Chapter 205: Trust (2)
That night, Inna found it difficult to get any sleep even when she tried. She kept tossing and rolling on the bed, hoping for some sleep to steal her away so the guilt in her heart can be replaced, but each time she closed her eyes, Elian’s striking face and his words would jolt her eyes open, and like that wasn’t enough trauma for tonight, Orson decided to add his when they could have both shared the sleepless night together.
"Sigh... I hate this." Inna muttered under her breath, gazing blankly at the ceiling with a downhearted expression on her pretty face, and with just the blink of an eye, it was already morning, and Inna found herself in a different sleeping position due to the constant tossing at night to get some sleep.
She moaned in frustration, pressing her pillow to her face to avoid the lights penetrating into her room to disrupt her sweet sleep. When it wasn’t working, Inna sat up on the bed looking deadpanned, her hair tousled on her head in a morning mess.
Without saying a word, she sluggishly got out of bed and went straight to the bathroom to get changed and prepared for the day. In her mind, she really hoped Elian had calmed down and wouldn’t get infuriated once she showed up in his room to check on him.
Meanwhile, in Elian’s room, the young red-haired vampire had finished writing a letter with his gorgeous pet bird resting on his study table. With one stroke of the ink pen on the parchment, Elian carefully folded it and glanced at his pet bird that stared idly at him.
With his index finger stretched forward, his pet bird instantly flew to rest on it, as though it already knew what it had to do. Elian placed the rolled-up parchment where it was meant to be before rising to his feet and moving to the window he had opened.
He looked at his bird and said, "remember, deliver the letter safely to Cas and Maddie, no one else. Do a good job and get a treat, if you mess this up, I’ll be having bird soup with your name on the menu."
The pretty-looking bird chirped at his low threat before flying off into the direction of the west, soaring high in the sky and getting lost in the clouds. The minute his bird had disappeared from sight, he heard a knock on the door.
"Come in."
When the door opened quietly, Elian turned around to see Inna stepping into his room with a glass of warm milk in her grasp. He already knew she was the one at the door, her scent was one of the things he had grown attached to without realizing it, and after everything he said last night, he couldn’t be more relieved to see her here, cause to be quite honest, he had gotten slightly worried that she would never speak to him after what he said.
Inna, who had taken countless deep breaths at the door before stepping in, froze at the entrance when Elian turned around to look at her. He stood tall, with a lean yet muscular build that made her blink in awe.
His strikingly handsome face was dominated by a shock of fiery-red hair that seemed to glow under the sunlight as he stood close to his opened window. His leaf-green eyes reminded her of the healthy green leaves coated with raindrops on an April morning, and his chiseled jawline did that face justice.
He was dressed in a simple, stylish tunic and trouser, but even in such humble garbs he exuded an air of confidence and style that stunned Inna. Has he always been this riveting to look at??
"Inna." He called her name, snapping her out of the trance she had unknowingly fallen into.
To his surprise, she walked up to him with an innocent smile, and although he sensed her hesitation, she stretched the glass of milk forward, urging him to take it.
"I...I made it for you, I mean to help you get better, taking milk in the morning does a lot to the body uhm....here." Knowing she was practically speaking utter rubbish, Inna chose to keep quiet and handed him the milk, but she noticed his reluctance to take it.
"Why aren’t you taking it?"
"Is it poisoned?" He asked, his eyes narrowing in full intent at the young lady whose expression changed into one of startlement, and then a slight frown appeared.
"Why would I stoop so low to poison someone? That’s not how I do things."
"A man has to be cautious, Women are popularly known to be the most dangerous creatures on Earth for a reason." And he received the milk from her grasp. "I appreciate the sudden kindness, which is very unlike you."
"I saved your life."
"I should get that tattooed so I won’t forget." He mocked with a sincere gaze, and Inna tried not to react as she had promised herself to treat him better today.
"How’s your wound? You’re already on your feet so I suppose it healed last night?" She asked, her gaze fixed on his covered abdomen, and Elian nodded while responding with a ’hmmn’.
He took a sip of the warm milk she had made for him. After the rain that dropped last night, the morning weather was quite chilly, and Inna had to put on her furry sweater before coming here in order to stay warm.
When the silence continued to grow, Inna decided to bring back the discussion of what happened last night, but Elian stopped her before she could make mention of it.
"Why don’t we forget it ever happened and start afresh? Saves us from the stress of apologizing, which you clearly suck at."
"Aaah.. how did you know?"
"You’re a tigress in lamb’s clothing."
"Fair enough."
For the first time, the two of them shared a smile together, which later turned awkward for the both of them since they took notice of the fact it was the first time they ever smiled genuinely at one another.
"Listen." Inna tried to change the mood, "we wanted you to come with us cause we knew we could use your help along the way. We can’t find our way to Whitebrige city’s capital without your help, and I won’t deny the fact that I never trusted you, presently, I’m trying to, but the only way you can earn it is by telling me the truth."
"What truth?"
"Who really are you? Where did you come from? What’s your story, Elian?" She asked, "the news of the sick King being attacked last night is everywhere, and Elijah is responsible for it because Orson and I saw you drag him away from the palace grounds. What connection do the two of you share with the King?
