Chapter 96: A walking confusion...

Selene POV

"You disrespectful, old hag!"

My heart pounded violently as Conrad – King Tanner’s so-called brother slammed me against the wall, his burly forearm pressing into my throat. I clawed desperately at his iron grip, gasping for air.

"Didn’t you learn manners? Weren’t you told that you don’t speak to men that way? Just because you’re married to a Lycan King doesn’t give you the right to speak to me in anyways you wretched, Werewolf,".

I managed to wedge my hand between his and my throat, creating a little allowance for my airway. Facing him, I gave him an amused glance "One would mistake you for an Omega because that’s the attitude you’re giving me right now," I retorted.

He tightened his grip and pressed harder into me. "You’ll tell me everything," he snarled, spittle flying from his twisted mouth "Why did you want to see King Tanner? What are you going to tell him? Who sent you? Tell me this instant before I lose what is left of my temper on you,".

I wheezed out distorted protest as my vision started to blacken from being deprived of air. Whatever this mission was that I was sent, there was more to it. I was supposed to meet King Tanner... why was his brother here instead? Kurtis had sounded so sure that it was him I would meet, so why was he absent? Was this a deliberate attempt for them to confirm his absence or what?

His eyes had a murderous intent in them, and with the way he was pressing his weight on me, it’d be a miracle if I survived. Was this how it would end? Crushed at the hands of this man? Suddenly, I remembered the lipstick in my bag. Dazedly, I allowed my hand to swiped widely in the air, before finally locating the bag. I slipped my hand inside of it, and almost immediately, I made out the form of the lipstick.

On cue, a sharp rap at the door frightened me immediately and made me drop the lipstick. Conrad too had been surprised by the sudden intrusion and his grip left my throat for a brief second. Whipping his head towards the door, he growled

"What is it?!"

"R-room service," a timid voice called out. "Sorry to disturb you, but someone requested food in this suite and I am just bringing it,".

Conrad rolled his eyes "Just leave it there, I’ll have someone bring it in inside,".

"I’m sorry sir but there’s something else that needs to be confirmed before I go, so I must see someone. I’m sorry for the inconvenience," the voice continued.

This time, Conrad’s arms dropped from my neck as he turned towards the door with suspicion and then turned to his men, glaring at them.

"Which one of you ordered food?" he asked.

Silence reigned in the room for a bit and I almost thought no one was going to answer until a small voice spoke from behind.

"It’s me your majesty. I was hungry and asked for a meal,".

"The effrontery," Conrad murmured under his breath "It seems being far from home has made you a bit lax that you think you can do anything. We’ll talk about how to punish you later,".

Seeing that he was engrossed with his men, and with the last ounce of strength I had, I wrenched myself completely from his grip and tried to make a break for the door but I didn’t go up to two steps when he recovered quickly and reached out for me, gripping my hand like an ironclad.

"I am not done with you, yet!" He declared and this time, grabbed a fistful of my head as he started dragging me towards the centre of the room.

He had barely started dragging me when the door of the suite opened and the room service attendant barged in, carrying a tray that contained a bowl of steaming food with divine aroma. He bent almost to his knees. When he straightened his eyes scanned the room under the hood of his cap. Instantly, I recognized those dark calculating eyes and the mop of floppy dark hair peeking out from under the red cap.

The room service outfit was shorter than him giving him an awkward look. Our eyes meet for a brief second and in that moment, I knew what I must do,".

"Who asked you to come in?" Conrad screamed.

"I’m sorry sir," Lucius bowed his head, as he apologized repeatedly, "I could have sworn I heard come in,".

"Then get the fuck out of this place," Conrad roared and let go of my hand as he rushed to Lucius. As he made to push him out of the room, the bowl that contained the steaming hot soup careened to the corner of the tray and before we could stop it, sloshed on Conrad.

The liquid must have been scalding hot because Conrad cried out in surprise and pain as the front of his shirt started to spread with the soup. His men started to run around, trying to look for a solution and somehow, Lucius got the soup on all six of them.

This was a perfect opportunity for me. While the men were groaning in pain and Lucius acting like a walking confusion and an apology machine that broke down since he kept saying ’sorry’ every second, I weaved my way through the chaos and bolted for the door.

My heart felt like it would burst from my chest, but I didn’t dare stop, not even when I reached the corridor outside. As I approached the elevator, I remembered that man from earlier and I was scared of going into it for fear he would join me again and try to harm me. But while I was contemplating, a tall, lanky muscled man, came out from the pillar he had wedged himself into. Immediately, he pointed to the open elevator.

I didn’t need to be told twice I slipped in immediately as tears of terror and relief coursed down my face. As soon as the elevator binged, I exited immediately and in quick strides, I was outside the hotel.

As I was there, hoping the driver I would come with would appear suddenly, the lights went off, plunging us into total darkness. Someone tugged at me and I landed on a familiar chest.
