Chapter 95: What Is At Stake

Chapter 95: What Is At Stake

Before it could lay those vicious long hands on him, Cassian took his hand to the back waist of his trouser, bringing out the mirror he had successfully grabbed from the table earlier. He pointed it at the creature’s face, showing it its own horrid reflection, and to Madeline’s surprise, the creature immediately halted.

Upon seeing its own reflection in the mirror, a loud shriek escaped its mouth like the sound of a banshee, and to Madeline’s awe, the creature was instantly swallowed into the glass of the mirror before it could think of escaping. She watched as Cassian slammed the mirror to the ground, shattering the glass into pieces.

Tiny black soot escaped from the broken glasses before vanishing completely into thin air.

The room immediately regained its eerie silence after the creature was no more, and Cassian let out a breath of relief as he leaned his back against the wall, feeling relaxed that they had gotten rid of the ghost without anyone getting hurt.

Looking at Madeline who stood at the other end of the room, he never expected to see the woman run towards him as she immediately embraced him with her hands connecting around his neck, not minding that he looked like a vampire in front of her.

He could feel her body still tremble in his arms as she hugged him, but he also sensed the relief that came with it, making him wrap one arm around her as he embraced her in return, equally feeling glad that she didn’t get hurt by that thing.

"Are you alright?" He asked softly when she finally pulled back to meet his Amber-brown eyes that had returned, and she nodded her head while smiling at him. "Yes, I’m... I’m fine." Her response came out in a hush tone as she was still in the middle of recovering her voice.

Tapping her cheeks lightly in a reassuring gesture as though saying ’everything was alright now’, he retracted his gaze to the box they had opened, and his expression turned into a subtle frown as his brows creased into a state of rumination.

"I have no idea what uncle William must have done before he died..."with his voice trailing off, he left Madeline’s side to go pick up the box they had found.

"But...but what on Earth was that thing?" Madeline still wanted to know what sort of ghost creature that was, a ghost that could not only touch, but be touched as well.

"Let’s head to my study room, we can talk there without any disturbances. Right now, it’s best we leave this place before another one shows up."

’ANOTHER ONE??’ Madeline screamed in her head as she alarmingly looked around in case there was truly another one lurking in the dark, but there were no other ghosts in sight except for Lily who still stood outside.

The sight of her reminded Madeline of the frightened expression she saw on her face, and it was the first time she’s seen Lily give off such an expression of fear, or any expression to be more specific.

Finding it risky to linger in this deadly place, Cassian grabbed the box from the ground and exited the room with Madeline by his side. They closed it up, locking it the way they had met it before quickly going up the stairs and exiting the place safe and sound.

Stepping into the main part of the mansion, everything was still the way it was with the bright light and familiar look of the corridor. It calmed Madeline’s racing heart to see that they were no longer in there, and this will certainly be the last time she’ll let herself step into an area so dangerous, but at the same time, she felt glad she experienced this with Cassian.

"Father clearly has some explaining to do." Cassian’s gaze remained fixed on the box in his hand, his eyes filled with questions as to why his father didn’t burn the rest of William’s things along with his clothes and other weird stuff.

No one else except Madeline and himself could see ghosts. His first encounter with a ghost also came from that place before it even got restricted, and the ghost he saw looked exactly like a normal human, except he was still a child to realize what he had seen.

So what could a fiend be doing up there??

"He won’t be returning till tomorrow, and you cannot tell him we’ve been here, we weren’t meant to be here in the first place." Madeline reminded him despondently before crossing her arms below her chest as they went down the stairs to the second floor. "Why would your uncle William have books that contain the records of missing/deceased people? If I’m not mistaken, Inna made mention of you being afraid of this uncle Williams."

She looked at Cassian who didn’t deny it, and that immediately confirmed what Inna told her had to be true. Curious about their late uncle, Madeline asked. "What was your uncle Williams like? Did he visit or was he living with everyone?"

Safely making it to their room without being spotted by the servants or any of Juliana’s children, Cassian and Madeline quickly changed from their dusty outfits before moving to Cassian’s study room with the box.

Opening the door, he allowed Madeline to step into the room first before entering and closing it behind him. Unbeknownst to the both of them, Isabella stood at the top of the stairs with Abbot, quietly watching them go into Cassian’s study room with an unusual box in their grasp.

"Cas is using his study room after a long time, do you think he’s starting to investigate the missing people case?" Isabella mindlessly blabbed out her question as she leaned against the upstairs railing. "If Cassian ever takes this seriously, the competition will be tough for you."

"What and how I plan to solve this case is nothing of your concern." Abbot quipped harshly without looking in his wife’s direction. His eyes were coldly concentrated on the door to Cassian’s study room. "The case is mine to bother about, you should focus on trying to find a way on how you can get pregnant before Cassian’s wife beats you to it. Wouldn’t it be a shame to have Cassian’s wife get pregnant before you who came into the mansion two years before her?"

"And what does that mean? What are you trying to say to me?" Offended by his words, Isabella looked at her husband who didn’t bat an eye in her direction. "I’m talking to you Abbot!"

"Don’t raise your voice at me." He looked at his wife, his eyes displaying clear warning as he moved closer to her. "you know exactly what is at stake if she gets pregnant before you. Instead of spying on Cassian like he’s the apple of your eyes, try and figure out a way on how to conceive."

"What...what did you say to me??"

"You think I don’t know?" Abbot held back a cold chuckle, silently wondering how stupid his wife must have assumed he was to not notice. Suddenly, his expression turned dark to the point it frightened Isabella as she moved backwards.

"You see my dear wife, Cassian is very typical of a forbidden fruit, the same goes for his wife. A lot of people, things can easily get attracted, but no one can go near them as there are severe consequences for having to taste the forbidden fruit. Do you understand?"

Isabella didn’t respond to his conundrum as she upsettingly looked away from him, her heart feeling pained that he even dared to say such to her. She could feel him lean close as he whispered strictly into her ear.

"Stay away from Cassian, get closer to his wife instead, and see if she’s dumb enough to let you extract information from her. While you do so, try and find out how far they’ve gone through being intimate, and then report back to me."
