Chapter 89: A Peek Into The Past (1)

Reaching the empty balcony at the top corridor, Cassian stole in a deep breath as the air at the top of the balcony felt satisfyingly refreshing, and that was what he needed to cool off the anger that had him boiling earlier. He already knew not everyone would entertain the idea of his relationship with Maddie, but he expected them to be sensible enough to mind their business and respect his decision.

To put the record straight, he was really disappointed to see no one other than Catherine act this way, and now that he’s become very much aware of how she truly feels regarding his marriage, he’ll have to keep Madeline away from her sight.

"Do you need a drink?" All at once, someone stretched a glass of red wine from behind, handing it to the young lad who stared at the unending sight before him. Hearing this, Cassian didn’t bother to turn around to see who it was as he received the drink from the stranger, but he didn’t drink from it as his mind and gaze were on something else in particular.

"Anyone who walks in here can fill the rage in your system, take the drink while it’s still cold enough." The voice suggested, and Cassian’s eyes subconsciously shifted to look at the unfamiliar red-haired man who had uninvitedly joined him on the balcony.

For a split-second, his gaze shifted to the color of the wine, and its extreme redness reminded him of something more satisfying than the wine itself. Finding it strange someone would hand him such, his Amber-brown eyes clashed with a green one.

"Do I know you?" Cas’s question made the young man go deep into his thoughts as he leaned his back against the edge of the balcony, and he shook his head with a deceptive smile gracing his lips. He let out a deep sigh before looking up at the thousand stars that filled the night sky.

"You don’t need to know me in person, like they say; strangers are always the best people to talk to, we don’t judge." Came his extrospective response that left Cassian eyeing him from head to toe, silently wondering where he came from, and the young man beside him offered a smile before turning his body to look at Cassian.

"Forgive me in advance but I heard half of the conversation you had with that obsessed woman." He shrugged in a nonchalant manner. "It appeared interesting and I couldn’t walk away, but you better be careful, she doesn’t seem to take it lightly that she got replaced by...... another woman."

"She won’t do anything, she knows I won’t spare her." Catherine was good at ranting and giving threats, but if there was one thing he was sure of, the lady didn’t have the guts to implement any of her unnecessary threats. But based on the looks he got from the stranger, he felt the red-haired man knew exactly what he was saying.

"One still has to be cautious." His green eyes glinted with more meaning. "You never can tell what is being planned behind your back, if possible, at your front."

"Who are you again?"

"Just a gentleman who came to join you in your happy celebration. I didn’t bring any gifts since your family tends to have everything, but I did bring my blessings." He gave the young lad a sudden pat on the shoulder, and the confused Cassian quirked his brow up in suspicion, but didn’t utter what he had in mind.

"Right." He still doubted the stranger’s intention despite the harmless look on his handsome profile. His queer aura already had Cassian questioning, and if he wasn’t wrong, it felt inhumane.

"I’ll take my leave now." The young man finally moved away from the edge. "It would be wrong to exit the event without saying hello to the one who owns the event. Till we meet again my friend." And he walked out.

’Friend?’ Cassian watched the young man’s back with an intense gaze as he headed for the exit, and that’s when he noticed something.

A star-like symbol was tattooed at the back-nape of his neck, and Cassian’s eyes momentarily widened at the symbol until the young man vanished from his presence.

"That symbol...."

When the event finally came to a peaceful ending and the guests had taken their leave, everyone in the Albrecht family couldn’t wait to get some rest as they wished themselves goodnight.

Stepping into the comfort of his room, Cassian found Madeline already fast asleep on their bed. After their little moment down in the dining room, he never saw her since they got interrupted and of course, how silly of him to think the sleeping beauty will wait up for him.

Still standing in the doorway of their bedroom, Cassian watched as his wife slept peacefully in their bed. He couldn’t help the tender smile that spread across his face as he observed her chest rise and fall with each breath she took.

The soft light of the moon that filtered through the window was the only source of illumination in the otherwise dark room. It cast a silver glow over her features, but it was her hair that Cassian couldn’t take his eyes off of. Her midnight-black curls splayed out on the pillow in a wild mess, looking like the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

There was this weird thumping in his chest that didn’t feel like a normal heartbeat, and he only felt this way when he was with her.

He had always loved watching her sleep, but he couldn’t explain why. Maybe it was the peacefulness it brought him or the way she looked so vulnerable and innocent. He wasn’t sure, but there was something magical about it.

Moving away from the door, he went straight into the bathroom to freshen up before joining her on the bed.

Taking his seat at the other edge of the bed, he was careful of his movements in order to avoid disturbing her slumbers, and when he looked at the stand, he noticed she had taken the last pills that were needed to control her trauma.

He’ll have to see their private physician and get a new one for her.

Returning his attention to her face, it was difficult not to stare. Her eyelashes were like tiny wings, and her lips were the most inviting shade of pink, making him reminisce on how they tasted against his, and he involuntarily swallowed when he felt his desires coming back at the thought of just experiencing it one more time.

Unable to resist, he leaned down and pressed his lips to hers, feeling her warm breath on his skin and his eyes involuntarily sealed shut. She stirred in her sleep but didn’t wake up from the soft contact of their lips.

Pulling away before he ended up doing something out of line, he continued watching her, and then something flickered in his eyes.

The memories of the first time he saw her came like a flashback and it was on a twilight evening.
