Chapter 87: Chapter 87: The New Official Takes Office
Long Fei went to the security room to take over from Zheng Dahai, who was sitting inside, smoking a cigarette and had already started packing up his things.
The two had a big argument two days ago, and it was somewhat awkward meeting again.
Zheng Dahai had thought Long Fei was definitely leaving, but in the end, it was he who was on his way out.
It really was a case of man’s plans falling short of heaven’s, who knew Bald Nie would pull such a move and let Long Fei catch a break.
But then again, if he had been there that night, chances are he would have had to submit meekly just the same.
Not everyone could confront Bald Nie’s gun with their life on the line like Long Fei did.
He stubbed out his cigarette, stood up, and with a bitter smile said to Long Fei, "Brother Long Fei, I’ve offended you in the past. You know, we are just small security guards, and can’t afford to offend anyone. Now that I’m leaving, chances are we won’t see each other again. Can you forgive me, so I can leave with peace of mind?"
As one is about to leave, their words turn kind.
Long Fei and Zheng Dahai didn’t have any significant conflicts; it was just that Zheng Dahai had initially wanted to use him to deal with Bald Nie.
It’s human nature, and it’s the same everywhere in the workplace.
Long Fei took out a cigarette and offered him one, saying, "Brother Hai, don’t worry about it, I didn’t take that issue to heart. If there’s a chance in the future, I’ll treat you to a drink!"
"Ah, ah!"
Zheng Dahai nodded repeatedly, looking much older than before.
He had guarded the gates of Lin’s Group for over a decade, dedicating his youth to this place.
Thinking about resigning, he had no idea what else he could do.
Luckily, Lin’s Group provided him with a livelihood. The warehouse position might pay less, but it was quieter than here, which was considerate enough.
Zheng Dahai and Long Fei smoked a cigarette together and went over the situation of the security team in detail.
It felt like handing over his own home, eager to explain everything inside and out.
It was clear that he was deeply invested in this place.
After checking the surveillance room and having a look at the areas the security team was responsible for on each floor, the two returned.
Back at the security room, Zheng Dahai packed up his things and waved goodbye to Long Fei.
Long Fei saw him out to the door where Zheng Dahai turned back for one last admonishment, "Brother Long Fei, Yang Huo and Steel Ring might be sly, but they are effective workers who have never been late or left early. Jobs are hard to find these days, you must keep a path open for them."
Long Fei nodded with a smile, "Don’t worry, I’ve never thought about firing them!"
"Thank you!"
Zheng Dahai nodded solemnly, bowed earnestly to Long Fei, waved his hand, and left in a taxi.
After sending him off, Long Fei turned back to look at the Lin’s Group building. Stepping back inside, he would be considered a leader then.
He had achieved his first goal of laying down roots in the city. Next, he needed to figure out how to earn more money to save up for a wife.
The daytime shift was Dong Laonian’s group; there were no major issues with this team.
After going in, Long Fei gathered them for a short meeting during lunchtime, taking the opportunity to formally get to know everyone.
New officers need to set a blaze when they take office, and while Long Fei had no intention of stirring up too much trouble, he still needed to establish some ground rules for his subordinates.
Dong Laonian’s position remained the same, still the assistant team leader.
However, Long Fei had some detailed requirements.
Those were, when standing guard outside, it couldn’t always be just the same two people.
He asked Dong Laonian for a plan, which could either involve changing the guard daily or every two hours.
Those guarding the gate and those sitting in the surveillance room needed to be rotated regularly.
They couldn’t always pick on the honest workers, leaving them with all the hard tasks.
The daytime team members all looked pleased and raised their hands in strong agreement.
Long Fei lastly warned that no matter who it was, if there were any disputes, no private brawling was allowed during work hours.
Otherwise, he would recommend that the HR department handle the matter by firing the involved party, showing no leniency.
The group had no objections; the security regulations were already clear on this.
Such actions were also aimed at protecting honest people from being bullied. Long Fei had been there for a week and knew what it was like below.
