"
Then he turned to Mrs. Leblanc and inquired, "Where’s Uncle Gilbert?"
"My husband?" Mrs. Leblanc responded, surprised by the question. "He just left."
Without another word, Landon turned around and stepped out of the room.
"Wait!" Mrs. Leblanc called out urgently, grabbing his arm.
Landon glanced down at the hand gripping him, and for a brief moment, Mrs. Leblanc felt a shiver run down her spine.
She quickly released his arm as though she’d touched something hot.
"Aren’t you here for my daughter?" Mrs. Leblanc asked with a frown. "Wait here. I’ll wake her."
She was about to head to the room when Landon’s voice stopped her.
"There’s no need for that. I’m not here for her."
His tone was sharp and cold, a stark contrast to the way he’d ever spoken to her in the past.
