Chapter 207: Elian’s Story (2)

"I got better the minute we agreed to do his bidding. Elijah felt thankful, he was critically close to the point of breaking down when he thought I was going to die, only to be saved at the last minute, but I felt anything but thankful since I knew we’d be getting ourselves into deeper trouble. It felt like we had made a deal with the devil"

He rose from his seat when it became uncomfortable to keep sitting on it, and he walked up to his window, staring out with his gaze distant.

"We were trained harshly. Day and night, we were forced to participate in life-threatening scenarios, he made us get accustomed to the sight of death, and we dared not bat an eye or look away if we wanted to have good food. People dying, human lives being tortured till they no longer breathed, he made us watch the collision of two carriages on a dreadful night, he brainwashed Elijah and I into believing those people where the enemies, but after Elijah escorted him to some place and ordered me to stay put till they returned, I watched the carriage for a while, and when I couldn’t stand the sight of innocent souls dying, I decided to help."

The image of the broken carriage flashed in his mind when he stepped out of the shadows where he hid himself.

"A man and a woman lay dead in the destroyed carriage, there was no sign of life, and their pulse dropped. I wanted to walk away since there was nothing I could do to help, but in the middle of it, that’s when I saw this little girl who had been sheltered by both the dead bodies. I knew immediately that she was someone special ascribe to how they sacrificed their bodies to save her, and she was the only one alive. I chose to save her instead by bringing her out of the carriage before anymore woods could fall and crush her. I hid her somewhere safe, somewhere I knew people would easily find her, and that’s when I ran into him on a carriage."

"Who?"

"Your uncle William." Elian simply said, turning around to look at Inna who had risen from the bed out of impulse on hearing her late uncle’s name being mentioned.

"Uncle William?? You saw him??"

"He saw me actually," Elian corrected, "I was afraid he’d misunderstand my actions cause I carried an unconscious girl in the middle of the night, but, although it was strange, he offered me help instead. Thanks to his Coachman, we were able to alert the people nearby about the accident that took place, and he offered to take me with him, like he already knew what I was. I couldn’t go with him because I couldn’t leave Elijah behind, I wanted to escape, but I wanted to escape with Elijah by my side, he was my only family at that time. Your uncle William didn’t force me, but in return for my kindness, he gave me this tattooed scar on my arm."

Raising his right sleeve up to his elbow, he showed Inna the tattooed scar her Uncle William’s had carved onto his skin using a knife. When Inna inspected it closely, her eyes widened in disbelief, and her brows shot up.

"This...This looks exactly like the scar he gave Cassian!"

"I know, your brother showed it to me, but I couldn’t tell him the meaning behind it. Trust me, Cassian having this scar was for his own good, I guess he sensed his nephew was going to face the same fate as the one I did, and gave him one."

"What is this scar??"

"It’s a protection spell," Elian elaborated it for her. "Can’t you see the unique crafting?" He made Inna aware of how intricate and neat the carving on his arm was. "Cas being a half-vampire has a connection with the special scar. Without it, he’d become a pure-blood. Pure-blooded vampires share a connection with the Mastermind, and they are easily controlled. This scar magically keeps us from sharing any connections with him, unlike Elijah who is a pure-blood, that’s why It’s difficult to bring him to his senses."

"That means Uncle William’s wasn’t crazy?" Inna lowered her gaze, batting her lashes frantically as it made sense now.

Uncle William always kept to himself when he lived under their roof, he wouldn’t let anyone into his study for reasons that were unknown, and Cas’s first experience with a ghost alarmed Uncle William’s about what was to come. All this time, they thought he was hurting Cassian for his disobedience, but who knew he was saving him instead.

"I think I’m going to have a headache, everything connects so..." Inna closed her eyes, trying to process her thoughts before she opened them to look at Elian.

"What happened after that?"

"I returned to my hideout before the Mastermind found out I had left. He trained us this way until we came of age when he could turn us into vampires. The process had been life-threatening, so he didn’t do it till he was sure we could handle it, and we did, but I was half-Vampire, Elijah became a pure-blood, he spent more time with the Mastermind cause he was the strongest amongst everyone, smart, fast and he had become attached to the darkness he didn’t want to leave."

"He killed people," Elian’s voice cracked a bit, recalling Elijah’s first kill, "he became one of them, and that was something I couldn’t do even though I stayed with them. I tried to speak with him, but he turned violent, he changed from the caring Elijah I once knew to a totally different person. His mind was poisoned, he was controlled, and he didn’t want to believe it. I told him I couldn’t stay, he helped me escape, but in return for his help, he made me promise to never cross paths with him, else, he wouldn’t stop himself from getting rid of me. I began to hate him without knowing, and to cut the long story short, I’m here."

Elian closed his eyes, the relief of telling someone about his past washing over him, and to his surprise, Inna gave him a comforting pat on the shoulder.

"Is this why you wanted to stay? Are you hoping to get your brother back?" She asked softly, and Elian scoffed in disdain at the idea.

"He wants to harm the Royal family, I can’t leave when they’re in the threats of Elijah. He’ll regret it if he kills them, and I want to save him from that guilt."
