The Beautiful Boss's Personal Bodyguard -
Chapter 558 - 557
Chapter 558: 557
Zhang Ling’er walked over from the front courtyard, carrying a basket on her arm covered with a red cloth. Ye Tian glanced at it as if casually, but his stomach was already growling. Still, too shy to lose face, he continued to lie on the ground staring at the bamboo forest.
"Hello, Beauty Zhang."
Zhang Liang said with a smile. Zhang Ling’er looked at him and said, "My dad says you’re a civil servant, a very serious person, and told me not to easily interact with you."
"Serious people should of course be taken seriously. But Miss Zhang, you are smart and nimble, it’s better to be gentle. Your dad is concerned for your safety, of course he would say that, but you should be cautious with strangers. With me, there’s no need. I’m also a Zhang, maybe hundreds of years ago, we were from the same clan."
This remark amused Zhang Ling’er, who snickered and said, "Who says people with the same surname are from the same clan? You’re really funny."
"Not just funny, but also very comical, right, Group Leader Zhang?"
Zhang Ling’er put the basket on the ground and said, "You guys eat quickly, my mom is waiting for me in the front courtyard."
As soon as she put the basket down, the young girl turned around and ran off, leaving only a bouncing and jumping figure behind. Ye Tian was too absorbed to notice these, and it was Zhang Liang who reminded him to be more careful in the future.
"I’ll just be careful of you."
"No, there’s also Master Kurong—no, he should be referred to as the father of little sister Zhang Ling’er. So, heh heh."
Ye Tian, chewing on a steamed bun, said unclearly, "You’re really sleazy."
...
The stone slabs in the courtyard had to be laid in batches, waiting for one batch to set before proceeding to the next. During this break, the two of them had to rush to the bamboo forest to chop bamboo. The old monk said it was to build some guest rooms in the back for pilgrims staying overnight. Ye Tian absolutely didn’t believe this excuse; just look at this broken temple, hardly anyone comes by except the odd night owl. Not even half a bun would be spared, let alone a single ant in the yard being starved to death.
Despite his grumbling, the bamboo still had to be chopped, as it was someone else’s land. If they didn’t obey, food and drink could be cut off, and they would only have to go to the mountain to forage.
Ye Tian carrying a machete, and Zhang Liang carrying a hoe, followed a path trodden by those before them, and headed up the mountain.
The little monk also wanted to go, but was held back by the old monk, who said he was a reincarnation of a Bodhisattva from heaven and should hurry up and study the Scriptures. Otherwise, sooner or later, his mortal body would be disdained by the Buddha and it wouldn’t matter if it was lost or not. These words didn’t scare the little monk; he was just worried that if he really became an immortal and flew away, what would happen to Ling’er?
The mountainside was covered in bamboo, although there were many, finding one meeting Monk Kurong’s standard of "six inches round, ten feet long" without any scars on the bamboo and no mud at the root was rare. It was really tough for the two men. Climbing the mountain was exhausting and they also had to chop through obstructing weeds with a knife. After finishing the shortcut trodden by predecessors, they had to struggle through thorns and underbrush to continue climbing. Soon after, the two sat down on the ground to rest.
"Water."
In adversity, true feelings are seen. At least now, Ye Tian started to find Zhang Liang, carrying the big hoe, somewhat agreeable, and handed over the green military water bottle hanging from his waist.
Zhang Liang said a quick thanks, took a couple sips of water from the bottle without touching his lips to it. Ye Tian’s sliver of good feelings vanished instantly; this guy is just too pretentious, he’s a grown man, does he worry I have AIDS or something?
Seeing Ye Tian’s face change, Zhang Liang explained, "Don’t mind it, it’s just a rule set by our team, I didn’t mean it personally. I’m just used to it."
Used to it. Ye Tian thought back to when he first returned to the city and also demanded military standards from himself, he quickly found peace with it, even though he still felt a bit awkward, it was much better than earlier.
Zhang Liang tossed the water bottle over, glanced around and chuckled, "There’s a saying that a mountain isn’t grand without a dragon; I wonder if there are any immortals on this mountain."
"Bullshit. The altitude here is barely 600 meters, not even 800 meters. Dragons, no chance, but mosquitos aplenty. They dare to bite in broad daylight, not afraid of death, hey, there’s another one."
Ye Tian was quick, swatting down a mosquito biting the back of his hand.
"Let’s go, if we don’t fix the old monk’s bamboos right, I’m afraid I won’t be able to take you with me, and you won’t be able to leave either."
"That bald-headed monk is just trying to swindle us, the little monk told me all about it. Originally, that old baldy wanted to build a house but couldn’t because he lacked manpower, so it was put off. Now that he finally seized two free laborers, he’s definitely going to milk it."
Zhang Liang was noncommittal, hoisted the hoe, and followed behind.
After a few steps, the leading Ye Tian suddenly stopped, raised his head to look at the dome-shaped bamboo forest above. This kind of view can often be seen in dense forests, looking up often makes one dizzy, also known as Vertigo.
"What’s wrong?"
Ye Tian squinted at the canopy, a gust of wind passed through and a few bamboo leaves fluttered down. In the halo of dizziness above, a leaf swirled gently and drifted before him, almost like a slow-motion scene. The leaf glided over his head, slowly sliding down in front of Ye Tian, over his nose, Ye Tian reached out, and the leaf fell into his palm.
"Do you watch TV?"
Ye Tian out of the blue asked, momentarily puzzling the following Zhang Liang, who then shook his head, but realizing Ye Tian couldn’t see the gesture, he added, "Not really."
Looking down at the leaf in his hand, Ye Tian muttered, "On TV, scenes like this usually foreshadow something big about to happen."
Suddenly, a fierce wind whipped through the forest, thick bamboo stalks uniformly bent in one direction, the slender bamboo leaves like small sharp short swords, all neatly pointing the same way, a bamboo stalk hanging numerous green little swords, wildly shaking in the strong wind.
Ye Tian instinctively gripped the tool in his hand, coming to his senses and realizing it was just a firewood cutter, he dropped it, and a one-foot blue blade sprang from his fingers. Behind him, Zhang Liang held onto the hoe with one hand, carefully watching around, the unseen dangers within the forest are the most perilous.
"I recommend you watch more TV. When faced with such situations, don’t even think of running away, you need to fight!"
No sooner had he finished speaking than an even fiercer gust of wind swept in, this one much more focused than the previous, clearly because that big guy behind this was coming. Ye Tian didn’t hesitate any longer, rushed towards the spinning eye of the wind, his figure nearly faster than the wind itself, "Got you!"