The old timers bullied the new recruits, and the hot-tempered bullied the meek.
As the boss, he couldn’t let his men feel bullied, only then could the team last.
After the meeting, a bunch of people flocked to offer him cigarettes, trying to curry favor.
Long Fei accepted them with a smile, telling them to hurry up and go eat, that from now on they were brothers and didn’t need to be so polite.
Only then did the crowd disperse, and there were two knocks at the door.
Wang Xiaoya peeked her head in, hands behind her back, and sauntered in with a smile, "Big boss, laying down so many rules on your first day, aren’t you afraid everyone will be dissatisfied with you?"
Long Fei chuckled, "This is exactly what the public wanted, they couldn’t be happier!"
"Look at you, all smug!"
Wang Xiaoya laughed and waggled her little head, "Shall we go up for lunch?"
"Sure!"
Long Fei tidied up the things on the table and followed Wang Xiaoya out.
Zhang Li seemed different today, deliberately waiting for them outside the door, and she excitedly said, "Let’s go eat together!"
Wang Xiaoya frowned, "You’re not looking for your handsome Liu Kai anymore?"
Zhang Li looked like she wanted to say more but hesitated, then cursed, "Don’t even mention him, he’s a lunatic, ignoring my WeChat messages."
Wang Xiaoya smiled and said, "Chu Feng took his position, he must be uncomfortable, give him some leeway."
"I know!"
Zhang Li sighed, holding her hand as they followed Long Fei to the elevator.
Suddenly, she asked Long Fei, "Do you want to invite Chu Feng to join us?"
Long Fei was startled for a moment, looking at her before he understood.
He was no fool and finally realized why Zhang Li was following him and Wang Xiaoya—it was for Chu Feng.
He forced a laugh and brushed it off, "Chu Feng just got promoted to manager, he’s got way more to deal with than me; I wouldn’t dare to disturb him."
"That makes sense!"
Zhang Li felt a hint of disappointment but didn’t elaborate.
The three of them went to the fifth floor, and as Long Fei appeared, the white-collar workers who recognized him turned to look at him.
There was quiet murmuring, "See that? The burly security guard really hit the jackpot. He beat up someone from the cafeteria, but saved Director Lin. Instead of getting fired, he got a promotion!"
"Look at him strutting around; even promoted, he’s still just a security guard, nothing special!"
"People like him are bound to mess up sooner or later, just watch—he won’t last a few days before he hits the road!"
Long Fei frowned; as he passed by, he was met with the sour stench of envy, jealousy, and hatred.
He was just a small security guard, not bothering anyone.
The cafeteria staff were so frightened when they saw him coming that they quickly hid.
Especially Big Head, who still had bandages on his forehead, cradling his head and squatting on the ground pleading as soon as he saw Long Fei, "Bro, I know I was wrong, why are you here again?"
Long Fei was amused by him, holding a plate and saying, "Damn it, I’m not here to hit you, can’t I just come to eat?"
Wang Xiaoya covered her mouth and laughed behind him, surprised that these people were so afraid of him.
She arrived late that day and hadn’t seen how fierce Long Fei was when he took action.
Facing five or six big men from the cafeteria department, it only took him a couple of punches to lay them all down.
The rumor spread that Long Fei was a retired special forces soldier and that everyone should avoid him in the future.
No matter what Long Fei said, Big Head just wouldn’t get up.
Eventually, Long Fei served himself some food; it turned out to be a real self-service, even when getting his meal.
He, Wang Xiaoya, and Zhang Li found a spot to sit down without seeing Tian Yuan.
At the next table, they were talking about Tian Yuan, mentioning how he had somehow offended the new head of the administrative department and got demoted directly by him.
Long Fei, Wang Xiaoya, and Zhang Li listened in surprise.
Zhang Li immediately pleaded with Long Fei, turning to him anxiously, "Long Fei, quickly contact Chu Feng, don’t let him fire my Liu Kai as well!"
