Chapter 236: NOTHING BREAKS LIKE A HEART
"I wondered how long you’d pretend for. I see it didn’t last long," Ace said when he saw King who had just been bedridden in front of him.
"Dad, why are you here?" Reign asked, rising to her feet.
"To bring you back home, and remind you of who you are," he replied.
"But dad—"
"No buts!" He screamed. "Enough of this madness, Reign! What is it about this man that has you ready to sacrifice your own life? Can’t you see he’s not worth it?" he screamed some sense into her.
"Listen to your father, and leave me alone. Just let me go. I’m not even going to try to get back at you for all the lies, and manipulation you engineered. I just want to be left alone, Reign," Ace said.
"Shut up!" King countered. "I didn’t give you permission to speak. I’ve watched you hurt my daughter all these years, and did nothing about it. Everything you know about business, I’m certain I taught you a good percent of. Yet you stab me in the back the second you feel on top of the world? Where did that leave you? Celine is president of Spades, and you? You have nothing left, Ace. Absolutely nothing!"
"I agree," Ace nodded. "I have nothing, and that’s why I want your daughter out of my life. So please take her away."
"No, Ace! I said no! I’m not leaving. I already told you I’d die first before I let you slip away from me again," she cried out.
"Enough Reign! Just stop it. I already told you he’s not worthy of you. You’re an heiress. In what, a few months? I’d be governor. I’ll beat Celine’s husband, and become governor. You’ll be the daughter of the governor. You’ll also have the King’s empire. Everything would belong to you. What do you need him for?" Kings asked, heavily confused by her insistence to stand by Ace.
"Lo-ve father!" Her voice broke. "I love him, don’t you understand? I want to be with him. Everytime I think of him with another woman, it feels like my heart is about to rip apart. I can’t live without him, father. I just can’t." She clasped her chest, as she wailed uncontrollably.
Ace was not moved by her tears. He wasn’t moved by whatever act they chose to portray.
All he wanted was to remove himself from their situation, and return home.
He wanted to prepare for his daughter’s birthday, and learn to live with the consequences of his actions..
That was all he wanted. And by God, he was going to get it.
He turned around, ready to walk away, but Reign grabbed him again.
"You’re embarrassing me, Reign. Let him go this instant!" King warned.
"Never! I’ll never let him go. I don’t care what anyone says, Ace belongs to me. He belonged to me from the very first day we met. No one else will have him if I can’t have him."
"Reign, just fucking let me go!" He pushed, but she remained adamant.
With every strength she could muster, she held onto him.
He couldn’t move without hurting her. He didn’t want to hurt her.
There was enough hurt to recover from, and it would probably take a lifetime to do so.
Her punishment was simple. She would watch him move on with his life, never to be hers.
That was what he decided was the best approach. If only she would just let go.
"Dad, please make him stay. Tell him about your health," she cried, snort falling from her nose.
"I know your father is fine, Reign. He just said he’s contesting for governorship. By the way, if I were you, I wouldn’t bother. There’s no way in hell you beat David Duke," Ace directed at him.
The dismissiveness, and downright condescension in his voice, boiled King’s blood.
He was furious beyond reasoning. All he wanted was to clip the wings he had watched sprout, and done nothing about it before.
"You sure have a lot of nerve to talk to me about losing. I’m not you, ace. I never lose. Not to anyone. I’ll be damned if I lose to a bastard that can’t even get his wife to divorce him. Now Reign, I’m done playing nice. You either leave with me peacefully, or I’ll force your have," he warned.
"You heard your father. Let me go, and go away with him. We’re done, Reign. I never loved you, and I sure as hell will never love you."
"No," she shook her head. "I’d die first. Death would do us apart, Ace. That’s the only way," she said.
"As you wish, my darling," Mr King said.
She whipped her head behind when he said that, and gasped when she saw him pull out a gun from his coat.
"What are you doing, father?!" She screamed, and her hold on Ace collapsed.
