The Baroness Misbehaves
Chapter 120: Her Health (1)

Chapter 120: Her Health (1)

Taking Madeline into the seat of the carriage, the red-haired vampire stood at the carriage’s entrance, staring at the unconscious woman with a subtle gaze before looking at the young lad and giving him a light pat on the shoulder.

"Your wife isn’t as fragile as you think, so you have nothing to worry about." He assured the young lad. "Any other person would have died in her current position, but she’s still alive and well, get her somewhere safe if you have to."

Cassian could still hear the sound of her heart beating against his sensitive eardrums, and the only fault was her weak pulse when he checked her wrist for any. The cold look in his eyes wavered as he continued to examine her, his coat had shielded her small body, leaving not a little skin exposed.

Inna joined her brother, and for the first time since he got here, she exchanged glances with the red-haired vampire who moved out of the way for her to pass. Clearing her throat to erase the awkwardness she felt, Inna got into the carriage beside Madeline. She sat beside her, resting Madeline’s head on her shoulder while Cassian sat opposite them.

"Where do you plan on taking her?" Worried, Inna asked her brother since she knew he had no place where he could take Madeline to. Cassian remained silent for a while, he looked at his fist that was still coated with little stains of blood before answering.

"Somewhere where she can be safe from the mansion." Came his subtle response and the carriage left.

~~~
Somewhere in the upper East quarters, in a peaceful calm estate....
It was already getting to twilight noon when Madeline’s eyes fluttered open, slowly emerging from her slumber.
She couldn’t help but feel a sense of disorientation wash over her, followed by an unexplainable ache that coursed through her weak body. She closed her eyes tightly to endure the unanticipated ache that left her body system shuddering lightly, and a soft hiss escaped her.
As she groggily turned her head from side to side, everything around her seemed different, as if she had been magically transported to some distant era she had only read about in books. Confused, she tried to sit up on the bed as she pushed her body up with all her strength, unable to understand why she felt so weak to the bones, but in the end, she managed to sit up and take in her unfamiliar surroundings.
The strange room was spacious and elegant, with high ceilings adorned with intricate moldings and a large chandelier hanging from the center. The walls were painted a soft cream, and the windows were draped in heavy, luscious curtains, pulled back to reveal a view of a sweeping garden beyond, shocking Madeline as she came to the quick realization that this wasn’t her room.
Her gaze swept past the thick soft carpet that covered the wooden floor. She stared at the fine furniture and arts in the room, wondering where she was and how she had gotten there.
Madeline gently swung her feet over the edge of the plush four-poster bed, which was laid with heavy embroidered linens and pillows of various colors. She looked down at herself, taking in the sight of her flowing nightgown in awe. She had never seen anything like it - the material was soft and light as a feather, with intricate lace and embroidery that seemed almost too delicate to touch.
Why is she wearing this? And who put it on her??
"What is this place?" Her voice was nothing more than a whisper, and she realized that her throat would ache each time she made an attempt to speak. Looking at the glass of water that was set beside the table after her bed, Madeline’s trembling fingers tried to reach for it, but then someone had already grabbed the glass of water before she could even touch it, making her withdraw her hands back.
"What are you doing? I’ll help you." A soothing voice reached her ears, and when Madeline looked up to see the source of the voice, it turned out to be Inna who had pulled a chair and joined Madeline, a look of relief washing over her face to see Madeline already awake.
"Inna?"
"Don’t stress, here, you wanted some water." With Inna’s help, Madeline was able to drink her glass of water before she set it down back on the table. Madeline’s gaze scrutinized the lovely room once more, and she looked at Inna who was smiling warmly in her direction.
"What...what is this place?" Madeline couldn’t help but ask, unsure of how she even got here or where she was before she came here. Her head was currently banging as if someone had picked up a hammer and used it on her head.
"You’re safe." She reassured her, holding her hand firmly in hers. "How are you feeling?"
"Everywhere aches." Madeline uttered in a whispering voice as she relaxed back on the bed. She couldn’t remember what happened, but the dread and fear that overwhelmed her body already told her she must have experienced something terrifying to feel this way.
"Did I do something?"
"No, you didn’t."
"Then why am I--"
Before she could complete her question, the door to the room she was in opened and Cassian walked in with the physician following behind. Seeing her awake, Cassian left the physician’s side and went to sit beside Madeline on the bed.
"You’re awake."
"Cassian?" Madeline paused when her throat hurt a bit. She pushed herself up into a sitting position, ignoring the pains that it sent across her body. Her mind couldn’t think of the pain after seeing Cassian sitting right beside her on the bed.
He assisted her, and when she finally sat up, she looked at him with tears brimming in her eyes, making them look glossier than they normally did. She couldn’t understand the feeling but seeing Cassian here made her feel more at ease, and she was staring at him as though it had been ages since she last saw him.
"Cas..."
"Shhhh, you’re okay." He assured her before looking at the physician who quickly examined her. Inna stepped out of the room to go make some medicinal soup that should ease the pain Madeline felt.
Finding her way to the spacious Kitchen, it took a while before Inna could gather the ingredients she needed to make the soup, and when she was in the middle of preparing it, a voice interrupted her.
"Isn’t it strange." The deep voice uttered, and when Inna turned to see who was speaking, her eyes widened slightly to see the same red-haired stranger standing at the entrance to the kitchen.
"It’s you again."
"Call me Elian." He told her his name before stepping into the kitchen. "When we tend to avoid a lot of people, they just keep coming back and now look, we’ll be seeing more of ourselves often."
"What does that mean?" Inna’s brow knitted dubiously at him, and he came to stand before her while she Instinctively backed away. His green eyes mysteriously bored into hers as though he could see into her soul and easily tell that she doesn’t trust him, and Inna couldn’t tell if she was supposed to take his presence as a threat.
"Who are you?"
"You’ll be surprised if I told you, but in the meantime, shouldn’t you be preparing what you wanted. Don’t let me be a distraction."
"And why am I not surprised that you’d say something like this?" Eyeing the stranger who claimed to be Elian, Inna turned away from him and began to make the medicinal soup.
Unbeknownst to her, Elian could smell her blood, and he inhaled deeply the sweet scent before shaking his head slightly in disapproval. Feeling quite annoyed that he was attracted to a human’s blood like this, he stepped out of the kitchen.
.....
After the physician was done looking into Madeline, Cassian escorted him out.
"How is she?"
"She’s out of danger." The physician assured him with a serious look on his aging face. "But her health needs to be critically adhered to. Judging from the traumatic state that she’s dealing with, this would have triggered more of her emotions and that could lead the content she inhaled to be severely dangerous to her health. Fortunately, she was able to keep herself alive, but now she needs to get tons of rest and avoid any more situations that could lead to her being triggered, at least till she gets better."
"But what do you think she inhaled?"
"I have options, I’ve given her some medicines that should stabilize her, but I can’t give her the actual treatment if I can’t get the exact content of what she must have inhaled."
