Chapter 94: A Ghost In The Room (2)
"What in heaven’s name is that thing?!!" Madeline’s whispers were laced with unbelievable shock as she watched the shadowy figure emerge from the darkness where it hid itself. Unable to tear her eyes off the fear-inspiring figure, Madeline took a cautious step back when it took a step forward.
"Don’t move." Cassian’s alarmed whisper signaled for Madeline to freeze when he noticed the vague figure had turned its head in her direction. The figure was barely visible, almost like a shadow, but it was definitely there, and it was getting closer, further enhancing the dark chills that ran through their spine as they tried not to make even the tiniest of sounds.
In silence, they watched with horrific eyes as the figure shambled closer and closer, its footsteps echoing through the empty room. From the creature’s silhouette, Cassian and Maddie could make out its outline as their gazes fell on its shadow that displayed on the wall.
Its body was bent and twisted, and its arms were abnormally long, reaching the ground.
Madeline clasped her palm over her mouth to cease the scream that was at the point of escaping from her throat. Stealing a glance at Cassian, the young lad had his eyes on the creature, and like he sensed Madeline’s gaze on him, he also looked at the woman whose face had turned white from the terror.
"Do you see a mirror anywhere?" He whispered to the woman who warily surveyed the place where she stood, but there was no mirror near her side.
She shook her head in dismay, and Cassian returned his attention to the figure that stood motionless before them. The figure was no ordinary person; it was something sinister, something that shouldn’t exist, and Cassian, who has only heard stories of such creatures, shockingly found himself staring directly at one, and the strangest part of it was that it lurked in Williams’ study room.
"Cassian." In her attempt to draw Cassian’s attention, the motionless figure detected the faint voice of someone, causing its head to turn in Madeline’s direction, and the lady herself froze once again after registering the fact that the creature had sensed her presence.
"Speak as softly as you can." Came Cassian’s reminder as he knew the creature could easily sense their presence if they made a loud noise.
"What is it?"
"The table beside you, there’s... there’s a mirror there." Madeline spoke faintly, her trembling voice fading slowly in the still room that it became difficult for Cassian to grab her every word, but at the mention of the table, he stole a quick glance beside the table at his left to see that there was truly a mirror resting on it.
"Now I need you to listen to me, no matter what happens, stay where you are, and don’t move." Cassian admonished softly. "I’ll fetch the mirror, but in the meantime, try not to move from where you are, currently it looks focused on you, so don’t even think about moving."
Madeline swallowed hard as her nails dug into the flesh of her skin. She could hear the sound of her heart pounding heavily against her chest in fear, and she felt dizzy. Not willing to risk putting the two of them in danger, Madeline closed her eyes and tried to keep her cool, remaining glued to her spot like Cassian had said.
Noticing the creature no longer staring in his direction, Cassian cautiously moved to the left with tentative steps. He stole a glance at the table to get a glimpse of how far it was, and it was just a few feet away from the angle where he stood. Feeling assured by the close distance, he continued to move with silent steps, wanting to reach the table where the mirror lay without alerting the ghost creature.
On the other hand, Madeline let out a breath when the fear in her heart was starting to become difficult for her to contain. A ghost lurking in here felt ominous to her, and she couldn’t shake off the feeling that the ghost was here for a specific reason, but then why is it after the two of them??
Releasing her gripping finger from the table behind her, Madeline silently took a step back to keep as much distance as she could from the terrifying ghost creature. As long as she didn’t make any noise, the figure won’t be able to locate her presence.
Madeline stole a glance at Lily who remained at the door, looking a bit frightened to Madeline’s surprise. The little girl watched in silence as everything happening in the room began to unfold before her very eyes, yet she made no attempt to step inside.
Continuing with her slow and silent steps, everything was working out well for Madeline, but unfortunately, her foot snagged on a loose piece of wood, and she stumbled, nearly falling as a short panicked yelp escaped from her mouth before she could even control it.
Almost immediately, the figure turned its head in her direction, casting a chilling glare that made her blood run cold as she instinctively froze from its lethal stare. When the motionless figure moved in her direction, due to the lantern that had been set aside, Madeline was able to grasp the face of the creature in the dim light.
It was a face she would never forget; its eyes were sunken and hollow, its teeth sharp as knives, and its skin was a sickly shade of green. The figure reached out its long arms, and Madeline knew it was time to run as it angrily growled in her direction, giving her presence away.
A scream escaped her lungs as she made an attempt to run, but someone unexpectedly pounced on the creature before its long arms could grab hold of her, saving her from her early doom as she impulsively looked away, and the next thing she heard was something falling to ground followed by a light groan.
Opening her eyes to see what exactly happened, a shocking gasp escaped from Madeline’s mouth as she watched Cassian and the ugly-looking creature drop to the ground due to Cas’s unexpected attack, and Cassian immediately evaded those long arms that had the intention of creating a hole in his chest as he wisely rolled the other way, quickly rising to his feet as he did so.
With the two of them locking gazes, Madeline noticed Cassian’s eyes had turned red, just like what she saw when he drank her blood, but the look in those eyes showed a different emotion as he looked ready to tear the creature into two.
They could hear its ragged breathing as the creature equally met Cassian’s profound stare. Its low growls sent shivers running down Madeline’s spine at the thought of Cassian challenging something so dangerous, but the look in Cassian’s eyes gave an impression of bloodlust as he equally showed his fangs to the creature.
"No one lays a hand on my wife!" Something in his eyes snapped as the creature angrily growled in his direction before advancing towards Cassian with its long arms stretched forward to grab him.
