Chapter 90: LINGERING LOOKS

Fay, freshened up, and wore the sweats and hoodie Ace provided for her.

As she snuggled into the clothes which looked massive for her, she smiled at her reflection in the mirror.

Gabrielle was yet to return. She had enough time to lift the hem of the hoodie and began to sniff.

His scent was so masculine and head turning. Giggling, she returned to the bed, and just sat doing nothing but inhaling his scent at intervals.

Few minutes later, the door finally opened and Gabrielle stepped into the room.

"Hey, Fay, sorry for the delay. I had to add another dish, but don’t worry too much. The food is ready now. Are you ready to eat?"

As if on cue, her stomach rumbled. Her eyes bulged, as she turned her face away in embarrassment.

Gabriel chuckled. "Oh dear Fay, you have nothing to be embarrassed about. Come with me please?" She pleaded.

Slowly, Fay’s head turned towards her as she rose to her feet. "I can’t deny I’m really hungry," she said in a cute tone that had Gabrielle’s smile deepening.

"Excellent!"

Gabrielle linked her arm into hers, and pulled her along as she walked out of the room, straight to the dining room.

"Family should always eat together in the dining room," she explained, as they stepped into it.

Fay’s lips parted to respond when her eyes locked on Ace. It widened, her lips instantly pursing.

He whipped his head behind on hearing their footsteps approach. His eyes trailed lazily from her head to her toes. Internally, he smiled.

She had really worn the clothes he lended her. Not to brag, but he thought she looked better in his, than the doctors.

"That was the point? To claim her as yours?" A voice in his head quizzed.

"Well she’s mine— At least until one year is exhausted," he replied in his head, saving himself from deep self reflection at the nick of time.

Gabrielle looked at Fay when she noticed the girl’s feet weren’t moving anymore. Following her gaze, she saw it was on her son who was also looking at her.

She smiled knowingly, carefully unlinking her hand.

But the movement propelled Fay out of her imagination, which heavily consisted of lips on lips. One lips happened to be hers, and the other—- she blinked, and hurried towards a seat.

The corner of Ace’s lip twitched, as he straightened his posture.

"You really don’t stop until you get what you want, do you?" He questioned his mother as she sat down.

"What have I done this time, Ace?" She asked innocently.

He rolled his eyes. She had practically forced him to come down to the dining and eat. His head still hurt a little from the drunken night he had that ended up in a disastrous decision he was going to regret everyday of his life.

However, she made it better. Fay made it better. Just the thought that she was safe home again, made him relieved.

"Nothing," he said, and she giggled as she stared at Fay.

"Careful not to give birth to a male child, Fay. See how they blame you for everything wrong with the world?" She teased.

Fay shifted uncomfortably. Gabrielle had been heavily, but at the same time, subtly hinting on their romantic life.

The other time was about her sleeping in Ace’s room. Now it was the pregnancy talk. She began to fear her face would slip up and reveal the truth about her relationship with Ace.

She could tell the lovely woman liked and welcomed her. She didn’t ever want to disappoint her.

"Let’s eat," Ace said, changing the topic. He could sense the awkwardness trying to fill the air.

There was absolutely no room for it. He wanted Fay to eat whilst feeling comfortable..

Fay offered to serve the food since she practically couldn’t do anything else. Gabrielle told her to sit. She cooked, she’d serve.

Scraping sounds of fork on plate filled the room as they began to eat.

From the corner of his lashes, Ace observed Fay, solely to ensure she liked the food, and was eating.

He had no doubt about the former. His mum was an excellent cook. She had made sure he learnt to cook like a pro too. If Fay ever wanted to learn, he would be glad to—

"Again, what are you doing man?" His head almost exploded at that question.

In the beginning, he was very clear about the situation between them. It was strictly business. A transactional affair. It seemed like as the days passed, he was forgetting..

What did he care if she didn’t know how to cook? That would be something she could figure out with her life partner- something he wasn’t.

