Chapter 95: For Selene’s sake...

Kurtis POV

I followed silently and watched as Selene slipped into the car and it sped off leaving a trail of dust in its wake. My heart was pounding furiously ... I had a bad feeling about the whole thing. It wasn’t as if I was worried that something would happen to Selene because somehow, I had the feeling that she could take care of herself.

I was just worried that the mission might fail. I tried to think of everything that has happened so far with the so-called impostor of King Tanner and sincerely, it seemed everything was too plain. Aside from the ships coming in from the northern seas, I was surprised he came into Moon Whisper via the airport and in such a loud and extravagant manner.

What plans was he hatching? Who was he to begin with?

One of my men suddenly ran to me with my ringing phone. When I checked the caller ID it was Xavier.

"Hello," I answered immediately "I was about to call. She just left," I said.

"She agreed to it?" Xavier asked with surprise in his voice "How did you get her to do it?"

"Too many questions, Alpha," I chuckled "I’m heading towards you and Noah and I’ll give you a detailed briefing. Let’s meet outside the pack house. You’ll see a white van there," I explained further.

"Alright," Xavier agreed "We’ll meet you shortly,".

Shortly, I arrived in front of the Packhouse in the white van, while I waited for Noah and Xavier to arrive, I was double-checking all the connections of the devices I had sent with Selene. From the laptop I had in front of me. Immediately, the door of the van opened and Xavier and Noah came into view.

Without saying a word, they climbed into the back of the van and joined me. I waited for a while, watching the monitor and the laptop simultaneously before lifting my gaze to face them. Noah had a worried frown on his brow. I could tell he was nervous with the way he kept tapping his left foot. Xavier on the other hand seemed calm.

"So," I started "I was able to explain everything to her, the pros and cons and she accepted,".

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Noah burst out with a heavy sigh "I have a bad feeling about this whole thing. What if I go to the hotel right now and ask to see the emissaries? Wouldn’t that save time and keep Selene safe?"

"I thought we’ve been over this, your majesty," I fought the urge to roll my eyes "Selene knows the risks she’s taking. I made sure to explain everything to her and aside from that, I gave her a lot of useful devices..." I paused and swept my hands to the monitors on the table in front of us "Each of these monitors represents each of the devices I gave her and just to put you at ease, they were crafted to camouflage a lot of items, so no one would suspect her,".

"So," I continued "They have coded communication channels we’d used to stay in touch. Only that she won’t be able to speak to me because I’m trying to make sure, she doesn’t give any hint that she’s not working alone. But we can hear everything she says or do including other parties that would be involved at one time or the other,".

When I finished, I noticed Noah’s jaw was tightly clenched with worry.

"You did well in preparing her, Kurtis. But the only way I’ll feel reassured and better is when she’s back safe with us," he stated, his voice heavy.

"About that..." I pulled out a copy of the Apex Hotel building plan and spread it on the table in front of us "I have mapped out multiple escape routes from the hotel and I also gave her instructions on how to access any of these escape routes. My man I sent an hour ago to set up all of these things inside already finished and they’re all online," I pointed again to one of the monitors showing several screens and passages of the hotel.

Picking up a blunt pencil, I turned to the map "Here, here and here are the best escape routes... it’s quicker and closer for her. If anything goes wrong... no matter how agitated or nervous she is, she would run in either of these three directions. My men are also on standby at each of these points and also at the lobby, entrance, backside and almost everywhere at the hotel. They would grab Selene and get her to safety,".

Xavier leaned over the map, as he assessed it for a few minutes. "They’re solid plans," he nodded "But what if there is an emergency or things do not work out the way we’ve planned. Let’s say, they go to another room or another floor,".

"I understand," I chuckled "My men have been trained to come up with the best and most feasible solution in ten seconds. We’re currently trying to shorten the time but if there’s any need for that, all I need to do is inform them and they’ll go in full force. Don’t worry guys, everything will be fine. The operation would be smooth, I know that" I lied.

With the details of the operation fully covered, we drove off and arrived at the hotel vicinity. We parked a few blocks away from it while I waited for one of my men inside to let me into the hotel’s systems. In less than ten seconds I was in.

The devices I gave to Selene immediately activated. We heard Selene’s voice instructing the driver to idle around and that she would only be a minute. After that, we listened as she entered the hotel, greeted the receptionist and made small conversations. We also saw her through the CCTV present in the hotel before she headed to the elevator.

