Chapter 58: Chapter 058: Locked in the Snake House

"...Sixth Master, please let Mai go. She’s terrified of snakes. She’s been locked up for an entire day without eating; we don’t know how she’s doing... What if she gets traumatized? What will we do then?"

"..."

"Sixth Master, if you truly care for Mai, please release her. Mai is stubborn and won’t yield to pressure. Treating her like this will only make her distance herself from you..."

Adrian Desmond disliked her last sentence. "Whether she loves me or hates me," he said coldly, "I don’t care now!"

"Sixth Master..." Selena Robertson watched Adrian Desmond walk away, but she still hadn’t managed to persuade him to release Sienna Johnson.

Bella Ford came out and saw Selena Robertson "pestering" Adrian Desmond. Mistaking Selena for Mai, Bella looked her up and down and clicked her tongue. "She’s quite attractive, but nowhere near as good-looking as my cousin..."

Selena knew this woman was Melanie Carpenter’s cousin, so she greeted her respectfully, "Hello, Miss Ford."

Nearby, Abigail Ford, who was taller than Selena and wore ten-centimeter high heels, stood imposingly.

It was Bella Ford who continued, her voice sharp, "My Sixth Brother has had countless women before, and he’s seen many like you. Don’t think that just because he dotes on you, you can be arrogant and forget your place."

Selena was dumbfounded by Bella Ford’s tirade. "I think you’ve misunderstood."

"Sixth Brother isn’t around, so you don’t need to put on that pitiful act for me!" Bella Ford snapped. "You women are full of tricks. I’m warning you, stay away from my Sixth Brother!"

Selena finally understood. "You think I’m Mai, don’t you?"

"You’re not Mai?" Bella Ford asked, taken aback.

"I’m Selena Robertson!"

With that, Selena turned and left the bewildered Bella Ford.

Bella Ford murmured to herself, "Not that woman?"

「On the third day of Sienna Johnson’s captivity, Melanie Carpenter became aware of Mai’s predicament. She took matters into her own hands and had Sienna Johnson released.」

Sienna was carried out. Selena sobbed loudly when she saw Sienna, barely alive. "Mai..."

Mai’s body was covered in injuries—snake bites. Sienna herself seemed vacant, her eyes empty, as if staring at something yet seeing nothing at all. Not only Selena, but others could also tell that something was mentally wrong with Sienna.

However, it wasn’t surprising. A woman locked in a room full of snakes for three days and nights—it would be strange if she didn’t go mad.

"Quick, quick... call the doctor!"

Sienna’s condition shocked Melanie. Clutching her chest, she rushed to have someone call a doctor. As Little Ninth was unavailable, Dr. Hyder treated Sienna.

Selena stayed by Sienna’s side, asking anxiously, "Dr. Hyder, how is Mai? Is she okay? Please, you have to cure her."

Dr. Hyder looked at Sienna and shook his head. "They’re just superficial injuries. She’ll recover with proper care. However, her mental state is extremely poor. It’s best to find a neurologist to see her." Dr. Hyder didn’t say it explicitly, but Sienna’s mental health was definitely compromised; the only question was to what extent.

Not only Selena but everyone else also noticed something was wrong with Sienna. She seemed like a puppet whose strings had been cut, a hollow shell with no soul, unresponsive to anything around her.

"Mai, it’s Kiki... Please look at me... Mai, don’t be afraid, it’s over now..." Selena held Sienna’s cold hand, calling her name over and over into her ear, but Sienna showed no reaction.

Sienna was taken to Kiki’s room, and Kiki took care of her the entire time. Melanie also came to visit Sienna.

"Dr. Hyder, will she be okay?" Melanie asked with concern.

"Her physical injuries aren’t severe," Dr. Hyder said, looking at Sienna’s state and shaking his head. "It’s just... I’m afraid there might be issues with her mental well-being. You should ask Sixth Master to find a neurologist for her."

"Sixth Brother went too far this time," Melanie said, looking at Sienna.

Bella Ford disagreed. "Cousin, don’t meddle. It’s her own fault for provoking Sixth Brother."

Melanie looked at Sienna, sighed, and said, "I’ll go talk to Sixth Brother and ask him to get a neurologist."

"Cousin!"

Watching her meddlesome cousin leave, Bella stomped her foot and chased after her.

Selena’s eyes were swollen like walnuts from crying, tears still streaming down her face. If this were before, Sienna would have teased her for crying so much, but the current Sienna just stared blankly, unresponsive to the world.

"Mai, please don’t be like this... I’m so worried about you..."

「In the study, the room was filled with cigarette smoke.」

Adrian Desmond smoked fiercely, finishing a cigarette in just a couple of puffs. Smoke billowed from his nostrils, lending him an air of utter desolation.

"...Miss Carpenter found out and insisted on releasing Mai. Dr. Hyder is currently treating her," Walter Klein reported.

"Mmm."

"Do you want to go see her?"

"She definitely doesn’t want to see me right now. Why should I go and be an annoyance!" All the cigarettes were gone. Adrian Desmond asked Walter Klein, "Do you have any cigarettes?"

"I don’t smoke."

"Are you even a man?"

Just then, Melanie Carpenter knocked on the study door and entered. The moment she opened it, the thick smoke in the room made her choke and cough.

"Why is there so much smoke?" Bella Ford, who had followed, also coughed.

Walter Klein went to turn on the indoor ventilation and then opened the windows. As a large gust of sea breeze blew in, the smoke in the study quickly dissipated.

Adrian Desmond glanced at Melanie Carpenter and knew why she had come. He remained seated, neither moving nor looking at her.

Once Melanie managed to stop coughing, she walked further in. Adrian also appeared unwell.

Walter Klein pulled Bella Ford out of the study, leaving Adrian and Melanie alone. Melanie sat down in front of Adrian, studying him for a moment.

"If you really like her, why treat her like this?" she sighed.

"When people do wrong, they must be punished. Otherwise, she’ll make an even bigger mistake next time," he stated, his voice icy.

Adrian’s expression was weary, his eyes bloodshot. For the past three days, he had barely eaten, spending most of his time in the study.

"...I just went to see Mai. She’s not in a good state. She seems to have been badly frightened; she’s just staring blankly. Dr. Hyder suspects Mai might have mental problems and suggests getting a psychiatrist to examine her. Should I have someone brought here?"

The people on the island were under Adrian’s command; Melanie couldn’t order them. She had no choice but to seek Adrian’s help. Moreover, the island was quite secluded, and Adrian usually didn’t allow unauthorized people to come ashore.
