Chapter 439: Chapter 439: The Old Rascal

Long Fei flicked the forehead of the youngster, who then turned around with a silly smile and quietly asked Long Fei, "You’ve struck it rich, huh? That girlfriend of yours is way too pretty!"

Long Fei smiled briefly, noting Lin Yingying’s shy demeanor, and chose not to talk about it.

He asked, "What’s happening in our village? Did the mayor come?"

Li Heiwa nodded and said, "Yeah, he came yesterday, along with many other high-ranking officials from the city."

"Why?"

Long Fei was a bit curious.

Li Heiwa explained, "A while back, an agricultural scientist was touring our village and stumbled upon the red soil in the terraced fields. You know the sandy land where even corn can hardly grow. The expert insisted that it was suitable for planting Chinese roses and even invested his own money to lease more than a dozen mu of terraced fields, where he set up greenhouses and started planting Chinese roses. Now, the first batch of Chinese roses has blossomed. It’s said that the quality of the flowers is really good and they’ve even reached the standards for export. The city authorities are taking this seriously and are planning to turn our place into a base for Chinese roses. In the future, it’s not just going to be about growing flowers; they are also planning to develop it into a tourist attraction!"

Long Fei and Lin Yingying exchanged looks, feeling quite happy about it.

Their village was one of the poorest in the county, and the state has provided a lot of subsidies for poverty alleviation in the past two years.

But this couldn’t fundamentally change anything, as the village had no land, no fish near the sea, and forestry was no longer allowed.

It left everyone without a source of livelihood, and most of the young people had gone out to work, leaving only the elderly in the village.

If this base for Chinese roses could be established, the villagers would definitely have a better life in the future.

Before he came back, he was considering launching a wealth project for the village.

He had initially planned to invest in a pig farm, but now, why bother with pigs when growing flowers could be much more profitable?

He took out a pack of Zhonghua cigarettes and gave it to Li Heiwa, asking him to get in touch with the kids and come to his place for a drink tonight.

Li Heiwa couldn’t stop showing his teeth with glee, thinking Long Fei really had made it big.

Handing out Zhonghua cigarettes like nothing, only a few months gone and he’s got a car, a girlfriend, truly envy-inducing.

After Lin Yingying drove away, he thought to himself.

If he had such a beautiful woman, he would hold her in his arms every day, not willing to let go for a single minute!

The rural village in the northern coastal region still looked somewhat rugged.

Although there was a concrete road in the village, it wasn’t easy for vehicles to traverse.

Everybody’s houses were scattered here and there.

Built wherever the land was flat, they stood quite randomly.

The well-off households all had two-story houses made of red bricks and tiles.

Most of the homes, however, were old stone-built dwellings, with no courtyards, and directly outside was their own plot of land.

Fortunately, the surrounding environment was very pleasant.

With the hills as a backdrop and the sea in front.

There was also a stream flowing through the village; developing it into a tourist area indeed had potential.

If Chinese roses could be successfully cultivated, that would be a significant selling point.

As the two of them drove back, the neighbors seemed to have gone up the hill to see what the fuss was about, making it rather quiet now.

Lin Yingying breathed a sigh of relief, worried about being uncomfortable around too many people.

Their gazes made her feel like a panda in a zoo, exceedingly rare and strange.

Long Fei brought in the gifts and, with her following, called into the house, "Grandpa, are you home?"

On the way, he had called Elder Long, but the phone didn’t get through.

The two pushed open the door and entered; the house was empty.

A pot of tea was steeping on the table, and the only entertainment was a simple radio, no television in sight.

All the furniture was handmade, which made Lin Yingying frown, surprised at the poor living conditions Long Fei had during his childhood.

Her grandfather had contacted the Long Family many times, but Elder Long had always ignored them.

It seemed Elder Long was a proud man, not wanting to accept any charity from Lin’s Group.

Long Fei found a clean stool for her to sit on, poured her a glass of water, and said with a smile, "Try this, genuine mountain spring water, very sweet!"

Lin Yingying took the glass and asked, "Where did Grandpa go?"

Long Fei shook his head, "I don’t know, he’s probably gone up the mountain to watch the excitement. If you’re bored, I can accompany you to take a look."

Lin Yingying smiled and said, "You’re interested in that Chinese rose project, aren’t you?"

Long Fei looked at her, thinking to himself how sharp her mind was, always able to see through what he was thinking.

He nodded in admission, "Yes, I’ve been wanting to invest in something for the village anyway. If this project is reliable, I’ll put my money in it. Anyway, I have more money now than I can spend."

Lin Yingying took a sip of water, saying relaxedly, "That’s easy, one of Lin’s Group’s subsidiaries specializes in creating tourism projects. They have mature planning and management schemes. If you want, I can help you make contact."

"That could work!"

Long Fei nodded with a smile, feeling that she was increasingly proving to be the perfect wife material.

She could manage the household and also stand on her own.

Such a wife was truly hard to come by.

After waiting for a while without seeing Elder Long return, Long Fei picked up his backpack and simply took her up the mountain.

As they approached, they could see colorful flags planted on the terraced fields in the distance.

It was apparent that the city was placing great importance on this project.

Now with targeted poverty alleviation, lifting an entire village out of poverty and into wealth was a significant achievement.

With the city paying close attention, those below would dare not neglect it.

The people from the village were huddled together at the front, held back by a security line that prevented them from getting closer.

From a distance, Long Fei could see his grandfather, laughing and talking while holding his third aunt’s hand.

Compared to him, his grandfather was much more flirtatious, quite famous in Longjiawan Village, in fact.

People gave him the nickname, "Old Libertine."

The third aunt was a widow whose husband had died early, leaving her to raise two children on her own.

She was attractive and considered the goddess of the village bachelors.

His grandfather would often take liberties with her; there he was, smoking a cigarette, seemingly telling fortunes.

From a distance, Long Fei called out, "Elder Long!"

When he was a child, that was how he addressed him.

Lin Yingying frowned from the side, thinking that this grandson and grandfather pair was a bit too unserious, right?

From afar, she could see that Long Fei’s grandfather was rather tall. Despite his advanced years, he still stood straight.

His hair was all white, and he even tied a small braid at the back.

He held a tobacco pipe in his hand and sported a goatee.

With a white lab coat paired with black pants, he really did have the air of a fortune teller.

Long Santai turned around and first froze upon seeing his eldest grandson, and then he noticed Lin Yingying.

He widened his eyes and started running.

Long Fei hurriedly chased after him, calling out from behind, "Grandpa, why are you running?"

Long Santai hid behind a persimmon tree, and after Long Fei ran over, he sneakily glanced at Lin Yingying and glared at Long Fei, saying, "You little rascal, why didn’t you announce your return?"

Last time, Lin Yingying insisted on coming back, but at that time she still didn’t know her betrothed was Long Fei.

Worried about giving it away, Long Fei had forewarned his grandfather to pretend not to recognize him at all costs when he saw him.

Elder Long had managed to avoid him with difficulty, but here he was, chased up by him.

Recalling this, Long Fei explained with a smile, "Grandpa, I’ve sorted everything out so we don’t need to hide anymore!"

"You should’ve said so earlier, you made an old man lose face!"

Long Santai finally breathed a sigh of relief and walked back with his hands behind his back, following Long Fei.

A group of aunties had already surrounded Lin Yingying. Upon learning that she was Long Fei’s girlfriend, they shouted excitedly, praising her beauty and congratulating Long Fei for being lucky enough to find such a pretty girl in the city.

Lin Yingying blushed and thought to herself that people in Long Fei’s village really were enthusiastic, even more so than relatives.
