Chapter 163: A test of loyalty 2
Someone volunteer to take his place, and I will heal him."
He looked at Aegis’s guards, "What?"
"What do you mean? Take his place?" Kaid yelled.
They began to murmur among themselves.
He raised his right hand, "Be quiet."
There was silence.
"Okay, let me rephrase it. Is anyone going to take his place?"
They exchanged glances, gawking in disbelief. Of course, none of them wanted to take his place.
"No one? None of you? Then watch him die," he laughed loudly, "This is going better than I thought!"
"I wonder why I did not come here earlier," he chuckled, and faced Aegis.
"None of them loves you at all, so sorry for you."
Aegis eye’s met with Faunana’s, but Faunana quickly looked away. He wasn’t ready for any sacrifice of a sort.
’They actually hate me?’ He blinked several times.
"Okay then Aegis. You will bear your suffering alone. Your ’guards’ would face another," he shrugged his shoulders, and sighed, feeling bored already.
"I would have you all thrown in the duegon, but it is.. well damaged. I do not think any of you bothered to fix it," he sucked his teeth, "So.. you all will have a good night’s rest in the Crimsons den," he announced.
No! Not the Crimson Den!
"Crimson Den! No.. no.. I am so scared of that place," Thane cried out.
"That does not matter. It would not make sense if I actually considered your fears, would it?" He creased his brows, "now, do not bother me."
He headed towards the door, and walked out of the throne too.
"He is going to kill us!" Thane cried.
"Oh, what did you think? That he would spare you?" Faunana cut in feeling irritated.
"Oh, are you on his side Faunana? You are actually betraying Aegis!" Kaid spat at him.
"As if he had always cared about us. What is the use of caring about him. If it be our fate to die, let us die," Faunana sighed.
Aegis watched Faunana speak with a twitching heart. He never knew even members of his pack would disklike him too.
He turned his face away, and let the tears that clung to his eyes fall. He didn’t care this time, the pain was too much for him to hear this time.
"We can not die just like that! We did not kill any member of his pack!" Farkas retorted.
"Hmm," Faunana sneered.
"We have lost too many of our wolves in the battle with Oberon, what more does he want? To wipe us out?" Thane asked no one in particular.
"Would it not be great if he did so?" Faunana shrugged.
Everyone threw him a very infuriated look, "Stop trying to support Oberon! You are a member of our pack! You have always been with us! You are rogue just like the rest of us, do not forget that!" Boris bellowed.
Faunana took in a deep breath, "Oh, I wish I was never a rogue. I was only being foolish then? Tch, youthful madness," he sighed sadly.
It turned into a heated argument. More than half of the wolves present were against Faunana, criticizing him for going against Aegis.
Faunana still stood his ground, and did not change his view on the issue.
"You are one of the worst wolves I know," Kaid cringed, "I curse the day I ever knew you."
Faunana tightened his lips, "You will realize soon. Unfortunately, it might be in a painful way."
"Just keep it to yourself! Ingrate!" Boris eyed him in disgust.
"You all should stop acting as if you love Aegis. If you really did, you would have taken his place when Oberon asked you to," Velkan Spoke up.
Silence suddenly drowned the room, that even if a hair pin had fallen to the ground that moment, it would have been heard.
Velkan continued, "He is there writhing in pain. Oberon did ask you if you wanted to take his place, none of you did."
"So why not let the one who does not pretend like the rest of you be?"
They all hung their heads in shame, thinking about what Velkan said.
"So, you should keep your criticisms to yourself. It is not really needed," he shook his head, and looked away.
For the next few minutes, nobody said anything. Each of them were busy with contemplating within themselves.
Aegis coughed, catching the attention of everyone.
"It.. is okay if I die alone, I would really need no one to take my," he coughed again, "my place."
"Faunana was .. right.. I did not.. care about any of you. It is.." he heaved heavily, "right.. that I receive this.. as a punishment."
He sniffed, "You all.. were the wonderful ones along," he coughed painfully for a while, "oh," he sniffed.
"I am a bad wolf, I am a bad ruler too. So.. I.. do not deserve any sympathy."
"I do plead for forgiveness. Even if you do.. not want to do.. anything else for me.. forgive me."
They all exchanged glances.
"Faunana," he called softly, "I especially ask for your forgiveness. I must.. have hurt you a lot..." He coughed again, and groaned.
"I did not mean to offend you.. find a place in your heart to forgive me."
Faunana sneered, "I doubt so. You did mean every single action."
"Maybe you are right, and I am so sorry... For that... Forgive me please."
Oberon walked in that moment, this time with other wolves.
"So.. you are to take them all to the Crimson Den, except Aegis of course."
"Yes, your highness," they bowed slightly, and moved towards them.
"Wait.. do not .. touch them yet,"Aegis coughed.
Oberon turned to look at him, "What? Why?"
"I.. have something to.. say."
"Oh, your last words I presume," he rasped.
"Well, maybe they are."
"Speak up, do not waste anyone time," he growled.
"I want to ask for forgiveness Oberon. I have been a very.. a very.. horrible uncle to you. I should have protected you.. not fight you."
Oberon arched his brows in surprise, What had gotten over him?
