The Baroness Misbehaves
Chapter 88: Obsessive Conflict

Chapter 88: Obsessive Conflict

Releasing a sigh as though he was starting to feel suffocated by the tension crowding the dining room, he finally looked down at the woman who was currently blocking his path, stopping him from walking away and avoiding her presence.

"That woman you’re referring to is my wife." He clarified bluntly, not giving a damn about the lady who was currently devastated before him. "And I don’t seem to understand what you mean by hurting you intentionally, when have I ever done that?"

"You were supposed to marry me!" Catherine blurted out, stunned by his audacity to play dumb as to what she was visibly referring to. "You knew the arrangements had been made, you knew how much I loved you, but you got married to that..... to that thing!" Catherine couldn’t hide her disgust as her eyes followed the path Madeline had taken, and that’s when Cassian stepped closer, forcing the young lady to meet his Amber-brown eyes that flashed with silent fury, one he wouldn’t wish she invoked out of him.

"Call my wife a thing and I will not be held responsible for what happens to you." The air instantly went chilly as Cassian’s gaze visibly darkened at her remark, sending fear trickling down her spine. "You speak of pain when I haven’t even started with you. To be honest I’m not jobless enough to impact silly pains on anyone, so whatever terrible feelings you’ve got you inflicted on yourself."

He snapped his fingers at her face, startling Catherine as she took a step back. "This is not some fatuous fairy-tale, I’m only holding myself back because of the friendship I have with your brother, else you would hate me for what I planned on doing to you, this will be the last time you disrespect my wife in front of me, do you get that??"

"Cassian." Her voice immediately turned weak after taking notice that she had angered the young lad, and she looked at him with pitiful teary eyes. "Believe me I have tried to get over you, I did everything I could but I just....I just couldn’t and you know this." She confessed. "I was heartbroken when I figured you got married, you didn’t think about the embarrassment it would leave on my name, but...but why that girl?"

Catherine had tried her possible best to see what was so different about that lady, was it beauty? Was it her shape? Was it her attitude? Catherine couldn’t tell how she lacked all these qualities. She’s always loved Cassian right from her tender age even when he didn’t bat an eye in her direction.

She had always treated him right and respected him even when he never took interest in her, while she hoped silently in her mind that in the future, he would take notice of her feelings and reciprocate them in return.

When Cas and her brother became close, she thought it would be her opportunity to seize Cassian for herself while she still had the chance, to the point she privately met the Duke so he could assist her win over Cassian, and everything would have gone fine if he hadn’t met that woman who snatched him away before she could.

"You can’t hurt me like this, you knew what I felt for you and yet you...." Her fist balled at her side as the anger and pain in her chest grew, and then she unclenched her fist. "You can’t do this to me and think I’ll let you go just like that."

"And you say I ruin your reputation?" Cassian tried not to laugh at how daft her perception of the situation was. "To begin with, I never fancied the idea of getting married to a woman like you and I was clearly against it, I never led you on, you never once appealed to me and I don’t think you ever will until I start seeing pigs fly. I’m sorry but I have tried my best not to hurt you with my words since I consider the fact you’re Orson’s sister, but you leave me with no choice if you plan to act flea-brained."

Cassian’s apology was hundred percent not close to a sincere apology.

He was merciless with his words and it broke whatever little pieces of her heart that remained unshattered. "Do yourself the favor and don’t cower before men like they are your life-line. Give yourself some respect and stay the hell away from me, if someone sees us here, your reputation could be further damaged since news about the well-mannered Catherine could be misinterpreted, and I’m sure you don’t want to be considered a slut who is having affairs with a married man?"

He smiled. "You came to enjoy the celebration regarding my wedding, so I advise you to keep it that way. Be happy for me and you can have as many refreshments as you’d so prefer. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I don’t think I can stand this unhygienic conversation with you anymore."

"Cas..." and he eyed her with visible distaste before leaving the dining room, already feeling irritated enough that his moment with Madeline had been spoiled by her intrusive presence.

Catherine watched his back as he finally left her alone in the dining room, and she felt like a black stone that had been abandoned under the deep blue sea. The tears she had been holding spilled from her eyes as she recalled every one of his words, and the only reason he’d behave this way towards her was because of that woman he married.

Wiping away her tears, Catherine stayed in the dining room to recover for a while, wanting to get herself back before moving to the ballroom, but unfortunately, it didn’t work as she angrily slammed her fist on the table after having to remember seeing Cassian all up in that woman’s arms.

That middle class woman!!

"We will see who is the real slut between us, if it’s me or your wife." She promised as her gaze turned deadly, and she wiped off the last drop of tear that escaped from her eyes.
