Chapter 98: She would end things with Noah...
Xavier POV
I stared at my phone again as I paced back and forth across Kurtis’s room. I couldn’t shake off the knot of anxiety in my gut over the whole thing that had happened. A thousand and one scenarios were running through my mind as I tried not to imagine Selene’s predicament.
From the audio recording we had listened to, she seemed to have suffered a lot. I was angry and guilty at the same time. It was part of my fault that Selene was sent on that dangerous mission but it was fruitful at the end. We can now confirm that the person posing as King Tanner was his brother Conrad.
But we weren’t able to decipher his intentions from the audio recordings. Instead, it felt like he was immensely loyal to his brother and was reporting to him. The entire situation was dicey but what we hoped for was he didn’t catch up to our plans and Selene had acted so well to quell rising suspicions whatever it may be.
"For the love of the moon, Xavier... would you settle down?" Kurtis sighed from where he was hunched over his desk, his brows furrowed in concentration as he played the audios and videos from the mission "Your incessant pacing is grating on my nerve and irritating me. I need my wits about me, especially at this time,".
I shot him an apologetic look but couldn’t force myself to remain still.
"I’m sorry," I sighed "It’s just that I have a lot of worries. I don’t think I’ve ever been this worried. It feels like that time Selene was aboard that plane that crashed and I had to wait until midnight to get feedback from the rescue team. It was the most excruciating experience I’ve ever had, so cut me some slack,".
"But she’s fine now," Kurtis sighed dropping what he was doing to look at me "You heard it yourself when Noah paged us to inform us that she was fine. So, stop worrying already and you should find a way to appease your Beta, he didn’t look pleased,".
"Lucius will be fine," I waved the thought aside "I am more concerned about Selene. Noah didn’t go into detail about everything that happened. Was she injured or something? Is she showing signs of trauma and the like?"
"She’ll be fine, don’t worry," he patted my back "And I must applaud you for your brilliant plan. Cutting the power to the hotel to provide cover for Lucius to slip out and also for Selene to be extracted. I’m glad she got away finally and I know if she’ll be angry with anyone then it’ll be me because she trusted me so much. Do you think she’ll catch on to the purpose of this mission?"
"I don’t think, Noah will tell her but she’s smart and she may be able to put two and two together,".
My heart flitted to the desperation I had seen on Noah’s face as he waited for Lucius to get into position. I’ve never seen him so anxious. Without hesitation, he had volunteered to stake out in front of the hotel and grab Selene. Risking being seen or caught by the security camera. What was more disturbing was the fact that he refused to take my calls or reach out again after informing us he was with Selene.
"Listen, I know you’re worried about her. Why don’t you just go and check on her yourself before you wear my floor thin also, we need to make some analysis later on. So, put your mind at ease and go see her,".
"You think I should?" I asked waiting for a double reassurance.
"Don’t act like you don’t want to and how long are you going to keep pinning over your uncle’s wife? She belongs to another man and...".
"I’ll go out for some air and maybe go and check up on her," I interrupted him "And I also expect a detailed report on everything, my uncle would ask for it when he comes about,".
"As if," Kurtis smirked and made a shooing motion with his hand. "Fine, now off you go, I’m tired of absorbing your wretchedness,".
Throwing him a glare, I strode out of his room and in a few minutes, I was standing in front of Selene’s room. I took a deep breath before knocking. There was no response after a few seconds. I knocked again but still no response.
Reaching for the knob of the door, I turned it, realizing it was open. Taking in another ragged breath, I pushed open the door reached for the light switch on the wall, turned it on and waited until my eyes adjusted to the light. That was when I noticed the room was empty. Aside from her minty scent will filled the room, there was no indication that she had been there.
I turned off the lights and stepped out again wondering where she was. Noah had told me they were taking a break to resolve issues, so there was no way she would be with him. While I was wondering where she was, a maid passed by.
"Hey there!" I beckoned on her "Do you know where the queen is? Is she back?" I inquired.
"Yes, Alpha," she lowered her gaze "She came in some hours ago with his majesty. She may likely be with him,".
"Oh!" I nodded as the information brought a small sense of relief to me "Thank you. You may leave,".
Tracing my way through the corridors, I arrived at Noah’s room a short while later and knocked firmly preparing to use the results of the mission as an excuse but there was no response. I rapped again, trying to be as quiet as possible in case Selene was with him and was sleeping but only silence greeted me. Worry sprang up in my heart and once more, I slowly pushed the door open and peeked inside.
"Your Maj...".
The words dried on my lips at the scene that greeted me. On the king-size bed in the middle of the room was Noah and Selene nestled in each other’s arms intimately. Noah was naked, cradling an equally naked Selene on his thighs with their lips locked together and eyes closed in ecstasy as they moved in a rhythmic allure. It was clear that they were no longer in this world.
Did Selene deceive me when she agreed that she would end things with Noah? Didn’t Noah tell me that they were taking a break? Were they supposed to still be sleeping with each other at this point?
I froze where I stood... nothing could have prepared me for this. Pivoting on my heel, I pulled the door softly closed behind me trying to fight the pain that lodged in my chest and Colton’s whimpering.
"She doesn’t belong to us... at least not anymore, Colton," I murmured as I marched stiffly down the corridor and back to Kurtis’s room.
His eyes widened with surprise when he saw me.
"Back so early?"
I needed to focus my mind on something else. What was more important now is to make sure, Noah severs his relationship with the West and that amicably. The goal was to get him to depend on us and in turn, we would use his resources too. My pack should come first before my feelings... He was my uncle and he was married to my former mate whom I rejected. It wasn’t a big deal.
Ignoring, Kurtis’s inquisitive look, I settled on the empty seat next to him.
"What’s the progress?"