"You’re not eating," he heard a small voice say.

At first he thought it was his mother. She was the one that worried about him that way.

But when he fully lifted his head, he saw Fay looking at him.

He cleared his throat, pleased to death by her concern, but too proud to let it show. "I am. See?" He lifted a fork full of food, and shoved it into his mouth..

Fay smiled so wide, her dimples popped. His eyes were drawn to it, marveling at how stunning one could be.

All the features people went under the knife to get, she was born with for free.

Gabrielle studied them as their eyes locked. She hadn’t stopped smiling since they began eating.

The two of them gave her enough reason not to.

If only things could continue this way. She would leave the happiest of mother’s on earth.

"Fay, have you ever thought of what you’d like to do for work? I mean it’s okay if you want to be a housewife, but you’re young. You may have certain ambitions you’d love to accomplish, right?" She asked out of the blue.

Fay, absolutely stunned at that question, began to cough as the food in her mouth went down the wrong pipe.

Ace was instantly up with a glass of water in his hand. He went behind her, handed her the water, and began to massage her shoulders as she drank.

"I’m so sorry, Fay. I didn’t mean to cause this," Gabrielle said, beating herself up.

Fay’s eyes reddened, but the coughing stopped.

"Are you okay now?" Ace asked, concern, creasing his forehead.

She waited a few seconds before responding. "I’m okay," she said.

"Are you sure?" He pressed.

"Yeah. I am."

He nodded, and returned to his seat.

"I’m really sorry Fay."

"It’s nothing, ma’am. I was just startled by that question. Not many people care enough to ask something like that."

Ace stiffened at those words. Was she referring to him? In truth, he had never bothered to ask what she’d love to do, simply because he didn’t think it was in his place to ask.

Okay, maybe he was giving excuses for himself. The truth was he hadn’t cared to ask..

She had a roof over her head, staff at her beck and call, and a black card with unlimited spending potential. What else could she possibly want to do?

Doing a little introspection now made him realize how sexist he sounded. Of course she had dreams, and aspirations too.

"Damn Ace," he thought.

"Really? I believe everyone should be asked about their goals. It makes for a good conversation," Gabrielle paused to take a sip out of her glass before she continued eating. "For example, I love shopping, so I monetized it," she said.

"You monetized shopping?" Fay’s eyes bulged. "I didn’t know one could do that."

"In this digital age my dear, one can do anything. Your husband is very smart when it comes to spotting people’s niche and helping them monetize it," she turned to Ace. "I hope you know this means I expect you to help your wife reach her full potential?"

"Sure mum." He nodded. If it was something he could do in a year, that would be interesting to see.

"Sure mum," she mimicked him. "Look at him so casual about things. Your dad sought out every moment to make everything about me. Give him a chance to talk, and he’ll talk about me for an hour straight. You better fix-up and become a better lover," she hissed, and rolled her eyes.

As she returned her attention to Fay, she threw her a wink. Fay couldn’t help but to giggle. She thought Gabrielle was always so composed, and mostly kept to herself..

Well, she was beginning to see a different side to the woman. A side she loved just as much as the reserved side.

"I see this is a tag team operation going on right now. Well," the chair scraped as he rose to his feet. "I want to thank you for the meal, it was delicious. I’d love to go catch up on some work now."

"Okay. Fay will bring you some of my delicious muffins later. If you don’t see me by the time you’re done, I’ve returned home to my children."

"And what am I?" He lifted a brow.

"Ace? I mean you hate when anyone comes to visit you. I’m beginning to think I’ve overstayed my welcome." She shrugged.

"Why would you even think that?"

"Nothing." She pouted.

Fay couldn’t help her smile, as her eyes traveled back and forth between mother and son.

She loved how patient Ace was with her, wishing he would be the same if she ever acted this dramatic around him.

"Stay if you want to—"

"No, I’ll leave and go check on the muffins in the oven. They should be ready now." She rose to her feet, and exited the room, a mischievous smile, adorning her face.
