The Baroness Misbehaves
Chapter 147: Her Awakening (1)

Chapter 147: Her Awakening (1)

In the empty corridor, Catherine ran as fast as her legs could carry her as she tried to escape from the dark figure following her behind, unhurried and with both his twin blades held tightly in his grasp. Catherine’s breathing was ragged and labored, and with every step of her pounding heart, she could feel the cold trickle of sweat running down her back as she kept running without daring to look over her shoulders.

The heels of her shoes clicked against the floor, echoing through the empty space as she thought of outsmarting her tormentor and finding a place to hide. Her parents had left the house this morning with the butler, and Orson had left Thirty minutes after her parents were no longer at home.

Currently, she couldn’t call out to anyone for help since she was all by herself, but she had not anticipated what was happening to her right now.

Elijah stopped following her when the hide and seek game was starting to lose his interest bit by bit, and so he snapped his fingers, hearing it echo round the quiet corridor in a mysterious calling.

In a flash, two vampires wearing a red cloak consciously stood behind him, waiting for him to give the orders. Elijah stared down the path she had taken before turning around to take his leave.

"Bring her to me. Dead or alive." Came his orders before he took another route, vanishing from their sight after they bowed their heads in response before going after Catherine.

Catherine’s heels didn’t slow down as she continued to run with whatever little strength was still left in her. She could hear the uneven sounds of footsteps behind her, following her, drawing nearer and almost catching up to her. Her heart pounded heavily and her survival instincts made her increase speed.

"Leave me alone!" She screamed out as she looked over her shoulder to see two different cloaked strangers chasing her this time around. Alarmed, she tried to increase speed in an attempt to get away from their sight, but her breath was coming out in gasps and there was no place that looked safer for her to hide.

Then, in a moment of panic, she lost her balance and stumbled, hitting the floor with a light thud that sent a short painful cry tearing from her lips.

Her elbow grazed against the cold hard concrete, and she flinched in pain. "Ouch!! My arm!" Tears trickled down her eyes as she painfully clutched to her elbow, feeling it ache, but then she was snapped back to reality when the two cloaked vampires who had been chasing her non-stop finally stood before her, their ominous figure looming over her.

Panicked, she tried to get up to her two feet and make a run for it, but all her efforts proved unsuccessful as she had injured her elbow, and that made it weaker for her arm to assist her in rising up. She suddenly felt one of the vampires lean in, and the stench of his breath as he whispered to her sent shivers running down her spine.

"Little mortal, looks like your journey has come to an end." He said, his voice was deep and smooth, but there was a dangerous edge to it that sent chills running down her spine.

"S...stay away from me!"

Catherine tried to scramble back, her hands skidding on the dusty ground, but the vampire’s hands descended on hers in no time, holding her in place. She could feel his cold breath on her neck, and she knew she had no chance but to escape as she just cried and waited for the death she knew awaited her.

She braced herself for the worst, she couldn’t help but ponder on the consequences of her curiosity as she opened an eye to take a peek, and that’s when she noticed one of the vampires had his hands stretched out in the form of a claw, his sharp nails waiting to creating a hole in her body and pull one of her organs out.

"Ahhhh!!!!!!" She screamed and closed her eyes again, but before the vampire could commence his act of murder, Catherine suddenly felt his grip on her being released sharply, and the next thing she heard was someone was being slammed against the walls of the building, but she was too terrified to see what was happening as she folded herself and just kept screaming.

"Catherine!" She could hear a feminine familiar voice crouching down to her, but was too afraid to look.

"Catherine! Get a hold of yourself, we need to leave." The voice continued to persuade her, and when she finally dared to see who it was, the familiar worried face of Madeline came into sight as she loomed over her.

She instantly let out a harsh breath after seeing it was Madeline, "M... Madeline?"

"Can you stand up? We need to leave, right now." The urgency in Madeline’s voice made her turn her head to see what happened to the two vampires chasing her, and to her dumbfounded gaze, Cassian had lifted one of the vampire and slammed him hard to the ground while Orson was doing all he could to keep the other vampire busy from going after his sister.

"Let’s go!" Madeline’s voice made her look at her, still dazed and afraid.

"I injured myself, I can’t stand up properly." She said, pointing to the arm she had grazed on the ground, and Madeline carefully helped her stand up to her two feet.

"Put your arm around my shoulder." Madeline instructed, and Catherine listened as she quietly placed one arm around Madeline’s shoulder until she was standing. With Madeline’s help, Catherine could make her way down the stairs, looking back severally to make sure Cassian and her brother were alright.

"What about..."

"They’ll be fine." Madeline assured her as she continued to lead Catherine down the long stairs. When they had successfully made it to the end of the stairs, Madeline supported her as they headed for the main door, wanting to get Catherine to the carriage that waited outside for them, but then another dark figure stood in their way, a devious smile playing on his lips as both ladies gasped and took a safe step back.

"Leaving so soon?" Elijah asked, his head cocked to the side as he shifted gazes from Catherine and Madeline who cautiously took quiet steps back.

"You...." Even with half of his face covered thanks to the black cloak, Madeline could guess he had his eyes on her, and there was something familiar about him that she couldn’t put together, but one thing was for sure that he reeked danger.

"Have we met before?" He asked, but Madeline wasn’t interested in listening to what he had to say since she had a mental idea of how they use conversation to distract one from knowing their real intentions.

"We’re going to die." Catherine admitted, feeling her tears choking her throat as Elijah took a slow threatening step forward, his twin blade drawn out as he looked ready to spill blood.

"Your blood.... It smells refreshing." He inhaled deeply the sweet wine scent of her blood, a very unique scent he hardly found within humans, and his curiosity got piqued.

"I might know your story once I get a little taste." He grazed both his blades together, the sound of the ear-piercing screeching metal affecting both their ear drums as the two lady’s backed away, and they didn’t need anyone to tell them what was about to happen next.

"Run!!" Catherine pushed Madeline aside when Elijah lunged in her direction, telling her to make a run for it, but in return Elijah’s blade pierced through Catherine’s back, stabbing her and making her go stiff.

Madeline’s eyes widened horrifically at the sight. She watched as Elijah pulled out his blade from her, and a cold chill settled on Madeline as she watched Catherine drop to her knees, her blue watery eyes expressing how much she had expected it.

"C... Catherine!" Madeline wanted to go to her, but Elijah got in the way as he pointed his bloody blade at Madeline.

"My two minions will keep your husband busy, it’s just you and me." Elijah smirked, while Madeline took a step back, her eyes still fixed on Catherine who was bleeding on the ground.

"My God." She covered her palm with her mouth as tears dropped from her eyes.

"CATH!!!" She could hear Orson scream out his sister’s name from upstairs as his face turned ghostly pale.

"Get away from them!!" Cassian’s red eyes threatened Elijah, but unfortunately Elijah had two skilled Vampires whom he had to hold down by himself since Orson had gone into a state of shock.

"Your turn." Elijah whispered as he headed for Madeline.

The guilty voices in her head, the replay of Catherine being stabbed in front of her, Orson’s shock, everything felt overwhelming as the death of her parents replayed in her head, the crashing of their carriage, the bloody scene.

"No!!!" She screamed out as she clasped both hands to the side of her head, and to everyone’s bewilderment, a powerful white light flashed from Madeline’s chest, enveloping the whole house.