Ace turned when he heard the fear in her voice, just to see a gun pointed at him.
"You really want to add to your many crimes, don’t you?" He asked, surprisingly calmer than he expected to be.
"Killing you would solve all my problems. I’ll get my daughter back, I’ll defeat David Duke, life would generally become better. So give me one reason why I shouldn’t do it right now?"
"Because I love him, father. I beg of you, don’t do this. He will love me. I know Ace..I just need to explain things to him, and I swear we’ll be back on track. It’s all the witches’ fault. That bitch! That redhead demon! If there’s anyone that needs to be killed, it’s that whore and her gremlin of a daughter!"
Ace couldn’t hold back anymore. It was one thing to come for him, and an entirely different thing to come for Fay, and most especially, his daughter.
His hand moved faster than his head, as he smacked her across the face.
"Don’t you ever talk about my daughter like that, you bitch!" He screamed in her face.
Reign held the spot he had slapped, as she cried.
"You’re just mad," she said, still in denial. "You’re angry, and that’s alright. Can’t you see? Fay has gotten into your head. It’s the exact same thing she did four years ago. She’s just a whore, and that child is not yours!"
He lifted his hand to smack her again, when a shot blasted their way.
"Ace!!" Reign bellowed into the heavens, as he staggered back, and fell to the ground.
He narrowly escaped falling over the cliff, but his head wasn’t so lucky, as it landed directly on a large stone.
At the same time, Fay jerked, and Dream jolted from her sleep.
Fay, who was holding her daughter as she slept, turned her around to face her.
"What is it, Dream?" She asked.
"It’s Daddy. Call Daddy!" The little girl screamed.
"Hey Dream, it’s a nightmare. You’re fine. Everything is fine," she tried to calm her down, but she just kept on screaming for her father.
Seth dashed into the room, and saw a confused Fay trying to calm her hysterical daughter.
"What is it? I heard her voice all the way from my room!" He queried for an explanation.
"I don’t understand either. She jolted from her sleep, and began screaming for her father."
"Well, call her father so the girl can speak to him," Seth said.
Fay had begun to move already, when she remembered just a few hours back, she had driven out of Ace’s compound, when she read the note that explicitly stated he was leaving.
Landon had not been able to get a hold of him through his cellphone. He definitely wasn’t going to answer her call either.
"Well, what are you waiting for, Fay? Look at your daughter, she’s scared to death! If you’re not going to do it, I will!"
He turned around, and ran out of the room.
"Dream, please listen to me. It’s late into the night, and we can’t reach your father right now," she tried to explain.
"Why?!" The little girl screamed, as her entire body trembled.
Fay had to think fast. She had to come up with an excuse that would possibly calm the little girl.
She couldn’t tell her that her father had practically run away. It would break her heart.
"Mummy!" Dream called.
Fay looked around, confused to her core. She prayed for a miracle, but no inspiration was forthcoming.
"Look Dream, it’s past midnight already. It’s your birthday. Let’s forget about whatever dream you had, and celebrate before dawn," she said, trying with something that could possibly appeal to her.
"No!" She screamed. "I saw him, and he wasn’t fine. I want to speak to him, mummy. I just want to speak to him," she cried.
Seth returned to the room, and brought the phone to Dream’s ears.
"Is that daddy?" She asked.
Fay looked at him questioningly, but he avoided her gaze.
"Hello, Dream," she heard a familiar voice say, but it wasn’t her daddy’s.
"You’re not my daddy!" She said.
"I’m not, but it’s uncle Landon. Remember? Your daddy is in an important meeting right now, so he can’t pick up. He’ll call you when he’s done, okay?"
"Are you sure? Is daddy really around you?" She asked.
"He definitely is, princess."
"Alright. Tell him I love him," she said.
"I will."
"Bye uncle Landon."
"Bye baby."
Fay grabbed her chest, and cursed the day she met Ace Atticus.
