Chapter 154: Meeting The King (1)
"It must have been too much trouble agreeing to drop me off." Cassian looked to his right, meeting the gaze of Alaric who had ordered his Coachman to stop the carriage in front of Cassian’s home.
"No need for formalities when we’re alone."
He looked out the window, staring at the beautiful medium-sized manor before meeting Cassian’s indifferent gaze.
"A lovely house you’ve got." He commented, and then his gaze instantly shifted to a young woman who had stepped out of the house. From her expression and the sweet smile on her lips, Alaric could guess she had heard the carriage stop and had come to check on who it was.
"Is that your wife?" He asked, leaving Cassian momentarily confused until the young lad also peered out the window to see Madeline standing at the porch, holding a lantern. She looked bright and beautiful, and her midnight black hair was let down, accentuating the youthfulness of her face.
"Yes, that’s my wife."
"Ahhhh..... That reminds me, I still have to punish you for getting married behind my back. Did you really think I’d forget? You backstabber!" Alaric said as if his mind just clicked on the anger he felt when he had to find out in the newspaper that his trusted man got married in the middle of the night, under the rain, without anyone’s consent, not even his.
"What?" Cassian’s eyes widened slightly as if he knew what was coming, and Alaric’s gray- silver eyes conveyed the word ’run’.
Madeline, who had eagerly stepped out to come and see Cassian since she missed him, was left standing like a statue on the porch after blinking at the Royal carriage that was parked right outside her doorstep, glistening against the bright lanterns and under the mystic glow of the night.
"A royal carriage?"
The royal carriage was adorned with intricate gold ornaments and engraved patterns that embellished the exterior of the vehicle, leading her eyes to widen in pure marveling.
It was a fascinating sight to behold, as if plucked from a fairy-tale.
Madeline felt her heart race as she realized the enormity of the situation. A royal carriage was a symbol of importance and prestige, reserved for only the highest of nobility.
She could hardly believe she was alive to see one.
"But what is it doing here?"
Like an answer to her question, the door to the carriage suddenly opened, eliciting a gasp from her, but what she wasn’t expecting was for Cassian to stumble out with a young aristocratic figure trying to choke the life out of him.
"Did you not think of me or my feelings when you made that decision?!" She heard the young man say as he tried to hold Cassian in a choking slam, and the young lad was struggling to free himself from Alaric’s grip, making several attempts to unhook Alaric’s arm from his neck.
"Let go of me."
Madeline, whose mindset was quick to react, misinterpreted the situation as someone trying to kill her husband. Out of instinct, she dropped the lantern and looked around with immediate effect, looking for some weapon she could use to save her husband, and then she caught sight of a stick lying at a corner on the ground.
She ran to where the stick was and picked it from the ground. Looking at the unfamiliar man who was still refusing to let her husband go, without thinking, Madeline charged towards him with the stick in her grip.
"Get your hands off him!"
"Miss, Wait!!" The Coachman, whose face instantly blanched upon noticing the young woman, immediately tried to stop her with the sound of his voice, but she was too quick to act as she raised the stick and brought it down on Alaric who wasn’t expecting it.
"I said release him." She hit him for the second time, causing Alaric’s grip to loosen around Cassian’s neck as he fell to the ground, and Madeline gasped as she retreated, a painful groan escaping Alaric’s lips as he looked at the woman who dared to hit him with such strength.
"The hell..."
Madeline looked at Cassian who was still awestruck by her actions. By then, Alaric had already gotten to his feet, and Madeline pointed the stick at him when she feared he might attack her.
"Who...who are you? And why...why are you trying to kill my husband?" She asked, but before the stunned Alaric could respond, Cassian used the distraction to his own advantage, effortlessly succeeding in holding Alaric in a playful choking slam, and Madeline paused at the sudden turn of events, finding the situation to be unclear.
"Cas! How can you be so strong? Let go of me you brat!! It is a shame to my name if someone sees" Alaric playfully complained.
"What... what is going on?" Madeline blinked in puzzlement, not sure if she was supposed to keep hitting or just watch.
"I am your king, I order you to release me."
"How can a king be pleading for his own release? Where is that done?" Cassian whimsically inquired, not letting go, meanwhile Madeline had frozen upon hearing the word ’King.’
"K...K...King??" Her eyes snapped wide as her pupils dilated, and the stick in her hand dropped upon realizing she just hit the King of Carmarthen.
The carriage..... his mode of dressing, how could she be so blind to the obvious?? And she dared hit His Majesty with a stick??? What if he orders to get her hands cut off as punishment?
"Cas..." Madeline forgot about everything else and released Alaric from Cassian’s grip. "Cas, let go or we’ll get punished."
Saving Alaric from Cassian’s grip, the young man was finally able to breathe as he massaged his neck, and Cassian’s eyes shone with triumph when Alaric looked at him.
"I thought we were friends who’d kill for one another, but you want to kill me before my time." Complained Alaric, and Cassian only scoffed.
"You wanted to drop the formalities, I was being nice this whole time."
"Cas..." Madeline whispered his name, gaining his attention and gesturing for the young lad to seal his lips before he made things worse for them. She was already embarrassed as it is to have presented herself like some local warrior before His Majesty.
