Chapter 88: Just the two of us!

Selene POV

"Are you joking right now, Reid?" I bristled still staring at him in surprise.

"It’s because of your Ex, right... Xavier..." he scoffed "So, in one moronic move, you’d forsake the life you’ve built for yourself here and go back to the man that made your life a living hell! Have you lost your senses entirely?"

Running a hand over his hair, he shook his head in disbelief. "If you walk away from Noah because of a moment of pleasure and a little emotional sway from your ex-husband... I can guarantee you that you’d never rise above the miserable housewife you were meant to be and..."

"That’s enough, Reid," I said coldly "I thought you’d be beside yourself with happiness. At least you’d finally have him all to yourself or have you forgotten. How much you hated that he married me?"

"Selene... you don’t...".

"I didn’t ask you for your counsel, Beta," I cut him off icily. The temperature in the room seemed to go down several degrees as I fixed him a steady glare. "I don’t need Xavier or Noah to tell me how to lead my life... I do it as my conscience dictates. With everything that’s happening in the pack and your unseriousness to get things done and fix the potential harm that’s been lurking around me and my children for a while now because of your emotions then I shouldn’t be here. A pack that cannot protect its Queen, do not deserve one,".

I watched as he opened his mouth, probably to retaliate with an angry retort but I silenced him with a raised hand.

"By the way," I stated with a note of finality in my voice leaving no room for argument "I and Noah will not be taking that divorce immediately. He insisted we separate for a while and think things over but we all know things like this do not always work and me coming back with Noah will depend on a lot of factors,".

I heard him sigh with annoyance as he murmured "Like what?"

"For a start, I need to be reassured that my children will be welcomed anywhere they go without people whispering behind their backs. I don’t care if they would stop when they see them or not, I just want that there’ll be no room for gossiping. I don’t care about my image but my children’s should be spotless, to say the least,".

Reid gaped at me for a long, tense moment, staring blanking at me as if I were a wall. For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t cooperate with my intentions but somehow, his eyes flicked with a steely resolve and then finally, he clamped his jaw shut and simply gave me a curt nod agreeing to what I had just said.

"Any other thing?" he asked.

"Let’s work with making me a perfect Luna in the eyes of the people first. If there are more requests, I’ll inform you subsequently," I said.

Without another word, he turned away from me and stormed out of the room. As soon as he was gone, I collapsed on one of the chairs in the room, my body trembling with fear. I didn’t think he would agree and even so, would he truly, do it? I wondered.

Picking myself up, I slipped out of the room a satisfied smile on my face. If there was what I didn’t know before, I knew for a fact that everyone agreed that Noah loves me and taking me away from him would be disastrous... after all, a pack without a King is as good as gone.

I had barely rounded the corner to the children’s room when I picked up voices at the passage. Hiding behind a pillar, I crept closer and froze when I saw Lucius and Brooke talking in the passage. There was a sense of familiarity between them as they conversed. Occasionally, Brooke would lightly hit his shoulders and Lucius who barely smiled was responding with a laugh.

It felt so strange to see him that way. Since I didn’t want them to see me, I backtracked deciding to go for a stroll first before coming back but the mention of my name caught my attention.

I returned to my former position straining my ears to pick up what they wanted to say about me but it was difficult. I was too far from them and there was no way I would go closer without being noticed. Sighing I turned back to move away when a shadow fell on me. Coiling with fear, I stumbled and almost fell to the ground when Kurtis’ strong hands held me up.

"Your majesty," he murmured and bowed "Good evening, longest time," he said.

"And to you too, Kurtis," I said flippantly and made to walk past him when he grabbed my hand and jerked me towards him "Are you leaving already? I just got here and I was hoping you’d be kind enough to give me your attention for only ten minutes and no more. There’s something I wish to discuss with you,".

"Not right now, Kurtis," I shook my hands from his grip "As you can see, I am in the middle of something if you don’t mind. I was about to go see my children,".

"I could tell you what they’re talking about," he said quietly "In exchange for an audience with you,".

I studied him looking for signs that he was bluffing and wondering why I should trust and take his word for it but I also wanted to know what they were talking about. Sighing I nodded. Gingerly, he removed a tiny black roundish thing and placed it at the edge of the wall close to Brooke and Lucius and then he handed me a wireless earbud. Plugging it into my ears, I tried to remain calm as Brooke’s laughter filtered in.

"I swear I almost didn’t recognize you. It’s such a pleasure again to see you and I should say I would visit or something but with your busy schedule, it’ll not be fair to just come up to you suddenly,".

"I understand but don’t worry, we’ll get everything sorted out. I have to leave now," he said "I was looking for Alpha Xavier by the way. Tell your dad that I’ll come by to the house as soon as I am free,".

"I sure will," Brooke said and then there was silence for a while almost when I wanted to hand the earbud back to Kurtis, Brooke’s voice came on strong. "Lucius... is Xavier trying to reconcile with Selene? I heard they were married for seven years and have children...".

"Where did you hear that from?" Lucius asked her, I could sense bewilderment in his voice as he shuffled his feet "We came for the quarterly meeting with the King. What are you talking about?"

"Well..." Brooke gave a short laugh "Then it’s nothing. Don’t worry, it’s all foolish speculations and you should be on your way now," she urged him.

I didn’t wait to hear the rest of what they were saying. So, I handed the buds back to Kurtis and walked away. Kurtis was hot on my trail but we didn’t say anything until we reached the other end and then I turned to him in exasperation.

"What do you want?" I asked glaring at him.

"First, I’d like to apologize for the means I used in summoning you and that’s because I didn’t have a choice. I was trying to meet you a while ago but was informed by the maids that I need to seek your permission first before I come to see you. Anyways, I was strolling past when I picked up your scent,".

"Fine, just get to it, Kurtis, we don’t have all day... I don’t have all day, rather," I rephrased watching him curiously.

"Well, as you know your mate Noah rejected a marriage proposition between him and King Tanner’s daughter and for that, there’ll be grave consequences. Aside from openly disrespecting the king, he also lost his daughter and the King is bent on taking revenge as we speak, they are currently taking two courses to come down to Moon whisper,".

He paused and took a breather before he continued "On one of the courses is his emissaries and they aim to successfully take the princess away and then a few hours later, with their almost invisible army coming from the northern borders and they would attack. Now the problem is they will win if you do nothing about it...".

"They will win?" my eyes widened with shock "What do you mean? And how am I supposed to stop anything. I just a wolf and...".

"You’re not just a wolf, Selene," Kurtis said quietly watching me "You are an elemental wolf... you have the ability to control the elements, every single one to them and make them work in your favor but you and the girls. We’ll need all hands-on deck,".

My brows arched in amusement. The last time we had an elemental wolf was years ago and being an elemental wolf was no fun especially as you have to be particularly skilled to be able to control all of the powers of the world.

The old moon priestess that had taken me in when she was still alive was the first person to tell me about transitioning into an elemental wolf. While the girls were born during the blood moon and had clairvoyance and their wolves on time, I had the ability to connect with everything around me.

For the months I had been pregnant with the girls, she had guided me to learn mastery over them and I had tucked them in the deep part of my heart hoping that one day they will come in handy but what I didn’t understand was how Kurtis knew about it.

I didn’t want to lie either, so I just sighed and faced him "How did you know?" I asked.

"Silver..." he pointed to the whitish substance scattered all over the place "Only elemental wolfs can pass that without burning and I had my suspicions before... I only got to confirm it," Kurtis said.

"How many people know this?" I sighed.

"Just the two of us!"
