Chapter 214: Demonic aura
Chapter 214: Demonic aura
Inside a diner...
"One mushroom soup combo please."
"Right away, customer."
Viktor sat beside a table of some adventurers to hear the story of the rumoured demon lord and the summoned hero.
A long time ago, a saint was born into a poor family of a farmer. From a young age, she acted like she was always possessed by someone or something. She’d always talk about rain, flood and natural disasters. One day, an old man from the temple heard about her study and immediately took her in. In exchange, her family was granted wealth and noble status.
After 10 years, she started to act strange and babble about demons living in the land of Romos. That was the time when the humans of Romos discovered ancient ruins.
The king wanted to know more about it but because she was looking too deep into the future, she became sick. Soon, she died and left her last warning to mankind.
’Call the otherworldly heroes to stop humankind from destruction.’
But her last words were misunderstood by the nun who was aiding her before her death. She misunderstood the word destruction and thought of a demon lord. Soon, the misunderstanding grew deeper and it naturally created a story that never existed before.
When the demons will start to come up from the ground, it is a sign of the demon lord’s arrival and the king should call the heroes from the other world.
Viktor kept listening to their story and ordered a full set of drinks to enjoy the other half of the story.
The heroes who came from the other world were 17-18 years old youngsters. They were 7 in number and 4 of them were women. Every one of them is skilled in different jobs bestowed by a god called Kamu, a cat god that they worship. They had dark hair, dark eyes and all of them were equipped with magic boxes which were under the surveillance of the king himself because of his curiosity.
’So they were sent here with their phones... and a cat god. Are they talking about kiki? Just what is he planning? What will be the end of this trial? Should I become the hero? Or the demon lord to finish the quest? No, I need to reach the core of this tower. That’s my real job, I can’t get swept away by the stream.’
One of the heroes was appraised as the healer. For testing her ability, she used her skill on an armless man and in a second, his long-lost arm grew back.
This news spread all over the empire in just a week and soon, she became the star.
Not only that, another prodigy was found at the heroes’ party. A young man who has excellent swordsmanship beat all the royal knights even without any proper training.
Beside him, a young mage who has a talent for casting every elemental magic also grew popularity. The other member of the hero party was also found with excellent talents so the king bestowed noble status without any hesitation.
Now, they are all preparing to raid dungeons to gain experience and prepare for the war with the rumoured non-existent demon king.
Viktor finished his dinner and approached the travelling adventurer’s table. He said,
"Hey kid, that’s some nice story you got there. I’m from a remote village and I recently came here for business. That hero summoning of the king’s, is that real?"
"Oh, yes, yes. I saw one of the heroes with my own eyes a few days ago. She was with her knights to fight the demons next to the blue river. I saw her when I saw coming to this city. She was a beauty!! It was my first time seeing black hair with Black eyes."
"Oh, was she a mage or a swordsman?"
"She was a mage. A great mage after all. She blew an entire tree with one fire spell! The knights said she was only on level 5. I wonder how powerful she will become if she reaches level 10... anyways, you’re also new here. This makes us buddies, right? Come take a seat. Let’s talk about our journey."
Viktor took a seat with the group of adventurers and started to listen to their stories. They were all young adventurers who hunted monsters for only 2 years.
After talking about their life all night, Viktor paid for their meal and walked near the entrance to take his leave. Right at that moment, the young adventurer came and said, "Brother Viktor!! Are you already leaving?"
Viktor turned back and saw the green-haired boy running at him. He then said, "Do...do you want to join my party? We are planning to raid higher-class dungeons in the future."
"Aren’t you aiming for Syford Academy? You should pay attention to your studies for now. Studying is also important."
"Then...will you become my party member after I graduate from the academy?"
"Umm.. I don’t know, kid. Since I’m going to stay here for a bit long, I will think about it later. You will see me even if you’re inside the academy."
The young green-haired boy was surprised to hear his thoughts. So he again asked out of curiosity even though it’s inappropriate to ask about anyone’s main occupation.
"Are you going to be a worker of the academy? I heard the maids inside the academy are from noble or fallen noble families. Perhaps you’re from a noble family as well? Are you going to become a full-time worker there?"
"You’ll get to know it soon, kid." Viktor then again said, "Jones, isn’t it? I wish you good luck."
Jones smiled and replied, "I will make sure to become a great adventurer one day and again invite you to my party!! I’m expecting a positive answer from you!!"
"Hahah.. okay, okay.."
He patted the kid’s head and left the diner before sunrise. Since the day of his work was after two weeks, he went to the office of the academy to prepare all of his documents. It was the fastest way of his levelling up and observing the heroes, he accepted the job request.
It was a coincidence that he got the job.
’But, where should I live? Should I buy a house? But how am I supposed to buy a house with small money?’
He then remembered the platinum coin he earned from his last quest. But buying a house and taking care of it was a pain so he thought of a different plan and headed over to the city market to buy household items.
The sun had already risen at that time.
’The town is already lively. Adventurers are early-morning people. The guild is also open. Should I go and take a quest to earn some gold before buying a house?’
Everything was messing-up inside his head. He had to think about his new place to live in for a decade or two, work as a teacher in a magic academy, watch over the heroes and find more about the rumoured demon lord and level up to get connected with his real body to find out the core to the great tower.
His head started to become dizzy so he took a seat beside the road and closed his eyes to calm his mind. Since he wasn’t inside his real body, his fast-thinking mind wasn’t able to keep up with his thoughts.
’Ah...this headache... it’s killing me..."
"Excuse me, young man. Are you feeling unwell?" An old man said.
Viktor opened his eyes and raised his head to see the man’s face. His soft smile looked comfortable and his kind voice felt so warm in Viktor’s heart.
Viktor is a person with a cold heart and a tough mind that is nearly impossible to feel any warmth in anyone’s words and affection. So the reason why he was feeling good was very suspicious.
Viktor then said, "Who are you, old man?"
"I am just a priest who is just passing by. I heard you saying something about headaches. Perhaps you’re feeling unwell?"
"Ah, don’t worry. Thank you for your kind words."
He then thought, ’I am sure this aura is demonic. Even Adonis doesn’t use this on me to talk or to make me do something against my wish. And he dares to use his smelly aura on me. Even Adonis smells like rain on dry ground on a sunny day. He smells like garbage.’
Viktor then again said, "Old man, may I ask who you are? Why are you walking around in this early morning in front of a guild? Aren’t you supposed to be in a temple? Judging by your outfit, you must be a 2nd class priest."
"Hohohoho... you know about temples very well. Follow me, my child. I will give you a morning meal and show you our orphanage. You will change your mind and maybe decide to join us after that."
’Now what will my instinct say? Should I run or follow him to sniff out the core of the demonic aura? Demons can’t disobey me because I have a high demon as my servant. But to show the proof, I need to level up more. I need to avoid him until then...’
He stood up hurriedly and said, "Oh my. I feel so great suddenly!! Sir, I will come to the orphanage after I am free. I am a very person, you see. Please take care of yourself until then. I promise on my name that I will come and also give some donations to the orphanage. Goodbye!!"
He then ran inside the guild without saying goodbye to the priest properly.