A man dressed inconspicuously entered after her. As soon as I saw him, my heart lurched with fear but since the other men didn’t react, I decided to stay calm. As she arrived at the floor, we lost a visual of her since Apex Hotel does not have CCTV on the corridors of their suites. So, we had to rely on all the audio devices I had with me.

After a while, the audio feed picked up Selene stating firmly to someone "I’m supposed to go there,".

It was followed by a scattered apology and then shuffling of feet. I tensed as I strained my ears trying to determine who was there with her and also trying to picture what was happening at that moment. Suddenly, the sounds of a muffled struggle and Selene’s surprised gasps filled the van.

Simultaneously, three of us lurched to our feet. My heart plunged into my gut as I exchanged a grim look with Noah and Xavier. Noah had an ’I told you so’ look on his face.

"We don’t know anything yet guys," I told them trying to sound sure "The audio fee is still life, which means she hasn’t been found out about this. Let’s give it a few minutes and see what happens.

What we expected to be a few minutes dragged on to an hour. Noah started pacing.

"This is so stupid," he scoffed shaking his head "I can’t imagine that someone of my status is huddled in this van playing police when I can just walk up to that hotel and demand to see these people. goddess! what was I thinking listening to you?"

"Uncle, please calm down," Xavier pleaded.

"Calm down!" Noah gave a dry laugh "My wife is there, and there’s been no word for nearly an hour and you want me to calm down? I swear by the...".

Immediately, a gruff voice cut through the din. I held up my hand to stop Noah from talking as we listened. The voice seemed like that of a man and there was silence for a while until suddenly, we were forced to listen to loud laughing and joking. It seemed the man entered a noisy room.

Minutes ticked by and we were listening to men talk about a lot of random things mostly women. Then suddenly, the room fell silent as a voice questioned.

"What’s going on here?

There was silence before we heard a man’s trembling voice "Your majesty... we discovered that she was sent from the pack house and...".

"What did you say?" The voice yelled in incredulity.

It was followed by feet shuffling and then silence before his voice came on stronger than before. It was filled with anger.

"Who did this?" he barked, his face turning red with anger "How dare you capture her? Do you have any idea who is that you have with a rope around her hands and her mouth covered? Untie her this instant!"

"This is Luna Selene... Lycan Noah’s wife and Queen. How can you apprehend our guest and treat her worse than a slave? What’s wrong with all of you? Gosh!"

The man’s voice boomed again.

Noah gripped the edge of the table so tightly; that I thought it might crack under his grasp. At least Selene was still alive.

A short while later, Selene’s voice came on strong: "You don’t expect they would do this to me? Who gave them order then? Anyways, I don’t have time to banter and argue with something as clear as this. So, I’m going to leave,".

There was silence before Selene’s voice came on harshly. It was also filled with irritation.

"Can you stop touching me," she queried "I want to leave, so please stop blocking my path,".

"Did your husband send you... King Noah?" the voice asked.

"No," Selene said without missing a beat, "I came here on my accord to see King Tanner but he doesn’t seem to be around. So, I’ll simply leave,".

"King Tanner?" the man repeated with a subtle scoff "I am Conrad his brother and I am representing him; you can tell me whatever you want to tell him and I’ll make sure to pass it along,".

"I don’t speak to representatives... I want to speak to the King immediately. If you cannot get to him then stay the fuck away from me!"

We heard Selene say. What followed next looked like they were struggling and with each moment, the tension in the van was growing.

"That’s it!" Noah hissed "We need to get her out now before something happens,".

"Yes," Xavier agreed, "At least we know the name of this impostor. Conrad, he called himself,".

"If I ask my men to go up there, they might blow her cover and make things worse. We need someone who can go in without arousing suspicion and who doesn’t look like what he’s capable of,".

"Lucius!" Xavier called out immediately "Lucius can easily break in and get her out. He’s good at things like this,".

"Call him," Noah ordered without hesitation "Get him prepped and in position. And Kurtis..." he turned to me with a glare "If that bastard has harmed even a hair on Selene’s head, all plans are off. We hit that place with full force and have each of them arrested,".

Staring back at the hardened resolve in Noah’s eyes, I gave a solemn nod, acknowledging his decision. For Selene’s sake, I prayed it wouldn’t come to that. But one way or another, we would get her safely out of there and... I noticed that the nervousness I felt before had completely dissipated.

It was a sign... things were going to go well, at least for a while...
