THE BILLIONAIRE'S CRYBABY -
Chapter 161: IN SEARCH OF THE TRUTH
Chapter 161: IN SEARCH OF THE TRUTH
Ace drove in through the back of a restaurant he had carefully selected on his mission to find out the truth.
Through the back doors, he was directed into the private room he had asked to be preserved for him.
He entered the room and found Fay’s aunt seated in wait for him.
According to the staff assigned to meet all of her needs before he arrived, the woman had already eaten two rounds worth of food.
She wasn’t alone, he noticed as he entered the room.
There were two girls beside her. Not much younger than Fay.
"Mr Ace," she jumped to her feet and urged the girls to do the same when she saw him enter the room. "You’re finally here."
He acknowledged them with a nod, and sat on the seat reserved for him.
"He’s so cute!" Both girls fawned, a little less discreetly for his liking.
"Girls, behave." Lynne reproached them, but the smile on her face didn’t seem like she minded their actions.
"I thought we would be meeting alone?" Ace finally said, after accessing the situation.
"You said so Mr Ace. But I thought if my girls came with me, you’d see more proof to every truth I’m about to tell you today."
He nodded. It seemed like a plausible reason. After all, he was in search of the truth.
His grandmother’s reaction had pushed him to follow through with this meeting.
If she had done a better job at convincing him everything Reign found out was pure hogwash, he wouldn’t have been here right now.
The contrary had been the case. He walked into her office, and the first person he saw was Fay.
As if that was not enough, his grandmother threw everything to his face.
He was angry. He couldn’t explain with words just how angry he was. But he kept it in. For the truth, he decided to toss his anger aside.
"Alright. Let’s get into it. But before that, have you eaten to your satisfaction?"
"Thank you so much for your generosity. We’ve eaten enough."
He watched as her daughter’s faces changed. But one look from their mother set them straight.
He was beginning to think she wasn’t half as bad as what was painted. She looked like she knew how to discipline and keep her children in check.
"I want to know the truth about Fay."
"Where do I start from?" She said, adorning a sad face.
Stretching her hand to the table, she picked up the bottle of water and drank from it.
"I needed to wet my throat to be able to begin."
"Take your time mum. It’s a lot."
His eyes went to the girl that just spoke. She looked nothing like her mother which made him believe she was all her father.
The woman herself had a little trace of red hair, but hers wasn’t as vivid as Fay’s.
"Anyway, Fay is a terrible liar. I blame myself because I should have taught her better. Unfortunately, she’s my first child. I was too young myself when I gave birth to her. I didn’t know what a narcissist her father would be. I raised her alone until I met the girl’s father. He did eventually leave too, but at least, we were able to raise these two better."
She had corroborated Reign’s claim of her being Fay’s mother.
Fay repeatedly said she couldn’t remember her parents.
He remembered searching for a list of therapists and psychologists she could go to, just to help with her head.
Thinking about how he had been easily deceived, made him rage within.
"So why did she lie about you being her aunt? And why did you play the part?"
"Because everything I did, I was threatened to do. It was like a script was fed to me. The man that came to me said if I don’t play my part, my children would be in trouble."
Ace waited a few minutes for what she had just said to digest in his head. He stroked his forehead as he thought about her claims.
There were a lot of things that still made no sense. But since he was in the path of truth, he wanted to see this through to the end.
"Did you know Fay was working with my grandmother?"
"What?! I didn’t know that!" A resounding shock covered her face. "I knew she had to have some sort of connection. I didn’t know it was your grandmother."
"You said a man approached you. Can you describe this man?"
"Sure!" She nodded enthusiastically. "He was short, and bald. He talked really fast too."
She was barely halfway into her description when an image of Grant popped up in Ace’s head.
If all of these happened to be true, there would be a lot of bridges that would be burnt.
His grandmother, his personal assistant, and the woman he thought was about to change his life for the better.
Even in that moment, his heart felt a pang of hurt whenever he thought of her.
He didn’t think it would hurt him this much.
"Did he tell you who he was?"
"No. I wondered too. Because I knew that Fay didn’t have any money. It all made sense when I found out she was married to you. Around that time–" she choked, making her pause.
"Mum, it’s okay," one of the daughters said, handing her a tissue from the box on the table.
As they comforted her, Ace’s wandering mind went round the room.
Its walls were filled with ancient Chinese symbols.
Save for the table and chairs they occupied, the only other thing in the room was the chandelier which doubled as a ceiling fan.
It was minimalist to the maximum, but had such an alluring taste to it.
Perhaps, because it made you focus more on whoever you’re dining with, rather than being distracted by every other thing around.
Yet, he was still distracted. No matter how much he tried, he just couldn’t see Fay as anything other than good.
Sure his anger intermittently, had made him lash out, but it was all an act.
In his heart, he couldn’t see her as anything other than the amazing woman she was.
"My second eldest was sick," she continued, and her voice dragged him out of his mind.
"She needed money. The man had said if I did everything he asked me to do, he’d send me some money. I didn’t have a choice, so I agreed to his plan. But my daughter fell really sick, and I still didn’t receive any money."
How entitled! He thought in his mind.
There was no reason why girls their age shouldn’t be working. And if they were working, they should definitely have savings for the rainy day.
How come they didn’t even have enough to secure some health?
This was the reason he still had doubts. Their stories weren’t adding up.
"We had just started renovation for our house, because it was collapsing. Since my daughter’s live with me, they all contributed to the renovations, rendering them broke. So when she fell sick, we didn’t have a dime to fall back to."
He hated that she had answered the question, and doubt he had in his mind. Because he wanted more than anything to hold on to the idea of Fay being without fault.
Faced with another notion, he didn’t think he could stop himself from crashing out.
"That was why I came to find Fay that day. I know I did too much, but I was frustrated. I thought the truth would finally come out. But the thing with Fay is that she’s an expert in playing the victim. Your staff didn’t understand. They thought I was bullying her, hence the commotion."
"Hmmm," he replied, stroking his chin.
"I ended up sleeping in the cell. My daughter had to borrow to take her sister to the hospital. It was such a difficult period." She stopped, and burst into tears.
Ace felt guilty. He had been the driver of her time in the police station. He thought he was saving an innocent soul like Fay’s, from the devil which was her Aunt.
It was beginning to look otherwise.
Reaching into his shirt pocket, he pulled out a handkerchief, and handed it over.
Bowing her head in gratitude, Lynne accepted the handkerchief.
"You’re such a nice man, Mr Ace. Thank you for being so kind to my mother," the daughter without any trace of red hair said.
"It’s nothing." He dismissed with a wave of his hand.
Lynne put herself together, before lifting her head.
"One last thing, Fay is not as innocent as she projects. I wasn’t lying about her seduction. I know it’s difficult to believe a minor can do that, but I have proof of it."
"You have proof she seduced your husband?"
"Yes, her stepfather."
His heart skipped a beat. "Surely, you’re lying?"
"No. The proof is here with me."
His heart began to pound against his chest, as her hands went into her bag.
