Chapter 148: Her Awakening (2)
Madeline’s eyelids fluttered open to reveal a pair of glossy dark orbs, she was met with the familiar magenta color of her room ceiling, staring confoundedly at it as her mind was thrown into a dire state of disarray and confusion.
Pertinently, her irises expanded gradually before she gasped in terror. Out of impulse, she pushed herself up into a sitting position when her heartbeat began to palpitate against her chest, the memories of what had occured in the house of the Marquees filling her brain and generating a headache that made her wince softly.
"Maddie." Cas’s gentle voice made the young perplexed woman look in his direction to find him sitting on a chair beside the edge of the bed, and she released a shaky breath of air as her eyes raked over him, the tension in her heart ceasing recklessly.
She met his eyes that showed his relief upon seeing her awake, and since she was still feeling overwhelmed as her body hadn’t settled yet, Madeline couldn’t resist hugging the young lad who protectively embraced her smaller body, feeling desperate to confirm that this was no longer a dream, and that everything that happened was just a figment of her own imagination.
"Cas...Cas... Catherine?" She pulled back from his warmth to look at him, her apprehensive gaze frantically searching for answers as her voice came out hoarse. "What... What about Catherine?"
"She’s fine." He replied, his tone sounding unusually calm as let out a breath, "Orson’s taking care of her in the next room, you should focus more on yourself now, are you.... feeling alright?"
Madeline’s lips parted as she wanted to give a response, but nothing audible came out of it as she averted her gaze elsewhere. She was unsure of how she should feel or how she was supposed to feel. The complexities in her life were already getting tougher and now, there’s a strange light coming out of her??
"Here." Cassian handed her a glass of water he had kept by the side table, and Madeline looked at him with a sense of gratitude before receiving it and drinking it in one go.
He collected the glass cup when she had emptied it, and Madeline wiped off the remnants from her lips before taking a deep breath and using the little silence Cassian had given her to gain control over herself once again, trying her best to push her trauma aside.
"Did you..... did you see the light?" She asked a minute later in an inquiring whisper, subconsciously placing a hand to her chest where the light had mysteriously seeped out from, and to confirm it wasn’t her mind messing with her sapience, Cassian nodded his head in response.
He pushed his chair closer, holding the hands of Madeline as he could sense her distress, and he shook his head slightly, his eyes indicating she shouldn’t stress her mind over what happened at Orson’s place.
As confusing as it was for the both of them, the last thing Cassian wanted was for her to feel triggered by any more of those near-death scenes she witnessed today. Her health mattered way more than everything else, and his main priority was to keep her mind stable before considering the events of today.
"Maddie." He caressed her cheek lightly before giving her small head a pat he felt she needed, and his comforting gesture relieved her heart to a normal rate as she stole in a deep breath before lifting her worried gaze up to meet his stare.
"Did I... did I hurt..."
"You didn’t hurt anyone." He assured her, "I’m fine, Orson’s fine, and Catherine is in the process of recovering."
Madeline couldn’t express how relieved she was to hear this, but then a sudden guilt washed over her at the thought of Catherine and how she got stabbed. She knew deep in her heart that Catherine was in this state because of her.
"How...How is she? How is her health? She...she saved me today, but she got hurt in the process."
"Catherine is fine, Maddie." Cassian lost a bit of the impatience he had been trying to conceal, seeing his innocent wife feeling unnecessarily guilty over a woman whom he presently felt like killing himself.
"Why...why are you sounding like that?" Madeline, who didn’t fail to notice his rapid change of tone whenever she mentioned Catherine had to ask. "She’s hurt, she would have died because of me, and Orson would have lost his sister today because of me. How can I not feel guilty and worried when all this is my fault?"
"You’re only saying this because you aren’t aware of the things Catherine has done. Whatever happened to her was what she deserved and she used her own hands to dig the grave. Don’t blame yourself over something she brought upon herself."
Cassian’s response made Madeline blink wordlessly, and he sighed as his expression strained to keep his cool.
"What are you talking about?"
Ten minutes had gone by with Cassian explaining what Catherine had done, and Madeline rested her back against the headboard, staring unblinkingly at what was ahead of her while clutching against one of the pillows she had placed in front of her.
"Why....why did she do that to me?" Her unblinking gaze shifted to Cassian, feeling quite hurt and puzzled at the same time. "If she wanted to get rid of me, then why did she save me?"
"You saved her." Cassian corrected in a matter-of-fact tone, "I can’t explain what happened, but whatever that light was saved everyone." Cassian could still remember it, it was an image he couldn’t forget, and what he couldn’t pinpoint was how the light miraculously killed Elijah’s minions, disintegrating them and turning them into specks of dust that got blown away, but before he got a chance to react, the light vanished and that’s when she passed out.
"The light saved everyone?" Her eyes widened, the look of disbelief written all over it, and Cassian nodded with a proud smile as he patted her head encouragingly. "From what I’ve seen, calling you ’little wife’ would sound disrespectful since it appears there’s a mighty Maddie in you, and you just awakened it."
"I’m not mighty, and you’re saying rubbish." Scrambling out of bed after she had gathered the little energy her fragile body could muster, she walked closer to the standing mirror until her reflection stared back at her.
Pulling the neckline of her dress down a bit, Madeline noticed the tiny little pink scar that formed a cut on her skin. She could feel little throbbings coming from there whenever she touched it.
"This wasn’t here before." She looked at Cassian who rose from his chair, he approached her and took a quick look at the light scar before humming.
"Who were your parents again?"
