Chapter 566: 565

"Brother Tian, it looks like your son is calling for you."

Listening to the chirping of the little bird outside, clumsily flapping its wings, Zhang Ling’er said with a laugh, but in Ye Tian’s view, the little bird flying awkwardly in the air was indeed waiting for him. He hadn’t told anyone about the bird’s flying speed and the power of its wings when it flapped them in the forest at noon.

This damn bird is really putting on a show.

Ye Tian was startled. Could it be that the guy has something to tell him?

"Ling’er, do you have a flashlight here?"

"Yes, I’ll go get it for you."

The little monk looked at Ye Tian with a look of silent reproach but didn’t say a word. Ye Tian just wanted to laugh seeing his expression and whispered, patting his shoulder, "Little Master, love requires taking the initiative, you can’t be hesitant."

"Amitabha, all is well."

Ye Tian was not discouraged and continued, "You can’t catch a wolf if you don’t set a bait. If you don’t confess, you won’t be able to get a wife."

Upon hearing about using a child to catch a wolf, the little monk quickly clasped his hands together and chanted, "Sinful, oh how sinful."

"Cut it out, you’re like a block of wood; no point in talking to you. If you like her, you like her, what’s with all this ’emptiness’ talk. Your master is already married with children, why are you still acting so prudish?"

Just as the little monk was about to speak, he saw Zhang Ling’er running over from the backyard with a flashlight. The words he was about to say remained unspoken; he only advised to be more careful and said nothing else. Ye Tian was inclined to ask what he meant by that, but out of consideration for Zhang Ling’er, he didn’t. Since the Monk could settle down deep in the mountains, he surely had a heart for seclusion; after all, the main thing was to take care of his wife and daughter. Why should Ye Tian interfere and talk about bizarre happenings to them?

After thanking Zhang Ling’er, Ye Tian walked out of the yard. Sure enough, the little bird was still hovering in the air.

"Let’s go, show me what you have to tell me. But just to be clear, don’t drag me into talking about love with the twittering birds again, and don’t think about pulling me to seek revenge against eagles or mynah birds or whatever!"

The little bird chirped happily and took off, leading the way. Ye Tian slipped the flashlight into his pocket and followed.

After a heavy rain, the ground in the forest was covered with puddles; a lot of water had accumulated under the thick layer of leaves. On the surface, it seemed like there was nothing but a layer of dry yellow leaves, but as soon as you stepped on them, the oozing water immediately engulfed your entire foot, which was rather irritating.

Walking in the bamboo forest, his entire body was drenched in no time, but Ye Tian didn’t mind. A slight exertion of his Qi Flow dried his body promptly. Yet the forest was so dense and getting soaked was too frequent that after a few times, he just let it be.

The little bird darted through the close-knit woods, occasionally perching on a branch to wait for Ye Tian to catch up.

A man and a bird, the cooperation in the woods was quite harmonious, no wonder Ye Tian considered the bird as his son. He had no idea how long he had been walking, only knowing that the bamboo grove in front of him had turned into a broadleaf forest, with the more common deciduous trees.

The forest was quiet, occasionally stepping on and breaking a dry twig, which would make a loud noise resounding through the whole space, startling Ye Tian at first, but he got used to it later.

Looking at the increasingly dark forest, Ye Tian knew that the sun must have completely set.

Even during broad daylight, the translucency here isn’t great, and as soon as night falls, it’s like reaching out and not being able to see your own fingers.

The darkness is one thing, but Ye Tian has a habit of making marks along the way when he walks. As he goes, sometimes he even encounters the marks he left behind. This is definitely the rhythm of getting lost. Just when he’s about to remind himself, the little bird takes him on a different path every time, artfully missing areas with marks. It crisscrosses without seeming logic, but it connects all the paths previously taken, almost as though it’s drawing some sort of bewildering pattern.

Ye Tian sees it all and curses inwardly, "What’s with you, lousy bird? Where did you learn to be so crafty with all these twists and turns? You deserve to be eaten by a hawk, serves you right!"

Thinking of the Pale Eagle from the daytime, Ye Tian suddenly felt a sense of regret. That was a grand eagle with a wingspan over two meters. Where else nowadays could he find such a fine specimen of Pale Eagle? In the black market, it would sell for at least a hundred thousand, maybe even eighty thousand. If well trained, it could fetch five hundred thousand or so.

Holding onto his regret, Ye Tian trudges forward lifelessly following the little bird.

Suddenly, a sense of immense crisis hits him head-on. Instinctively, Ye Tian rolls to the ground and takes cover behind a large tree; but the feeling of danger doesn’t dissipate even behind the tree. On the contrary, it suddenly fills the air, omnipresent.

When did it appear!

Sweat pours down Ye Tian’s forehead. A burst of Qi Flow strong enough to appear all at once could only mean two things: traps or an ambush!

Could it be that this little bird was just waiting for him to fall for it? Damn it, I was being kind and saved you; serves me right for being blind!

As Ye Tian wallows in self-pity, he notices the green bird that led him here perched on a tree branch overhead.

"Hey bird, did you set this trap for me?!"

Ye Tian half threatens, half snarls, but unexpectedly, the green bird couldn’t care less about him. It just tilts its little head, looking at Ye Tian as if to say, come and hit me!

Ye Tian can’t be bothered to quibble with him; after all, in the end, he has to rely on himself.

The bone-chilling cold still lingers in the air, but the atmosphere hasn’t intensified nor weakened, which suggests that he hasn’t entered a danger zone.

Ye Tian gingerly sticks his head out from behind the tree, and in order not to have it mysteriously chopped off, he only makes a slight probe before quickly pulling back.

Damn it, that scared the hell out of me!

Hiding and panting heavily behind the tree, Ye Tian curses loudly in his mind. Although nothing flew out at his head, the mental tension was no easy burden to bear.

The green bird perched on the branch seems to find Ye Tian’s panicked behavior quite pathetic, dismissively smirks, chirps a flurry of disdainful tweets, and then flies out ahead, the scorn clear for all to see.

"You darned bird, what are you showing off for! Come on down and let’s have a one-on-one!"

While Ye Tian grumbles, his feet move on their own. He can’t just stand still; as the sky darkens, who knows whether Zhang Liang has returned or not.

So far, Zhang Liang remains the person he fears most.
