Chapter 240: Three Star Symbol

Chapter 240: Three Star Symbol

"It’s here??"

Monica’s terrified voice sounded more audible than usual as the room they were in quieted down, but as always, Osvaldo didn’t flinch at his own word, neither did their appalling expression do anything to make him feel unease. His composure was unfaltering.

"H... How do you know that?" Madeline asked.

"The energy just got ten times darker, a Fiend, Vampire or ghost aren’t capable of possessing such a mighty aura, I can’t detect where it’s coming from, but I can feel its energy."

"Isn’t this our lucky day." Cassian’s sarcasm was relatable to everyone.

"This is all so complicated, I don’t know why it’s here on this special day, but we better find it before the ceremony reeks of trouble." Osvaldo thoughtfully suggested, "in the meantime, let’s not make it too obvious, we shall blend in with the crowd and watch a few of the ceremonies take place, then we spread into a team and see if we can find it."

"Finding it isn’t the problem here." Orson shook his head, "the problem is how do we know it’s the right one? It’s killed so many innocent people already and ruined a lot of lives. I want to make sure I bash its face when I see it."

"Your anger is justified, Carmarthen had many victims it could manipulate, and to top it off you’re all humans. A lot of families or individuals have suffered because of it, and those who were also illegally turned against their will." Osvaldo understood his anger, "this is difficult, but if you keep your mind to anyone suspicious, study that person, and if you see a three star mark behind the back of their neck, it’s him."

"Ah yes." Cassian remembered the star symbol Geoffrey had told him about, "I completely forgot about the star symbol."

"It has three star symbols behind its neck, for cover-up, it’s bound to use a high collar shirt, that’ll be our Target."

"I’ll go with you." Maya immediately chose her partner, clinging onto Osvaldo’s arm and not minding the rest of the people present. She only wished she didn’t have to choose to follow Osvaldo into something so dangerous, she was well aware of what they were up against, but at the same time, it didn’t matter cause she knew Osvaldo would come to her aid if she got into trouble.

"Maddie and I will check the carnation bridge." Cassian also picked his partner, switching the attention away from Maya.

"That leaves me and Monica." Orson went to stand beside the lady with a little welcoming bow.

"I’m more of a fun person, you will enjoy my presence."

"As long as you don’t point that thing at me then we’ll be good." Monica accepted his friendly company before looking at Osvaldo, "we’ll check the four corners of the main hall incase we spot anything."

"Then it’s settled. But come with me first." Osvaldo suddenly held Monica’s wrist, pulling her towards him, "we’ll have to deal with that creature trying to crawl its way back. We can’t risk drawing its attention to the Master since it’s here, the rest of you can go for now, Maya will lead you to the ceremony. Monica and I will join when I get this done."

Before Maya could interject, Osvaldo took Monica outside and closed the door. Maya’s face scrunched with visible jealousy, not liking how close Osvaldo was when it came to her sister. The concern and care he shows her was completely different from how he treats Monica.

"Shall we?" Cassian’s voice snapped Maya out of her negative thinking.

"Hmm? Oh right! Of course!" Maya hid her displeasure with a smile and headed for the door, taking the three of them to where the main ceremony was held. When they got close, they could hear the low chattering of guests, and when Maya pulled the curtains aside, they stepped into the main hall.

A lot of guests were stylishly dressed as expected, and Madeline’s gaze scanned each one of them, more worried about the Fiends lurking around the corner, and Orson placed his hand on where he had secured his gun, feeling it in an attempt to reassure himself that he could take cover if anything happens.

"Do you see Napoleon?" Madeline asked, and Orson, who had been hearing of that name finally asked with furrowed brows.

"Who’s that?"

"The county council of Whitebridge, and Osvaldo’s older brother."

"Ahhh... that explains a lot." He mused, letting his gaze fall on the lavish decorations and how expensive the preparation of the ceremony turned out to be.

"Feel free to communicate with whoever you like." Maya stopped walking and turned around to look at them, "we’re currently down to three maidens who will be selected as Napoleon’s bride, we’ve missed the previous activities unfortunately."

"I don’t know how to speak the Whitebridge language, but I’m good on my own." Madeline reassured Maya who seemed surprised to hear it. "That can’t be helped, if they find out who’s daughter you are, there’ll be many of them who would like to interact with the daughter of a Fae."

"If my wife doesn’t want any interactions, no one can force her into it." Cassian stepped up, "Also, I have a very limited patience depending on how anyone gets close to my wife, so I’m not in support of this so-called ’interaction’ either. If her relatives can’t appreciate her presence, then I don’t see why others will."

"My parents were just being careful." Maya spoke up, and Cassian tried not to scoff at her silly excuse.

"Careful enough to speak about her late Mother without considering the daughter’s feelings. Yeah, I totally understand."

The look on Maya’s demeanor dropped, and she stood silent, unable to refute his words.

"I say we keep our eyes open for any Fiend." Madeline’s voice broke the silent argument between Maya and Cassian. "This is important, can we deal with other things later?"

"Yeah, we still have to see Napoleon, do we not?" Orson joined in, following in Madeline’s footsteps, but Cassian shook his head and said.

"I’ll meet you three in a minute, I don’t know if Elian has arrived or not. We left Inna with him so he’s more likely to bring her along. I’ll go check to make sure they haven’t run into any Fiends on the way." He whispered before departing from them.

"Be safe." Madeline mouthed the word when he turned to look at them, and he nodded his head with a smile before leaving through the curtains.

Walking past each wall lined in the hallway, Cassian could only hope Elian brought his sister with him. But is that possible since he has a date to attend?

"Of all days this decided to happen--" Cassian abruptly paused in his statement when he saw someone standing at a corner, facing sideways, and from the look of things, he was talking to someone, except Cassian couldn’t see who it was since the person was standing behind the corners of the hall.

Getting closer without alerting them of his presence, the person he spotted suddenly removed his black mask, revealing a shiny bright red hair that made Cassian’s eyes widen at the sight. For a moment he forgot how to walk upon seeing Elian.

No! Not Elian! Is this... Elijah???

Unable to hold in his curiosity, Cassian moved back slowly, entering a corner to get a peek at who Elijah was discussing with, and his heart dropped when the face of Abbot came to his view.
