Chapter 93: REVELATIONS AND PLOTS

Gabrielle drew closer to Fay, and pulled her into a hug. She felt the coldness, and stillness of her body, and it pained her deep in her core.

Drawing warmth from every part of her body that presented one, she offered it to her in the form of a tight hug.

She didn’t let go until she felt some life in her again.

"I’m so sorry," she said, when she finally pulled her away.

"For– for what?" Fay asked, still a little too rattled to speak concisely.

"For Ace. He’s a lot of things, but I never thought he’d hurt you this way. I’m in no way condoning his actions, or making excuses for his wrongdoing. I’ll even understand if you want to leave. I personally could never condone a cheating partner."

It hurt her to speak this way about her son, but she couldn’t help it. She loved Fay. Adored her so much, because she mirrored her in many ways.

She also knew that Ace needed to learn that there were consequences to every action. He wasn’t some sort of god above being punished.

"I just need to lay down for a bit," she said after a brief silence passed between them.

"I understand. I’ll let you be. I also have to return home to my children. Please call me if you need to talk to someone?"

"Thank you," Fay said, surprising her by moving in for another hug.

She wrapped a tight hand around her body, giving her all the love she needed.

When they separated, she placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, then swiftly turned around and exited the room.

She stepped out into the scorching sun, and found Cam waiting to take her home.

He bowed, and opened the car door for her. As she entered into the car, she caught sight of Marilyn, and Alice approaching her.

She whined down so she could briefly speak to them.

"You’re leaving already, Ma’am?" Marilyn asked.

"I am. But I want to beg the both of you for something really important."

"Go on, ma’am," Alice encouraged with a nod of her head.

"Allow Fay rest. She has so much to think about. I know you feel the need to take care of her, but trust me, she needs to be alone with her thoughts for at least a few hours. Do you think you can do that?"

"We will," Marilyn said with a confident nod.

"Good," she reached into her purse, and pulled out a couple of hundred dollar bills. "Thank you for all that you do," she said, handing it over to them.

It was customary of her to give them money for themselves and the staff whenever she visited. Rejecting that money was basically an insult to her.

"Thank you, ma’am Gabrielle," Alice said.

They waved her goodbye as the car drove out of the gate and she disappeared out of sight.

Gabrielle sat with her thoughts throughout the drive.

But when the car stopped at the Atticus mansion, and she stepped out of it, it was just one conviction that formed in her head - Ace needed to learn consequences, and very fast.

She thanked Cam with a couple of extra bills, and proceeded into the house.

Aside from the staff by the door that greeted her, the house was unusually quiet. It seemed like most of the family members that came for the dinner had left already.

By her calculations, Celine would be beside her brother in the hospital. After all, they were birds of the same feathers. That gave her the opportunity to speak with the matriarch alone.

Grabbing her phone from her purse, she handed the bag to the first staff she saw.

"Take that to my room please," she ordered politely.

She continued ahead to the matriarchs room. On getting there, she placed a gentle knock on her door.

Knowing how she operated, she wouldn’t step foot in that hospital until she was done with her investigations, and discovered that the accused was either innocent or guilty.

At least no one could say she wasn’t fair in her judgements. Except for the rare times she was bluntly biased.

"Come in, Gabrielle," she heard her raspy voice call after the second knock.

It wasn’t because she had some sort of secret camera showing her to anyone in front of her door.

No.

They had simply built that kind of relationship over the years. They knew each other’s knocking pattern.

She turned the doorknob, and opened the door.

Stepping into the room, she found the matriarch on her bed, her eyes sad as she viewed something on the big screen.

Out of curiosity, Gabrielle’s eyes went to the screen.

She breathed aloud when she saw the headlines.

Apparently, various billboards had appeared across the city. Billboards with videos of Ace beating the matriarch’s last child.

"Celine," she blurted out between her teeth.

"Calm down, Gabrielle. You can’t go off right now."

"How much more can I take? She’s out to completely annihilate my son’s character. How much more can I take, Mama!" Her blood boiled as she regarded the older woman who was the sole reason she had turned the other cheeks all these years.

Why? Simply because she had reassured her that no one would take her son’s rightful inheritance. Not while she was still alive.

In order not to complicate things, she had sat back idly and mum, watching Celine do everything in her power to destroy her child.

Now Ace wasn’t faultless. He had his flaws, and a lot of them. But he never actively went out of his way to ruin people not trying to ruin him.

And even when he did, he never played this dirty.

"Come sit beside me, Gabby. I understand you perfectly."

She took a deep breath, and proceeded forward, despite her burning fury.

She sat beside the older woman, and waited to hear what she had to say.

"I know I’ve done a piss poor job raising most of my kids. It’s a miracle a good number of them actually turned out good. But you have to believe me when I say that I’m not blind to everything happening," she paused to clear her throat. "It may seem like I’m taking my time to act, but I’ve promised you before, but I’ll reiterate it just for posterity sake. Gabby, justice will prevail. All the wrong you’ve been meted will not go unpunished. I promise you," she said, grabbing her hands.

"I understand," she mumbled, as a tear rolled down her eyes. "It just hurts to see so much happening, yet not being able to interfere. It hurts so much."

"I know, my darling," she stroked her hand. "Tell me, what happened at Ace’s house? Did they find Fay?"

She sighed, only just remembering Celine was one half of her problem.

Ace wasn’t helping himself, either.

"Ace did. Two of the doctors from the hospital Fay was admitted in before, found her by the roadside. Thankful they did when they did. But that’s not even the crux of the matter, right now."

"Really? What is? Does Ace know that we know his marriage isn’t real?" She asked in a panic stricken voice.

"No, not that. Reign came into the house today. Ace was with her last night at the lake house. She alleged that they slept together, and that she possibly could be carrying his child. Of course, we wouldn’t know until a few weeks later," she sighed in exasperation.

"Wow," the matriarch whistled. "How could Ace do that? I thought he was over, Reign?"

"I thought so too. Anyway, the details are not very clear, but Fay is clearly upset. I’m afraid that she probably won’t be taking up your offer."

"Don’t say that. There’s an elastic limit for pain, Gabby. With time, she’ll see that she needs power if she’s going to survive in this cold world Ace has thrust her into. She will accept the offer. I believe that with all my heart."

"I wish I was as confident as you are. I feel so sorry for Fay. She’s just the sweetest most precious angel. I don’t know why life deals the toughest hands to the humblest people. It’s not fair."

"Nothing’s fair, my dear. If it were, your husband wouldn’t be dead. We wouldn’t be secretly investigating his twin sister for the possible murder of her brother," she shuddered as the words left her mouth.

It was perhaps the saddest thing she had ever done in her life. But Celine had left her with no choice. She wished she would be wrong when the investigation was finally over.

However, she wasn’t counting on it.

"Thank you for not giving up on Ace. I noticed you didn’t go to the hospital."

"How can I? If my son has done what he has been accused of doing, which judging from the CCTV I found of Fay running through the halls, he may just have done, there’s nothing I can do but let justice prevail. Like I said, I’m fully aware that I didn’t raise all wonderful children. It’s the curse of having this much wealth, I guess." She shrugged her shriveled shoulders.

"But together, we’ll make a change," Gabrielle said, with a very clear and strong conviction in her voice.
